Having spoken these words, Mālyavān, after observing the mind of the lord of the rākṣasas, that peerless, supremely valiant elder, remained silent, watching Rāvaṇa.

Hear now the thirty-sixth sarga in the glorious Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa, Yuddha Kāṇḍa.
But the ten-headed one, with a wicked heart, overcome by fate, could not tolerate the beneficial words spoken by Mālyavān.
He, furrowing his brow and his eyes turning in anger, under the sway of wrath, spoke to Mālyavān out of indignation.
When harsh words, though spoken with good intent, are uttered, siding with the enemy, such speech does not reach my ears.
How do you consider Rāma, a miserable man, alone, dwelling among forest creatures, abandoned by his father, to be capable?
How do you regard me, lord of the rākṣasas and a terror to the gods, as lacking in prowess, when I am not deficient in any valor?
I suspect, either from hatred of heroes or partiality toward the enemy, or by encouraging the other side, you have addressed me with harsh words.
Who, being wise and learned in the essence of the scriptures, would speak harshly to one established in power, except out of encouragement for the enemy?
Having brought Sītā from the forest, like fortune bereft of the lotus, why should I return her to Rāghava out of fear?
Surrounded by countless monkeys, with Sugrīva and Lakṣmaṇa, see how, within a few days, I will slay Rāghava.
Even the gods cannot stand against me in battle; why then should Rāvaṇa feel fear in war?
Even if I were split in two, I would not bow to anyone; this is my innate fault, a nature impossible to overcome.
If indeed a bridge has been built across the ocean by Rāma, merely by chance, what is there to marvel at? Why has fear come upon you?
But Rāma, having crossed the sea with the army of monkeys, I assure you in truth, will not return alive.
Recognizing Rāvaṇa as angry and agitated while speaking thus, Mālyavān, ashamed, did not offer any reply.
After blessing the king with wishes for victory as was proper, Mālyavān, having received permission, went to his own residence.
Then Rāvaṇa, together with his ministers, deliberated and arranged for the defense of Laṅkā.
He assigned Prahasta, the rākṣasa, to the eastern gate, and to the southern gate, the mighty Mahāpārśva and Mahodara.
Then, at the western gate, he appointed his son Indrajit, skilled in great magic, surrounded by many rākṣasas.
At the northern city gate, he assigned Śuka and Sāraṇa, and said to his ministers, 'I myself will go here.'
He stationed Virūpākṣa, a rākṣasa of great strength and valor, in the central division, along with many rākṣasas.
Having thus arranged the defense of Laṅkā, the foremost among rākṣasas, prompted by fate, considered himself as having fulfilled his duty.
Then, after instructing the ministers and ordering the complete arrangement of the city, honored by the ministers with blessings for victory, he entered the splendid inner palace.

The thirty-seventh chapter is to be heard. In the glorious Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa, in the Book of War, the thirty-seventh chapter.
There were the human and monkey kings, the wind-born monkey, Jāmbavān the king of bears, and Vibhīṣaṇa the rākṣasa.
Aṅgada, son of Vāli, Saumitri, Śarabha the monkey, Suṣeṇa with his son, Mainda, and Dvivida as well.
Gaja, Gavākṣa, Kumuda, Nala, and Panasa likewise, all assembled, entered the enemy's territory, encouraging one another.
This is the city of Laṅkā, ruled by Rāvaṇa, visible before us; unconquerable even by gods, asuras, serpents, and gandharvas.
Let us deliberate, keeping success in our task foremost, for Rāvaṇa, the lord of rākṣasas, is always present here.
