Hearing this report from the demon, the ten-headed one left the Ashoka grove and went to see his ministers.
Having considered all his actions with his ministers, and knowing the strength of Rāma, he entered the assembly and made his arrangements.
Then, immediately after Rāvaṇa departed, that head and that excellent bow vanished from sight.
The lord of the demons, together with his ministers of terrible prowess, then deliberated on the course of action regarding Rāma.
Rāvaṇa, the lord of the demons, addressed all the nearby chiefs of the army, his well-wishers, in words as stern as death.
Quickly, with the loud and clear sound of the war drum struck at the corner, assemble the armies; the reason need not be announced.
Then, accepting his command with 'So be it,' the messengers at once gathered the great army and reported to their lord, who was eager for battle, both those assembled and those still arriving.
Listen to the thirty-third sarga (chapter) in the glorious Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa, Yuddha Kāṇḍa.
Seeing Sītā deluded, a demoness named Saramā approached the beloved and devoted Vaidehī as a dear friend.
Saramā, gentle in speech, comforted Sītā, who was deeply distressed and deceived by the king of demons.
There, Saramā, compassionate and firm in her vows, had become Sītā's friend, protected by Sītā and herself assigned by Rāvaṇa to guard her.
That friend Saramā saw Sītā, her senses lost, sitting turned away and fallen, like a mare collapsed in the dust.
She comforted her devoted friend out of affection, saying, 'Take heart, Vaidehī, let not your mind be troubled; what Rāvaṇa said to you and what you yourself have resolved—'
'Out of friendship, timid one, I have promised you everything; hiding in the lonely forest, casting aside fear of Rāvaṇa, for your sake, wide-eyed one, I have no fear of Rāvaṇa.'
Whatever caused the lord of demons to rush out in agitation, I, Maithilī, know all about it, having gone out myself.
It is not possible to carry out a night attack against Rāma, who knows his own self; nor is it fitting to kill that tiger among men.
But the monkeys, who dwell among the trees, cannot be slain in this way; for they are protected by Rāma, just as the gods are by the best of the gods.
He is long-armed, illustrious, broad-chested, and mighty; an archer equipped for battle, righteous, and renowned on earth.
Valiant, ever the protector of himself and others, together with his brother Lakṣmaṇa, noble, and learned in the science of statecraft.
He is the destroyer of hostile hosts, of immeasurable strength and prowess; the illustrious Rāghava, slayer of enemies, O Sītā, has not been killed.
By an act of misguided judgment, opposed to all beings, such a cruel illusion was employed against you by the master of illusion.
Let your sorrow be gone; all good fortune has come to you. Surely, prosperity attends you, and your beloved is safe—listen.
Rāma, having crossed the ocean with the army of monkeys, has encamped upon the southern shore, having reached it.
I have seen Kākutstha, fulfilled in purpose, together with Lakṣmaṇa, standing protected with the forces that have crossed the ocean.
The swift-moving rākṣasas who were sent by him have brought back the news here that Rāghava has crossed over.
Hearing this report, O wide-eyed one, the lord of the rākṣasas, Rāvaṇa, is now consulting with all his ministers.
Thus speaking, Saramā, the rākṣasī, together with Sītā, heard the dreadful sound of the army's full preparation.
Hearing the great roar of the war drum, sounding like thunder, Saramā, sweet-spoken, said this to Sītā:
This, O timid one, is the terrifying war drum that signals the arming for battle; listen to the deep drumbeat, like the rumble of clouds.
Mad elephants are being arrayed, chariots and horses are being yoked; thousands of warriors, armed with spears, are seen mounted on horses.
