अद्य युद्धेन महता समुद्रं परिशोषये। क्षमया हि समायुक्तं मामयं मकरालयः
Today, by a great battle, I will dry up the ocean; for this abode of makaras has taken my patience for weakness.
चापमानय सौमित्रे शरांश्चाशीविषोपमान्। समुद्रं शोषयिष्यामि पद्भ्यां यान्तु प्लवंगमाः
Bring me my bow, O gentle one, and arrows like venomous serpents; I will dry up the ocean—let the vanaras cross on foot.
अद्याक्षोभ्यमपि क्रुद्धः क्षोभयिष्यामि सागरम्। वेलासु कृतमर्यादं सहस्रोर्मिसमाकुलम्
Today, though the ocean is unshakable, in my wrath I will agitate it, with its boundaries marked by the shore and crowded with a thousand waves.
निर्मर्यादं करिष्यामि सायकैर्वरुणालयम्। महार्णवं क्षोभयिष्ये महादानवसंकुलम्
With my arrows I will destroy its limits and disturb the abode of Varuna, the great ocean teeming with mighty demons.
एवमुक्त्वा धनुष्पाणिः क्रोधविस्फारितेक्षणः। बभूव रामो दुर्धर्षो युगान्ताग्निरिव ज्वलन्
Having spoken thus, Rama, bow in hand and eyes blazing with anger, became unassailable, like the fire at the end of an age.
सम्पीड्य च धनुर्घोरं कम्पयित्वा शरैर्जगत्। मुमोच विशिखानुग्रान् वज्रानिव शतक्रतुः
He drew his terrible bow, shook the world with his arrows, and released fierce shafts like Indra hurling his thunderbolts.
ते ज्वलन्तो महावेगास्तेजसा सायकोत्तमाः। प्रविशन्ति समुद्रस्य जलं वित्रस्तपन्नगम्
Those blazing, swift, and powerful arrows entered the ocean's waters, terrifying the serpents within.
तोयवेगः समुद्रस्य समीनमकरो महान्। स बभूव महाघोरः समारुतरवस्तथा
The mighty ocean, filled with fish and makaras, surged violently, becoming dreadful, roaring with the sound of winds.
महोर्मिमालाविततः शङ्खशुक्तिसमावृतः। सधूमः परिवृत्तोर्मिः सहसासीन्महोदधिः
The great ocean, covered with rows of huge waves and conch shells, with smoky, swirling waters, suddenly became tumultuous.
व्यथिताः पन्नगाश्चासन् दीप्तास्या दीप्तलोचनाः। दानवाश्च महावीर्याः पातालतलवासिनः
The serpents, with blazing mouths and fiery eyes, were agitated, as were the mighty Daityas dwelling in the depths of the netherworld.
ऊर्मयः सिन्धुराजस्य सनक्रमकरास्तथा। विन्ध्यमन्दरसंकाशाः समुत्पेतुः सहस्रशः
The waves of the ocean king, bearing crests and resembling the Vindhya and Mandara mountains, surged up by the thousands.
आघूर्णिततरङ्गौघः सम्भ्रान्तोरगराक्षसः। उद्वर्तितमहाग्राहः सघोषो वरुणालयः
The abode of Varuṇa, with its multitude of churning waves, disturbed serpents and rākṣasas, and great crocodiles tossed about, resounded with noise.
ततस्तु तं राघवमुग्रवेगं प्रकर्षमाणं धनुरप्रमेयम्। सौमित्रिरुत्पत्य विनिःश्वसन्तं मामेति चोक्त्वा धनुराललम्बे
Then, Saumitri leapt up and, seeing Rāghava with his terrible speed drawing the unfathomable bow, clinging to the bow, said, 'Do not!' as Rāma exhaled forcefully.
एतद्विनापि ह्युदधेस्तवाद्य सम्पत्स्यते वीरतमस्य कार्यम्। भवद्विधाः क्रोधवशं न यान्ति दीर्घं भवान् पश्यतु साधुवृत्तम्
Even without this, O hero, your purpose concerning the ocean will be accomplished today; those like you do not fall under the sway of anger—let your noble conduct be seen for long.
अन्तर्हितैश्चापि तथान्तरिक्षे ब्रह्मर्षिभिश्चैव सुरर्षिभिश्च। शब्दः कृतः कष्टमिति ब्रुवद्भि- र्मामेति चोक्त्वा महता स्वरेण
And likewise, from the sky, the hidden Brahmarṣis and Surarṣis made a sound, saying 'Alas!' and, with great voices, called out, 'Do not!'

Hear now the twenty-second sarga in the glorious Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa, Yuddhakāṇḍa.
अथोवाच रघुश्रेष्ठः सागरं दारुणं वचः। अद्य त्वां शोषयिष्यामि सपातालं महार्णव
Then the best of the Raghus spoke harsh words to the ocean: 'Today I will dry you up, O great ocean, along with the netherworld.'
शरनिर्दग्धतोयस्य परिशुष्कस्य सागर। मया निहतसत्त्वस्य पांसुरुत्पद्यते महान्
When your waters are burned away by arrows and you are left parched, O ocean, a great cloud of dust will arise from your lifeless bed.
मत्कार्मुकविसृष्टेन शरवर्षेण सागर। परं तीरं गमिष्यन्ति पद्भिरेव प्लवंगमाः
By the shower of arrows released from my bow, the monkeys will cross to the far shore of the ocean simply on foot.
विचिन्वन्नाभिजानासि पौरुषं नापि विक्रमम्। दानवालय संतापं मत्तो नाम गमिष्यसि
You do not recognize my manliness or valor, searching in vain; you, abode of the Daityas, will soon experience torment from me.
ब्राह्मेणास्त्रेण संयोज्य ब्रह्मदण्डनिभं शरम्। संयोज्य धनुषि श्रेष्ठे विचकर्ष महाबलः
Fitting the Brahmāstra, a shaft resembling the rod of Brahmā, to his excellent bow, the mighty one drew it back.
तस्मिन् विकृष्टे सहसा राघवेण शरासने। रोदसी सम्पफालेव पर्वताश्च चकम्पिरे
As Rāghava suddenly drew the bow with the arrow, the heavens roared, and the mountains trembled.
तमश्च लोकमावव्रे दिशश्च न चकाशिरे। प्रतिचुक्षुभिरे चाशु सरांसि सरितस्तथा
Darkness covered the world, the quarters did not shine, and lakes and rivers were quickly agitated.
तिर्यक् च सह नक्षत्रैः संगतौ चन्द्रभास्करौ। भास्करांशुभिरादीप्तं तमसा च समावृतम्
The sun and moon, together with the stars, moved obliquely; the sky was ablaze with sunbeams and enveloped in darkness.
प्रचकाशे तदाऽऽकाशमुल्काशतविदीपितम्। अन्तरिक्षाच्च निर्घाता निर्जग्मुरतुलस्वनाः
Then the sky shone, illuminated by hundreds of meteors, and from the atmosphere thunderclaps of equal sound burst forth.
वपुःप्रकर्षेण ववुर्दिव्यमारुतपङ्क्तयः। बभञ्ज च तदा वृक्षाञ्जलदानुद्वहन्मुहुः
By the force of his radiance, divine gusts of wind blew, and repeatedly uprooted trees, carrying clouds.
आरुजंश्चैव शैलाग्रान् शिखराणि बभञ्ज च। दिवि च स्म महामेघाः संहताः समहास्वनाः
They tore up mountain peaks and broke summits, and in the sky, great clouds gathered, resounding with mighty thunder.
मुमुचुर्वैद्युतानग्नींस्ते महाशनयस्तदा। यानि भूतानि दृश्यानि चुक्रुशुश्चाशनेः समम्
Then those great devourers released lightning-like fire, and the visible beings wailed together with the thunder.
अदृश्यानि च भूतानि मुमुचुर्भैरवस्वनम्। शिश्यिरे चाभिभूतानि संत्रस्तान्युद्विजन्ति च
And the invisible beings uttered terrifying cries; those that were overcome grew cold, were terrified, and trembled.
सम्प्रविव्यथिरे चापि न च पस्पन्दिरे भयात्। सह भूतैः सतोयोर्मिः सनागः सहराक्षसः
They were greatly agitated and did not move out of fear, along with the beings, the waves with water, the serpents, and the rākṣasas.
