शार्दूलसिंहाविव जातदंष्ट्रौ गजेन्द्रपोताविव सम्प्रयुक्तौ। संहत्य संवेद्य च तौ कराभ्यां तौ पेततुर्वै युगपद् धरायाम्
Like a tiger and a lion baring their fangs, like two mighty elephants locked in combat, they grappled and pressed each other with their hands, and both fell to the ground at the same moment.
उद्यम्य चान्योन्यमधिक्षिपन्तौ संचक्रमाते बहु युद्धमार्गे। व्यायामशिक्षाबलसम्प्रयुक्तौ क्लमं न तौ जग्मतुराशु वीरौ
Raising and hurling each other, they moved through many paths of battle; using all their training and strength, those two heroes did not grow weary.
बाहूत्तमैर्वारणवारणाभै- र्निवारयन्तौ परवारणाभौ। चिरेण कालेन भृशं प्रयुद्धौ संचेरतुर्मण्डलमार्गमाशु
With arms like the trunks of great elephants, each blocking the other's blows, after a long and intense struggle, they swiftly circled the field of battle.
तौ परस्परमासाद्य यत्तावन्योन्यसूदने। मार्जाराविव भक्षार्थेऽवतस्थाते मुहुर्मुहुः
Meeting each other, both striving with all their might to destroy the other, they stood again and again like two cats fighting for food.
मण्डलानि विचित्राणि स्थानानि विविधानि च। गोमूत्रकाणि चित्राणि गतप्रत्यागतानि च
They performed intricate circles, assumed various stances, made curious movements like the shape of a cow's urine, and advanced and retreated in many ways.
तिरश्चीनगतान्येव तथा वक्रगतानि च। परिमोक्षं प्रहाराणां वर्जनं परिधावनम्
They moved sideways and in curves, evaded and parried blows, and ran around each other.
अभिद्रवणमाप्लावमवस्थानं सविग्रहम्। परावृत्तमपावृत्तमपद्रुतमवप्लुतम्
They charged, leapt, stood their ground with resistance, turned back, withdrew, fled, and bounded away.
उपन्यस्तमपन्यस्तं युद्धमार्गविशारदौ। तौ विचेरतुरन्योन्यं वानरेन्द्रश्च रावणः
Placing and withdrawing themselves, both skilled in the ways of battle, the monkey king and Rāvaṇa circled each other.
एतस्मिन्नन्तरे रक्षो मायाबलमथात्मनः। आरब्धुमुपसम्पेदे ज्ञात्वा तं वानराधिपः
Meanwhile, the rākṣasa, knowing the monkey king, prepared to employ his magical power.
उत्पपात तदाऽऽकाशं जितकाशी जितक्लमः। रावणः स्थित एवात्र हरिराजेन वञ्चितः
Then Rāvaṇa, who had conquered the sky and overcome fatigue, sprang up into the air, yet remained there, deceived by the king of the monkeys.
अथ हरिवरनाथः प्राप्तसंग्रामकीर्ति- र्निशिचरपतिमाजौ योजयित्वा श्रमेण। गगनमतिविशालं लङ्घयित्वार्कसूनु- र्हरिगणबलमध्ये रामपार्श्वं जगाम
Then the lord of the foremost monkeys, famed for his prowess in battle, having engaged the lord of the night-walkers in combat and weariness, leapt across the vast sky, and, amidst the hosts of monkeys, went to Rāma's side.
इति स सवितृसूनुस्तत्र तत् कर्म कृत्वा पवनगतिरनीकं प्राविशत् सम्प्रहृष्टः। रघुवरनृपसूनोर्वर्धयन् युद्धहर्षं तरुमृगगणमुख्यैः पूज्यमानो हरीन्द्रः
Thus, the son of the sun, having performed that deed there, entered the army with the speed of the wind, rejoicing; increasing the joy of battle for Rāma, son of the best of the Raghu kings, and being honored by the foremost of monkeys and bears, the lord of the monkeys.

Then, seeing those omens, Rāma, elder brother of Lakṣmaṇa, embraced Sugrīva and spoke these words.
असम्मन्त्र्य मया सार्धं तदिदं साहसं कृतम्। एवं साहसयुक्तानि न कुर्वन्ति जनेश्वराः
This bold act was undertaken without consulting me; rulers of men do not act in such reckless ways.
संशये स्थाप्य मां चेदं बलं चेमं विभीषणम्। कष्टं कृतमिदं वीर साहसं साहसप्रिय
By placing me, this army, and Vibhīṣaṇa in danger, you have done a grievous thing, O hero, lover of daring deeds.
इदानीं मा कृथा वीर एवंविधमरिंदम। त्वयि किंचित्समापन्ने किं कार्यं सीतया मम
Now, O subduer of foes, do not act in such a way again; if anything were to happen to you, what purpose would Sītā or my own life serve for me?
भरतेन महाबाहो लक्ष्मणेन यवीयसा। शत्रुघ्नेन च शत्रुघ्न स्वशरीरेण वा पुनः
Whether it be by Bharata, the mighty-armed, by Lakṣmaṇa, my younger brother, by Śatrughna, or even by myself again—
त्वयि चानागते पूर्वमिति मे निश्चिता मतिः। जानतश्चापि ते वीर्यं महेन्द्रवरुणोपम
If you had not returned before, this was my firm resolve; for I know your strength, equal to Mahendra and Varuṇa.
हत्वाहं रावणं युद्धे सपुत्रबलवाहनम्। अभिषिच्य च लङ्कायां विभीषणमथापि च
Having slain Rāvaṇa in battle, along with his sons, forces, and vehicles, and having installed Vibhīṣaṇa in Laṅkā—
भरते राज्यमारोप्य त्यक्ष्ये देहं महाबल। तमेवं वादिनं रामं सुग्रीवः प्रत्यभाषत
I would place the kingdom in Bharata's hands and then, O mighty one, abandon my body; thus spoke Rāma.
तव भार्यापहर्तारं दृष्ट्वा राघव रावणम्। मर्षयामि कथं वीर जानन् विक्रममात्मनः
Sugrīva replied to Rāma, who spoke thus: 'O Rāghava, seeing Rāvaṇa, the abductor of your wife, how could I, knowing my own valor, endure it?'
इत्येवं वादिनं वीरमभिनन्द्य च राघवः। लक्ष्मणं लक्ष्मिसम्पन्नमिदं वचनमब्रवीत्
Thus, as the hero spoke, Rāghava, having welcomed him, addressed these words to Lakṣmaṇa, endowed with fortune:
परिगृह्योदकं शीतं वनानि फलवन्ति च। बलौघं संविभज्येमं व्यूह्य तिष्ठाम लक्ष्मण
Let us gather cool water and fruits from the forests, divide this army into battalions, and arrange our formation, O Lakṣmaṇa.
लोकक्षयकरं भीमं भयं पश्याम्युपस्थितम्। निबर्हणं प्रवीराणामृक्षवानररक्षसाम्
I see a terrible, world-destroying fear approaching, threatening the destruction of the brave among the bears, monkeys, and rākṣasas.
वाता हि परुषं वान्ति कम्पते च वसुंधरा। पर्वताग्राणि वेपन्ते नदन्ति धरणीधराः
The winds blow harshly, the earth trembles, mountain peaks shake, and the mountains roar.
मेघाः क्रव्यादसंकाशाः परुषाः परुषस्वराः। क्रूराः क्रूरं प्रवर्षन्ते मिश्रं शोणितबिन्दुभिः
Clouds, resembling flesh-eaters, are harsh and emit harsh sounds; they pour cruelly, mingled with drops of blood.
रक्तचन्दनसंकाशा संध्या परमदारुणा। ज्वलच्च निपतत्येतदादित्यादग्निमण्डलम्
The twilight is exceedingly red, like red sandalwood, and this blazing solar orb is falling from the sun.
आदित्यमभिवाश्यन्ति जनयन्तो महद्भयम्। दीना दीनस्वरा घोरा अप्रशस्ता मृगद्विजाः
The animals and birds, distressed and with pitiful voices, utter fearful cries toward the sun, producing great dread; they are ominous and inauspicious.
रजन्यामप्रकाशश्च संतापयति चन्द्रमाः। कृष्णरक्तांशुपर्यन्तो यथा लोकस्य संक्षये
At night, the moon gives no light and torments with its presence, its rays ending in black and red, as if at the destruction of the world.
ह्रस्वो रूक्षोऽप्रशस्तश्च परिवेषः सुलोहितः। आदित्यमण्डले नीलं लक्ष्म लक्ष्मण दृश्यते
A short, harsh, and inauspicious halo, deep red in color, is seen encircling the sun's disk, O Lakshmana, and a blue mark appears.
