यस्तु कर्णौ विवृणुते जृम्भते च पुनः पुनः। न तु संविजते मृत्योर्न च सेनां प्रधावति
He spreads his ears wide and yawns again and again, yet he does not tremble before death nor flee from the army.
प्रकम्पते च रोषेण तिर्यक् च पुनरीक्षते। पश्य लाङ्गूलविक्षेपं क्ष्वेडत्येष महाबलः
He shakes with anger and glances sideways; see how he lashes his tail and snorts, this mighty one.
महाजवो वीतभयो रम्यं साल्वेयपर्वतम्। राजन् सततमध्यास्ते शरभो नाम यूथपः
Swift and fearless, he dwells always upon the pleasant Salveya mountain; O king, he is Sharabha, the leader of the troop.
एतस्य बलिनः सर्वे विहारा नाम यूथपाः। राजन् शतसहस्राणि चत्वारिंशत्तथैव च
All the leaders called Vihara belong to this powerful one; O king, they number forty hundred thousand.
यस्तु मेघ इवाकाशं महानावृत्य तिष्ठति। मध्ये वानरवीराणां सुराणामिव वासवः
He who stands like a great cloud covering the sky, among the heroic monkeys, like Indra among the gods—
भेरीणामिव संनादो यस्यैष श्रूयते महान्। घोषः शाखामृगेन्द्राणां संग्राममभिकाङ्क्षताम्
The great sound heard from him is like the beating of drums, the roar of the branch-lion leaders longing for battle.
एष पर्वतमध्यास्ते पारियात्रमनुत्तमम्। युद्धे दुष्प्रसहो नित्यं पनसो नाम यूथपः
He dwells in the midst of the supreme mountain Pariyatra; always unconquerable in battle, he is Panasa, the leader of the troop.
एनं शतसहस्राणां शतार्धं पर्युपासते। यूथपा यूथपश्रेष्ठं येषां यूथानि भागशः
Half a hundred thousand leaders attend him, the foremost among troop-leaders, whose troops are divided by rank.
यस्तु भीमां प्रवल्गन्तीं चमूं तिष्ठति शोभयन्। स्थितां तीरे समुद्रस्य द्वितीय इव सागरः
He who beautifies the terrifying, surging army stationed on the shore of the ocean, like a second sea—
एष दर्दुरसंकाशो विनतो नाम यूथपः। पिबंश्चरति यो वेणां नदीनामुत्तमां नदीम्
This one, resembling a frog, is Vinata, the leader of the troop, who roams drinking the waters of the best river, the Vena.
षष्टिः शतसहस्राणि बलमस्य प्लवंगमाः। त्वामाह्वयति युद्धाय क्रोधनो नाम वानरः
Sixty hundred thousand monkeys are his force; a monkey named Krodhana calls you to battle.
विक्रान्ता बलवन्तश्च यथा यूथानि भागशः। यस्तु गैरिकवर्णाभं वपुः पुष्यति वानरः
Valiant and strong, their troops are divided by rank; and this monkey, whose body shines like red ochre—
अवमत्य सदा सर्वान् वानरान् बलदर्पितः। गवयो नाम तेजस्वी त्वां क्रोधादभिवर्तते
Always scorning all the monkeys, proud of his strength, the radiant Gavaya advances toward you in anger.
एनं शतसहस्राणि सप्ततिः पर्युपासते। एषैवाशंसते लङ्कां स्वेनानीकेन मर्दितुम्
Seventy hundred thousand surround him in attendance; he alone hopes to crush Lanka with his own army.
एते दुष्प्रसहा वीरा येषां संख्या न विद्यते। यूथपा यूथपश्रेष्ठास्तेषां यूथानि भागशः
These are invincible heroes whose number is unknown; they are chiefs of troops, and their groups are divided by rank.

तांस्तु ते सम्प्रवक्ष्यामि प्रेक्षमाणस्य यूथपान्। राघवार्थे पराक्रान्ता ये न रक्षन्ति जीवितम्
I will now describe those chiefs whom you see, who have advanced for Rāghava's cause and do not value their lives.
स्निग्धा यस्य बहुव्यामा दीर्घलाङ्गूलमाश्रिताः। ताम्राः पीताः सिताः श्वेताः प्रकीर्णा घोरकर्मणः
Many strong, affectionate ones, with long tails, have gathered around him; they are coppery, yellow, white, and scattered, fierce in their deeds.
प्रगृहीताः प्रकाशन्ते सूर्यस्येव मरीचयः। पृथिव्यां चानुकृष्यन्ते हरो नामैष वानरः
When assembled, they shine like rays of the sun; they move across the earth, and this monkey is called Hara by name.
यं पृष्ठतोऽनुगच्छन्ति शतशोऽथ सहस्रशः। वृक्षानुद्यम्य सहसा लङ्कारोहणतत्पराः
Hundreds and thousands follow him from behind, swiftly raising trees, eager to ascend Lanka.
यूथपा हरिराजस्य किंकराः समुपस्थिताः। नीलानिव महामेघांस्तिष्ठतो यांस्तु पश्यसि
These are the attendants of the monkey king, the chiefs whom you see standing, like dark clouds.
असिताञ्जनसंकाशान् युद्धे सत्यपराक्रमान्। असंख्येयाननिर्देशान् परं पारमिवोदधेः
They resemble black collyrium, steadfast in battle; countless and indescribable, like the far shore of the ocean.
पर्वतेषु च ये केचिद् विषयेषु नदीषु च। एते त्वामभिवर्तन्ते राजन्नृक्षाः सुदारुणाः
Wherever they are, on mountains, in regions, or rivers, these fierce bears are advancing upon you, O king.
एषां मध्ये स्थितो राजन् भीमाक्षो भीमदर्शनः। पर्जन्य इव जीमूतैः समन्तात् परिवारितः
In their midst stands Bhīmākṣa, terrifying in appearance, surrounded on all sides by clouds like a rain-god.
ऋक्षवन्तं गिरिश्रेष्ठमध्यास्ते नर्मदां पिबन्। सर्वर्क्षाणामधिपतिर्धूम्रो नामैष यूथपः
He dwells atop the best mountain, drinking the Narmadā; he is lord of all bears, named Dhūmra, chief of troops.
यवीयानस्य तु भ्राता पश्यैनं पर्वतोपमम्। भ्रात्रा समानो रूपेण विशिष्टस्तु पराक्रमे
Behold his younger brother, mountain-like in form; equal to his brother in appearance, but superior in valor.
स एष जाम्बवान् नाम महायूथपयूथपः। प्रशान्तो गुरुवर्ती च सम्प्रहारेष्वमर्षणः
This is Jāmbavān by name, chief of great troop-chiefs; calm, respectful to elders, yet relentless in battle.
एतेन साह्यं तु महत् कृतं शक्रस्य धीमता। दैवासुरे जाम्बवता लब्धाश्च बहवो वराः
He aided the wise Indra greatly; Jāmbavān fought in the war of gods and demons, and received many boons.
आरुह्य पर्वताग्रेभ्यो महाभ्रविपुलाः शिलाः। मुञ्चन्ति विपुलाकारा न मृत्योरुद्विजन्ति च
Climbing mountain peaks, they hurl massive rocks like great clouds; they do not fear death.
राक्षसानां च सदृशाः पिशाचानां च रोमशाः। एतस्य सैन्या बहवो विचरन्त्यमितौजसः
Many of his troops, mighty in energy, roam about, resembling rākṣasas and hairy piśācas.
