Hearing the decision of that evil-minded one, who was resolute in his purpose, she quickly returned again to the auspicious Ashoka grove.
Having entered there, she saw the daughter of Janaka, waiting for her own deliverance, like fortune fallen from a withered lotus.
Sita, seeing Sarama, who spoke kindly and had returned, embraced her affectionately and offered her a seat herself.
Sit here and tell me everything truly and in detail: what is the cruel Ravana’s intention?
Thus addressed by the trembling Sita, Sarama related everything that Ravana had said among his counselors.
The king of the rakshasas, urged by his mother and by his elder counselor, spoke at length for your release, O Vaidehi, with great affection.
Let Maithili be respectfully returned to the king of men; the marvel that happened in Janasthana is proof enough for you.
Who among men could cross the ocean, see Hanuman, and slay the rakshasas in battle?
Though thus advised repeatedly by his mother and the wise counselors, he, being intent on his own interests, is not willing to release you.
O Maithili, even Death himself cannot release you in battle; this is the resolve of that cruel king and his ministers.
Therefore, this firm resolve has arisen in him from a desire for death; out of fear, he is unable to release you, and he remains unshaken in battle.
By killing Ravana in battle, along with all the Rakshasas and himself, Rama will surely return you, O dark-eyed one, to Ayodhya with his sharp arrows.
Meanwhile, a tumultuous sound of drums and conches was heard, shaking the earth and filling all the armies.
Hearing that roar of the Vanara army, the servants of the Rakshasa king in Lanka, their strength destroyed and actions overcome by despair, see no hope for good due to the king's fault.
Hear now the thirty-fifth sarga in the glorious Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa, in the Yuddha Kāṇḍa.
With that resounding noise of drums mingled with conches, Rama, the mighty-armed conqueror of enemy cities, advances.
Then Ravana, lord of the Rakshasas, hearing that tumult, entered into contemplation for a moment and looked upon his ministers.
Then Ravana, of great strength, addressing all those ministers there, made the whole assembly hall resound and spoke thus:
The lord of the Rakshasas, cruel and tormentor of the world, praised the crossing of this ocean, his valor, and his strength and heroism.
What you have said about Rama, I have heard; and I also know your true prowess in battle. Seeing each other silent, you know Rama's valor.
Then the exceedingly wise Mālyavān, a Rakshasa, hearing Ravana's words, spoke thus as his maternal grandfather:
O King, that ruler who is well-versed in knowledge and follows policy, governs for a long time and brings his enemies under control.
By making alliances at the right time and engaging with enemies, while increasing his own side, he attains great sovereignty.
When declining, a king should make peace on equal terms; he should not underestimate the enemy, and should wage war only against a superior foe.
Therefore, Ravana, I favor peace with Rama; for the sake of which you have been attacked, let Sita be returned to him.
All the divine sages and Gandharvas, desiring victory, do not wish for enmity with him; let peace with him be pleasing to you.
The Blessed Creator, the Grandfather, produced only two sides: that of the gods and that of the demons, founded on righteousness and unrighteousness.
Indeed, righteousness is said to be the side of the immortal great souls; unrighteousness is the side of the demons and the Rākṣasas, O Rākṣasa.
When the age of righteousness prevails, righteousness consumes unrighteousness; when the age of Tiṣya arises, unrighteousness consumes righteousness.
Thus, as you have acted in the worlds, even great righteousness has been destroyed; unrighteousness has been embraced, and because of this, our enemies have become stronger than us.
