इति प्रतिसमादिष्टौ राक्षसौ शुकसारणौ। जयेति प्रतिनन्द्यैनं राघवं धर्मवत्सलम्
Thus instructed, the two rakshasas, Shuka and Sarana, responded to him, 'Victory!' and saluted Raghava, the upholder of righteousness.
आगम्य नगरीं लङ्कामब्रूतां राक्षसाधिपम्। विभीषणगृहीतौ तु वधार्थं राक्षसेश्वर
Having reached the city of Lanka, they spoke to the lord of the rakshasas, 'We were seized by Vibhishana for execution, O king of the rakshasas.'
दृष्ट्वा धर्मात्मना मुक्तौ रामेणामिततेजसा। एकस्थानगता यत्र चत्वारः पुरुषर्षभाः
But seeing that they were released by Rama, the righteous and immensely powerful, where the four foremost of men stood together—
लोकपालसमाः शूराः कृतास्त्रा दृढविक्रमाः। रामो दाशरथिः श्रीमाल्ँलक्ष्मणश्च विभीषणः
Heroes equal to the guardians of the worlds, skilled in weapons and firm in valor: Rama, son of Dasaratha, glorious Lakshmana, and Vibhishana.
सुग्रीवश्च महातेजा महेन्द्रसमविक्रमः। एते शक्ताः पुरीं लङ्कां सप्राकारां सतोरणाम्
And Sugriva, of great energy and prowess equal to Indra—these are capable of uprooting and crossing the city of Lanka with its ramparts and gateways.
उत्पाट्य संक्रामयितुं सर्वे तिष्ठन्तु वानराः। यादृशं तद्धि रामस्य रूपं प्रहरणानि च
Let all the vanaras stand ready to tear down and invade; such is the form of Rama and his weapons.
वधिष्यति पुरीं लङ्कामेकस्तिष्ठन्तु ते त्रयः। रामलक्ष्मणगुप्ता सा सुग्रीवेण च वाहिनी। बभूव दुर्धर्षतरा सर्वैरपि सुरासुरैः
He alone will destroy the city of Lanka; let the other three stand aside. Guarded by Rama and Lakshmana, and with Sugriva, their army became unconquerable even by all the gods and demons.
प्रहृष्टयोधा ध्वजिनी महात्मनां वनौकसां सम्प्रति योद्धुमिच्छताम्। अलं विरोधेन शमो विधीयतां प्रदीयतां दाशरथाय मैथिली
The army of the great-souled forest-dwellers, their warriors rejoicing and eager for battle—there is no use in enmity; let peace be made, and let Maithili be returned to the son of Dasaratha.

तद्वचः सत्यमक्लीबं सारणेनाभिभाषितम्। निशम्य रावणो राजा प्रत्यभाषत सारणम्
Hearing those true and manly words spoken by Sarana, King Ravana replied to him.
यदि मामभियुञ्जीरन् देवगन्धर्वदानवाः। नैव सीतामहं दद्यां सर्वलोकभयादपि
Even if the gods, gandharvas, and danavas were to attack me, I would not give Sita up, even out of fear for all the worlds.
त्वं तु सौम्य परित्रस्तो हरिभिः पीडितो भृशम्। प्रतिप्रदानमद्यैव सीतायाः साधु मन्यसे
But you, gentle one, are greatly distressed by the vanaras and now think it right to return Sita at once.
को हि नाम सपत्नो मां समरे जेतुमर्हति। इत्युक्त्वा परुषं वाक्यं रावणो राक्षसाधिपः
For who indeed could be my rival and conquer me in battle?' Thus speaking harsh words, Ravana, lord of the rakshasas—
आरुरोह ततः श्रीमान् प्रासादं हिमपाण्डुरम्। बहुतालसमुत्सेधं रावणोऽथ दिदृक्षया
Then the illustrious Ravana, desiring to see, ascended a palace white as snow, towering with many palm trees.
ताभ्यां चराभ्यां सहितो रावणः क्रोधमूर्च्छितः। पश्यमानः समुद्रं तं पर्वतांश्च वनानि च
Accompanied by those two spies, Ravana, overcome with anger, gazed upon the ocean, the mountains, and the forests.
ददर्श पृथिवीदेशं सुसम्पूर्णं प्लवंगमैः। तदपारमसह्यं च वानराणां महाबलम्
He saw the land filled with vanaras, and that immense, irresistible might of the monkeys.
आलोक्य रावणो राजा परिपप्रच्छ सारणम्। एषां के वानरा मुख्याः के शूराः के महाबलाः
Observing this, King Ravana questioned Sarana: 'Who among these vanaras are the chiefs, who are the heroes, and who are the mighty ones?'
के पूर्वमभिवर्तन्ते महोत्साहाः समन्ततः। केषां शृणोति सुग्रीवः के वा यूथपयूथपाः
Who are those who advance first, full of great enthusiasm on all sides? Whose voices does Sugriva hear, and who are the leaders of the leaders of troops?
सारणाचक्ष्व मे सर्वं किंप्रभावाः प्लवंगमाः। सारणो राक्षसेन्द्रस्य वचनं परिपृच्छतः
Tell me everything, Sāraṇa, about the power of the monkeys. Sāraṇa, being questioned by the king of the Rakshasas, spoke these words.
आबभाषेऽथ मुख्यज्ञो मुख्यांस्तत्र वनौकसः। एष योऽभिमुखो लङ्कां नर्दंस्तिष्ठति वानरः
Then the one who knew the foremost chiefs spoke about those leading dwellers of the forest: 'That monkey who stands facing Lanka, roaring, is a leader.'
यूथपानां सहस्राणां शतेन परिवारितः। यस्य घोषेण महता सप्राकारा सतोरणा
Surrounded by a hundred thousand leaders of troops, whose mighty roar echoes through the city with its ramparts and gates—
लङ्का प्रतिहता सर्वा सशैलवनकानना। सर्वशाखामृगेन्द्रस्य सुग्रीवस्य महात्मनः
Lanka, with its mountains, forests, and groves, is shaken entirely by the great sound of Sugriva, the noble king of all the monkeys.
बलाग्रे तिष्ठते वीरो नीलो नामैष यूथपः। बाहू प्रगृह्य यः पद्भ्यां महीं गच्छति वीर्यवान्
At the front of the army stands the heroic leader named Nila, who, grasping his arms, strides upon the earth with strength.
लङ्कामभिमुखः कोपादभीक्ष्णं च विजृम्भते। गिरिशृङ्गप्रतीकाशः पद्मकिंजल्कसंनिभः
Facing Lanka, he repeatedly expands himself in anger; resembling a mountain peak, and like the stalk of a lotus.
स्फोटयत्यतिसंरब्धो लाङ्गूलं च पुनः पुनः। यस्य लाङ्गूलशब्देन स्वनन्ति प्रदिशो दश
He fiercely lashes his tail again and again; by the sound of his tail, all ten directions resound.
एष वानरराजेन सुग्रीवेणाभिषेचितः। युवराजोऽङ्गदो नाम त्वामाह्वयति संयुगे
This is Angada, appointed as crown prince by Sugriva, king of the monkeys; he calls you to battle.
वालिनः सदृशः पुत्रः सुग्रीवस्य सदा प्रियः। राघवार्थे पराक्रान्तः शक्रार्थे वरुणो यथा
He is the son of Vali, always dear to Sugriva; for the sake of Rāghava, he is determined, just as Varuna is for Indra.
एतस्य सा मतिः सर्वा यद् दृष्टा जनकात्मजा। हनूमता वेगवता राघवस्य हितैषिणा
All his thoughts are fixed on what Hanuman, swift and devoted to Rāghava's welfare, saw regarding Janaka's daughter.
बहूनि वानरेन्द्राणामेष यूथानि वीर्यवान्। परिगृह्याभियाति त्वां स्वेनानीकेन मर्दितुम्
This powerful one leads many troops of monkey kings; he advances toward you with his own army to crush you.
अनुवालिसुतस्यापि बलेन महता वृतः। वीरस्तिष्ठति संग्रामे सेतुहेतुरयं नलः
Surrounded by the great strength of Angada's son, the hero Nala stands in battle; he is the builder of the bridge.
