अदृश्यः सर्वभूतानां कूटयोधी निशाचरः। बबन्ध शरबन्धेन भ्रातरौ रामलक्ष्मणौ
Invisible to all beings, the deceitful night-wanderer bound the brothers Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa with a snare of arrows.
तौ तेन पुरुषव्याघ्रौ क्रुद्धेनाशीविषैः शरैः। सहसाभिहतौ वीरौ तदा प्रेक्षन्त वानराः
Struck suddenly by that angry one with serpent-like arrows, those two tiger-men, the valiant brothers, were watched by the monkeys.
प्रकाशरूपस्तु यदा न शक्त- स्तौ बाधितुं राक्षसराजपुत्रः। मायां प्रयोक्तुं समुपाजगाम बबन्ध तौ राजसुतौ दुरात्मा
When, in visible form, the rākṣasa prince could not harm the two, he resorted to illusion and bound the royal brothers, wickedly.
इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीये आदिकाव्ये श्रीमद्युद्धकाण्डे चतुश्चत्वारिंशः सर्गः
Thus ends the forty-fourth sarga in the glorious Yuddha Kāṇḍa of the venerable Vālmīki’s Rāmāyaṇa, the first great poem.

Listen now to the forty-fifth sarga in the glorious Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa, Yuddha Kāṇḍa.
स तस्य गतिमन्विच्छन् राजपुत्रः प्रतापवान्। दिदेशातिबलो रामो दश वानरयूथपान्
Then Rāma, the mighty prince, seeking his enemy’s path, commanded ten leaders of the monkeys.
द्वौ सुषेणस्य दायादौ नीलं च प्लवगाधिपम्। अङ्गदं वालिपुत्रं च शरभं च तरस्विनम्
He sent the two sons of Suṣeṇa, Nīla the lord of monkeys, Aṅgada son of Vāli, and the swift Śarabha.
द्विविदं च हनूमन्तं सानुप्रस्थं महाबलम्। ऋषभं चर्षभस्कन्धमादिदेश परंतपः
He dispatched Dvivida, Hanumān, the powerful Sānuprastha, and Ṛṣabha with shoulders like a bull, the subduer of foes.
ते सम्प्रहृष्टा हरयो भीमानुद्यम्य पादपान्। आकाशं विविशुः सर्वे मार्गमाणा दिशो दश
Those mighty monkeys, delighted, seized great trees and all entered the sky, searching the ten directions.
तेषां वेगवतां वेगमिषुभिर्वेगवत्तरैः। अस्त्रवित् परमास्त्रस्तु वारयामास रावणिः
But Rāvaṇa’s son, skilled in weapons and supreme among archers, blocked those swift ones with arrows even swifter.
तं भीमवेगा हरयो नाराचैः क्षतविक्षताः। अन्धकारे न ददृशुर्मेघैः सूर्यमिवावृतम्
The monkeys, struck and wounded by sharp arrows, could not see him in the darkness, like the sun hidden by clouds.
रामलक्ष्मणयोरेव सर्वदेहभिदः शरान्। भृशमावेशयामास रावणिः समितिंजयः
Rāvaṇa’s son, the conqueror in battle, fiercely rained arrows that pierced the bodies of only Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa.
निरन्तरशरीरौ तु तावुभौ रामलक्ष्मणौ। क्रुद्धेनेन्द्रजिता वीरौ पन्नगैः शरतां गतैः
Those two heroes, Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa, their bodies covered without gap, were struck by the enraged Indrajit with arrows like serpents.
तयोः क्षतजमार्गेण सुस्राव रुधिरं बहु। तावुभौ च प्रकाशेते पुष्पिताविव किंशुकौ
From their wounds blood flowed abundantly, and both shone like blossoming kiṃśuka trees.
ततः पर्यन्तरक्ताक्षो भिन्नाञ्जनचयोपमः। रावणिर्भ्रातरौ वाक्यमन्तर्धानगतोऽब्रवीत्
Then Rāvaṇa’s son, his eyes bloodshot and dark as a mass of broken collyrium, spoke to the two brothers while remaining invisible.
युध्यमानमनालक्ष्यं शक्रोऽपि त्रिदशेश्वरः। द्रष्टुमासादितुं वापि न शक्तः किं पुनर्युवाम्
Even Indra, lord of the gods, could not see or approach me in battle—how much less could you two?
प्रापिताविषुजालेन राघवौ कङ्कपत्रिणा। एष रोषपरीतात्मा नयामि यमसादनम्
You Rāghavas, ensnared by my net of serpent-arrows with vulture-feathered shafts, I, filled with wrath, now send to the abode of Yama.
एवमुक्त्वा तु धर्मज्ञौ भ्रातरौ रामलक्ष्मणौ। निर्बिभेद शितैर्बाणैः प्रजहर्ष ननाद च
Having spoken thus, he pierced the righteous brothers Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa with sharp arrows, rejoicing and roaring.
भिन्नाञ्जनचयश्यामो विस्फार्य विपुलं धनुः। भूय एव शरान् घोरान् विससर्ज महामृधे
Dark as a mass of shattered collyrium, he drew his great bow and again released dreadful arrows in the mighty battle.
ततो मर्मसु मर्मज्ञो मज्जयन् निशितान् शरान्। रामलक्ष्मणयोर्वीरो ननाद च मुहुर्मुहुः
Then the hero, skilled in striking vital points, repeatedly roared as he drove sharp arrows into the vital spots of Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa.
बद्धौ तु शरबन्धेन तावुभौ रणमूर्धनि। निमेषान्तरमात्रेण न शेकतुरवेक्षितुम्
Bound by the serpent-arrow in the midst of battle, the two could not even glance at each other in the space of a moment.
ततो विभिन्नसर्वाङ्गौ शरशल्याचितौ कृतौ। ध्वजाविव महेन्द्रस्य रज्जुमुक्तौ प्रकम्पितौ
Then, with all their limbs pierced and covered with arrows, they were shaken like the banners of mighty Indra when their cords are cut.
तौ सम्प्रचलितौ वीरौ मर्मभेदेन कर्शितौ। निपेततुर्महेष्वासौ जगत्यां जगतीपती
Those two mighty archers, exhausted by wounds to their vital parts, wavered and fell to the earth—lords of the world brought low.
तौ वीरशयने वीरौ शयानौ रुधिरोक्षितौ। शरवेष्टितसर्वाङ्गावार्तौ परमपीडितौ
Lying on the bed of heroes, those two warriors, soaked in blood, their bodies encircled by arrows, were tormented and in utmost pain.
नह्यविद्धं तयोर्गात्रे बभूवाङ्गुलमन्तरम्। नानिर्विण्णं न चाध्वस्तमाकराग्रादजिह्मगैः
On their bodies, not even a finger's breadth was left unpierced; there was no spot untouched or unbroken by the straight-flying arrows from tip to tip.
तौ तु क्रूरेण निहतौ रक्षसा कामरूपिणा। असृक् सुस्रुवतुस्तीव्रं जलं प्रस्रवणाविव
Struck down by that cruel, shape-shifting demon, the two of them streamed forth blood intensely, like springs pouring out water.
पपात प्रथमं रामो विद्धो मर्मसु मार्गणैः। क्रोधादिन्द्रजिता येन पुरा शक्रो विनिर्जितः
Rama fell first, pierced in the vital points by arrows—the same Indrajit who once, in anger, defeated even Indra.
रुक्मपुङ्खैः प्रसन्नाग्रै रजोगतिभिराशुगैः। नाराचैरर्धनाराचैर्भल्लैरञ्जलिकैरपि। विव्याध वत्सदन्तैश्च सिंहदंष्ट्रैः क्षुरैस्तथा
With golden-feathered, sharp-tipped, swiftly flying arrows—broad-headed, half-broad, crescent, and hand-shaped, with calf-tooth and lion-fang heads, and razors too—he struck him.
स वीरशयने शिश्येऽविज्यमाविध्य कार्मुकम्। भिन्नमुष्टिपरीणाहं त्रिनतं रुक्मभूषितम्
There he lay on the bed of heroes, his great bow unstrung, its grip shattered, triple-curved and adorned with gold.
बाणपातान्तरे रामं पतितं पुरुषर्षभम्। स तत्र लक्ष्मणो दृष्ट्वा निराशो जीवितेऽभवत्
When Rama, the best of men, fell amid the shower of arrows, Lakshmana, seeing him there, lost all hope for life.
