स प्रमादात् प्रवृद्धस्तेऽधर्मोऽहिर्ग्रसते हि नः। विवर्धयति पक्षं च सुराणां सुरभावनः
That unrighteousness, grown through your negligence, now devours us like a serpent; and the creator of the gods increases the strength of the gods' side.
विषयेषु प्रसक्तेन यत्किंचित्कारिणा त्वया। ऋषीणामग्निकल्पानामुद्वेगो जनितो महान्
Because you, attached to sense-objects, have acted carelessly, you have caused great distress among the sages, who are like fire.
तेषां प्रभावो दुर्धर्षः प्रदीप्त इव पावकः। तपसा भावितात्मानो धर्मस्यानुग्रहे रताः
Their power is hard to withstand, blazing like fire; their souls are purified by austerity, and they are devoted to the favor of righteousness.
मुख्यैर्यज्ञैर्यजन्त्येते तैस्तैर्यत्ते द्विजातयः। जुह्वत्यग्नींश्च विधिवद् वेदांश्चोच्चैरधीयते
These twice-born ones worship with principal sacrifices, and with those same sacrifices they properly offer oblations into the fires and loudly recite the Vedas.
अभिभूय च रक्षांसि ब्रह्मघोषानुदीरयन्। दिशो विप्रद्रुताः सर्वाः स्तनयित्नुरिवोष्णगे
Overcoming the Rākṣasas and raising the sound of sacred chants, they have caused all directions to be disturbed, like thunder in the hot season.
ऋषीणामग्निकल्पानामग्निहोत्रसमुत्थितः। आदत्ते रक्षसां तेजो धूमो व्याप्य दिशो दश
From the fire-offerings of the sages, who are like fire, a smoke arises that pervades the ten directions and takes away the energy of the Rākṣasas.
तेषु तेषु च देशेषु पुण्येष्वेव दृढव्रतैः। चर्यमाणं तपस्तीव्रं संतापयति राक्षसान्
In those various sacred places, the intense austerity practiced by those of firm vows torments the Rākṣasas.
देवदानवयक्षेभ्यो गृहीतश्च वरस्त्वया। मनुष्या वानरा ऋक्षा गोलाङ्गूला महाबलाः। बलवन्त इहागम्य गर्जन्ति दृढविक्रमाः
You have received a boon from the gods, Dānavas, and Yakṣas; but now, humans, monkeys, bears, and mighty langurs have come here, roaring with firm valor.
उत्पातान् विविधान् दृष्ट्वा घोरान् बहुविधान् बहून्। विनाशमनुपश्यामि सर्वेषां रक्षसामहम्
Seeing many and various dreadful omens, I foresee the destruction of all the Rākṣasas.
खराभिस्तनिता घोरा मेघाः प्रतिभयंकराः। शोणितेनाभिवर्षन्ति लङ्कामुष्णेन सर्वतः
Terrible clouds, dark as the wild ass, threatening with fear, pour hot blood over all of Laṅkā.
रुदतां वाहनानां च प्रपतन्त्यश्रुबिन्दवः। रजोध्वस्ता विवर्णाश्च न प्रभान्ति यथापुरम्
Tears fall from the eyes of weeping animals, and covered in dust, they appear discolored and do not shine as before.
व्याला गोमायवो गृध्रा वाश्यन्ति च सुभैरवम्। प्रविश्य लङ्कामारामे समवायांश्च कुर्वते
Wild beasts, jackals, and vultures howl most fearfully, entering Laṅkā's gardens and gathering together.
कालिकाः पाण्डुरैर्दन्तैः प्रहसन्त्यग्रतः स्थिताः। स्त्रियः स्वप्नेषु मुष्णन्त्यो गृहाणि प्रतिभाष्य च
Black women with pale teeth stand laughing in front; in dreams, women steal from houses and speak ominously.
गृहाणां बलिकर्माणि श्वानः पर्युपभुञ्जते। खरा गोषु प्रजायन्ते मूषका नकुलेषु च
Dogs consume the offerings in the houses; wild asses are born among cows, and mice among mongooses.
मार्जारा द्वीपिभिः सार्धं सूकराः शुनकैः सह। किंनरा राक्षसैश्चापि समेयुर्मानुषैः सह
Cats mingle with leopards, pigs with dogs; Kinnaras and Rākṣasas are seen together with humans.
पाण्डुरा रक्तपादाश्च विहगाः कालचोदिताः। राक्षसानां विनाशाय कपोता विचरन्ति च
Driven by time, pale pigeons with red feet wander about for the destruction of the rākṣasas.
चीचीकूचीति वाशन्त्यः शारिका वेश्मसु स्थिताः। पतन्ति ग्रथिताश्चापि निर्जिताः कलहैषिभिः
The mynah birds, settled in the houses, call out 'cīcīkū', and, entangled and defeated by those seeking quarrel, they fall down.
पक्षिणश्च मृगाः सर्वे प्रत्यादित्यं रुदन्ति ते। करालो विकटो मुण्डः पुरुषः कृष्णपिङ्गलः
All the birds and beasts cry out facing the sun; a fierce, dreadful, bald man, dark and tawny, is seen.
कालो गृहाणि सर्वेषां काले कालेऽन्ववेक्षते। एतान्यन्यानि दुष्टानि निमित्तान्युत्पतन्ति च
Time, in terrifying form, observes the houses of all, again and again; these and other evil omens are arising.
येन बद्धः समुद्रे च सेतुः स परमाद्भुतः। कुरुष्व नरराजेन संधिं रामेण रावण। ज्ञात्वावधार्य कर्माणि क्रियतामायतिक्षमम्
By whom the wondrous bridge was built across the ocean—make peace, O Rāvaṇa, with Rāma, the king of men; know and consider what actions are fitting for the future.
इदं वचस्तस्य निगद्य माल्यवान् परीक्ष्य रक्षोधिपतेर्मनः पुनः। अनुत्तमेषूत्तमपौरुषो बली बभूव तूष्णीं समवेक्ष्य रावणम्
Having spoken these words, Mālyavān, after observing the mind of the lord of the rākṣasas, that peerless, supremely valiant elder, remained silent, watching Rāvaṇa.

Hear now the thirty-sixth sarga in the glorious Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa, Yuddha Kāṇḍa.
तत् तु माल्यवतो वाक्यं हितमुक्तं दशाननः। न मर्षयति दुष्टात्मा कालस्य वशमागतः
But the ten-headed one, with a wicked heart, overcome by fate, could not tolerate the beneficial words spoken by Mālyavān.
स बद्ध्वा भ्रुकुटिं वक्त्रे क्रोधस्य वशमागतः। अमर्षात् परिवृत्ताक्षो माल्यवन्तमथाब्रवीत्
He, furrowing his brow and his eyes turning in anger, under the sway of wrath, spoke to Mālyavān out of indignation.
हितबुद्ध्या यदहितं वचः परुषमुच्यते। परपक्षं प्रविश्यैव नैतच्छ्रोत्रगतं मम
When harsh words, though spoken with good intent, are uttered, siding with the enemy, such speech does not reach my ears.
मानुषं कृपणं राममेकं शाखामृगाश्रयम्। समर्थं मन्यसे केन त्यक्तं पित्रा वनाश्रयम्
How do you consider Rāma, a miserable man, alone, dwelling among forest creatures, abandoned by his father, to be capable?
रक्षसामीश्वरं मां च देवानां च भयंकरम्। हीनं मां मन्यसे केन अहीनं सर्वविक्रमैः
How do you regard me, lord of the rākṣasas and a terror to the gods, as lacking in prowess, when I am not deficient in any valor?
वीरद्वेषेण वा शङ्के पक्षपातेन वा रिपोः। त्वयाहं परुषाण्युक्तो परप्रोत्साहनेन वा
I suspect, either from hatred of heroes or partiality toward the enemy, or by encouraging the other side, you have addressed me with harsh words.
प्रभवन्तं पदस्थं हि परुषं कोऽभिभाषते। पण्डितः शास्त्रतत्त्वज्ञो विना प्रोत्साहनेन वा
Who, being wise and learned in the essence of the scriptures, would speak harshly to one established in power, except out of encouragement for the enemy?
आनीय च वनात् सीतां पद्महीनामिव श्रियम्। किमर्थं प्रतिदास्यामि राघवस्य भयादहम्
Having brought Sītā from the forest, like fortune bereft of the lotus, why should I return her to Rāghava out of fear?
