श्रीमता राजराजेन लङ्कायामभिषेचितः। त्वामसौ प्रतिसंरब्धो युद्धायैषोऽभिवर्तते
Consecrated as king in splendid Laṅkā by the lord of kings, he now approaches you, filled with zeal for battle.
तेजसा यशसा बुद्ध्या बलेनाभिजनेन च। यः कपीनतिबभ्राज हिमवानिव पर्वतः
By his brilliance, fame, wisdom, strength, and noble lineage, he among the monkeys shone forth like the Himālaya mountain.
किष्किन्धां यः समध्यास्ते गुहां सगहनद्रुमाम्। दुर्गां पर्वतदुर्गम्यां प्रधानैः सह यूथपैः
He who dwells in Kiṣkindhā, a cave thick with dense trees, a fortress difficult to reach as a mountain, together with the chief leaders of the troops—
यस्यैषा काञ्चनी माला शोभते शतपुष्करा। कान्ता देवमनुष्याणां यस्यां लक्ष्मीः प्रतिष्ठिता
He upon whom this golden garland, adorned with a hundred lotuses, shines—beloved among gods and men, in whom fortune abides—
एतां मालां च तारां च कपिराज्यं च शाश्वतम्। सुग्रीवो वालिनं हत्वा रामेण प्रतिपादितः
This garland, Tārā, and the eternal monkey kingdom were bestowed upon Sugrīva, after he slew Vālin, by Rāma.
शतं शतसहस्राणां कोटिमाहुर्मनीषिणः। शतं कोटिसहस्राणां शङ्कुरित्यभिधीयते
A hundred thousand is called a koṭi by the wise; a hundred koṭis is known as a śaṅku.
शतं शङ्कुसहस्राणां महाशङ्कुरिति स्मृतः। महाशङ्कुसहस्राणां शतं वृन्दमिहोच्यते
A hundred thousand śaṅkus is remembered as a mahāśaṅku; a hundred mahāśaṅkus is here called a vṛnda.
शतं वृन्दसहस्राणां महावृन्दमिति स्मृतम्। महावृन्दसहस्राणां शतं पद्ममिहोच्यते
A hundred thousand vṛndas is remembered as a mahāvṛnda; a hundred mahāvṛndas is here called a padma.
शतं पद्मसहस्राणां महापद्ममिति स्मृतम्। महापद्मसहस्राणां शतं खर्वमिहोच्यते
A hundred thousand padmas is remembered as a mahāpadma; a hundred mahāpadmas is here called a kharva.
शतं खर्वसहस्राणां महाखर्वमिति स्मृतम्। महाखर्वसहस्राणां समुद्रमभिधीयते। शतं समुद्रसाहस्रमोघ इत्यभिधीयते
A hundred thousand kharvas is remembered as a mahākharva; a hundred mahākharvas is called a samudra; a hundred thousand samudras is called an ogha.
शतमोघसहस्राणां महौघा इति विश्रुतः। एवं कोटिसहस्रेण शङ्कूनां च शतेन च। महाशङ्कुसहस्रेण तथा वृन्दशतेन च
A hundred thousand oghas is renowned as a mahaugha; thus, with a crore of koṭis, a hundred śaṅkus, a thousand mahāśaṅkus, and a hundred vṛndas—
महावृन्दसहस्रेण तथा पद्मशतेन च। महापद्मसहस्रेण तथा खर्वशतेन च
A thousand mahāvṛndas, a hundred padmas, a thousand mahāpadmas, and a hundred kharvas—
समुद्रेण च तेनैव महौघेन तथैव च एष कोटिमहौघेन समुद्रसदृशेन च
And with a samudra, likewise a mahaugha—such is the multitude, equal to a crore of mahaughas and like a samudra.
विभीषणेन वीरेण सचिवैः परिवारितः। सुग्रीवो वानरेन्द्रस्त्वां युद्धार्थमनुवर्तते। महाबलवृतो नित्यं महाबलपराक्रमः
Surrounded by the valiant Vibhishana and his counselors, Sugriva, the king of the monkeys, follows you for the sake of battle, always accompanied by mighty warriors and himself possessing great strength and valor.
इमां महाराज समीक्ष्य वाहिनी- मुपस्थितां प्रज्वलितग्रहोपमाम्। ततः प्रयत्नः परमो विधीयतां यथा जयः स्यान्न परैः पराभवः
O great king, seeing this army assembled, blazing like a mass of flaming planets, now let the utmost effort be made so that victory may be yours and not defeat by the enemy.

शुकेन तु समादिष्टान् दृष्ट्वा स हरियूथपान्। लक्ष्मणं च महावीर्यं भुजं रामस्य दक्षिणम्
When Shuka had given his instructions, Ravana saw the monkey chiefs, the mighty Lakshmana, and Rama's right arm.
समीपस्थं च रामस्य भ्रातरं च विभीषणम्। सर्ववानरराजं च सुग्रीवं भीमविक्रमम्
He also saw Vibhishana, Rama's brother, standing nearby, and Sugriva, the king of all the monkeys, of terrible prowess.
अङ्गदं चापि बलिनं वज्रहस्तात्मजात्मजम्। हनूमन्तं च विक्रान्तं जाम्बवन्तं च दुर्जयम्
He saw Angada, the powerful son of Vali, Hanuman the valiant, and Jambavan, who is hard to conquer.
सुषेणं कुमुदं नीलं नलं च प्लवगर्षभम्। गजं गवाक्षं शरभं मैन्दं च द्विविदं तथा
He saw Sushena, Kumuda, Nila, Nala the foremost of monkeys, Gaja, Gavaksha, Sharabha, Mainda, and also Dvivida.
किंचिदाविग्नहृदयो जातक्रोधश्च रावणः। भर्त्सयामास तौ वीरौ कथान्ते शुकसारणौ
With his heart somewhat disturbed and anger arising, Ravana rebuked those two heroes, Shuka and Sarana, at the end of their speech.
अधोमुखौ तौ प्रणतावब्रवीच्छुकसारणौ। रोषगद्गदया वाचा संरब्धं परुषं तथा
Those two, Shuka and Sarana, with faces turned downward and bowing, he addressed with a voice choked by anger, speaking harshly in agitation.
न तावत् सदृशं नाम सचिवैरुपजीविभिः। विप्रियं नृपतेर्वक्तुं निग्रहे प्रग्रहे प्रभोः
It is not proper for ministers or dependents to speak unpleasant words to a king, their lord, whether in restraint or in encouragement.
रिपूणां प्रतिकूलानां युद्धार्थमभिवर्तताम्। उभाभ्यां सदृशं नाम वक्तुमप्रस्तवे स्तवम्
It may be fitting for both of you to praise the enemies who have come for battle, but not at an inappropriate time.
आचार्या गुरवो वृद्धा वृथा वां पर्युपासिताः। सारं यद् राजशास्त्राणामनुजीव्यं न गृह्यते
Teachers, elders, and preceptors have been served by you in vain; you have not grasped the essence of royal treatises, though you live by them.
गृहीतो वा न विज्ञातो भारोऽज्ञानस्य वाह्यते। ईदृशैः सचिवैर्युक्तो मूर्खैर्दिष्ट्या धराम्यहम्
Even if you have learned them, you have not understood them; you bear the burden of ignorance. By fate, I endure such foolish ministers.
किं नु मृत्योर्भयं नास्ति मां वक्तुं परुषं वचः। यस्य मे शासतो जिह्वा प्रयच्छति शुभाशुभम्
Is there no fear of death that you dare to speak harsh words to me? For, while I command, your tongue utters what is auspicious or inauspicious.
अप्येव दहनं स्पृष्ट्वा वने तिष्ठन्ति पादपाः। राजदण्डपरामृष्टास्तिष्ठन्ते नापराधिनः
Even trees, though scorched by fire, remain standing in the forest; but those touched by royal punishment do not remain if they are guilty.
हन्यामहं त्विमौ पापौ शत्रुपक्षप्रशंसिनौ। यदि पूर्वोपकारैर्मे क्रोधो न मृदुतां व्रजेत्
I would kill these two wicked ones, who praise the enemy's side, if my anger were not softened by their previous good deeds.
अपध्वंसत नश्यध्वं संनिकर्षादितो मम। नहि वां हन्तुमिच्छामि स्मराम्युपकृतानि वाम्। हतावेव कृतघ्नौ द्वौ मयि स्नेहपराङ्मुखौ
Depart, perish, get away from my presence! I do not wish to kill you, for I remember your services. Yet, you two are as good as dead to me, being ungrateful and turned away from my affection.
