स हि तं प्रतिजग्राह भार्याहर्तारमागतम्। कपोतो वानरश्रेष्ठ किं पुनर्मद्विधो जनः
That pigeon received the one who had taken his wife, O best of monkeys; what then of a person like me?
ऋषेः कण्वस्य पुत्रोण कण्डुना परमर्षिणा। शृणु गाथा पुरा गीता धर्मिष्ठा सत्यवादिना
Hear the verses once sung by Kaṇḍu, the son of sage Kaṇva, a supreme seer, who was righteous and truthful.
बद्धाञ्जलिपुटं दीनं याचन्तं शरणागतम्। न हन्यादानृशंस्यार्थमपि शत्रुं परंतप
One should not kill, even for the sake of compassion, an enemy who has come seeking refuge, with hands joined and in distress, O scorcher of foes.
आर्तो वा यदि वा दृप्तः परेषां शरणं गतः। अरिः प्राणान् परित्यज्य रक्षितव्यः कृतात्मना
Whether afflicted or arrogant, if an enemy has sought refuge with others, a person of self-control must protect him, even at the cost of his own life.
स चेद् भयाद् वा मोहाद् वा कामाद् वापि न रक्षति। स्वया शक्त्या यथान्यायं तत् पापं लोकगर्हितम्
If, out of fear, confusion, or desire, one does not protect with his own power as is proper, that is a sin condemned by the world.
विनष्टः पश्यतस्तस्य रक्षिणः शरणं गतः। आनाय सुकृतं तस्य सर्वं गच्छेदरक्षितः
If one who has sought refuge perishes before the eyes of his protector, all the protector’s merit is lost if he fails to protect.
एवं दोषो महानत्र प्रपन्नानामरक्षणे। अस्वर्ग्यं चायशस्यं च बलवीर्यविनाशनम्
Thus, there is a great fault here in not protecting those who have surrendered: it leads to loss of heaven, loss of fame, and destruction of strength and valor.
करिष्यामि यथार्थं तु कण्डोर्वचनमुत्तमम्। धर्मिष्ठं च यशस्यं च स्वर्ग्यं स्यात् तु फलोदये
I will act according to the excellent words of Kaṇḍu, which are righteous, bring fame, and, in their result, lead to heaven.
सकृदेव प्रपन्नाय तवास्मीति च याचते। अभयं सर्वभूतेभ्यो ददाम्येतद् व्रतं मम
To one who has surrendered even once, saying 'I am yours,' I grant fearlessness from all beings; this is my vow.
आनयैनं हरिश्रेष्ठ दत्तमस्याभयं मया। विभीषणो वा सुग्रीव यदि वा रावणः स्वयम्
Bring him here, O best of monkeys; I have granted him fearlessness, whether it is Vibhīṣaṇa or even Rāvaṇa himself, O Sugrīva.
रामस्य तु वचः श्रुत्वा सुग्रीवः प्लवगेश्वरः। प्रत्यभाषत काकुत्स्थं सौहार्देनाभिपूरितः
Hearing Rāma’s words, Sugrīva, lord of the monkeys, replied to Kākutstha, filled with friendship.
किमत्र चित्रं धर्मज्ञ लोकनाथशिखामणे। यत् त्वमार्यं प्रभाषेथाः सत्त्ववान् सत्पथे स्थितः
What is remarkable in this, O knower of righteousness, crest-jewel among the lords of the world, that you, steadfast in virtue and established on the path of the good, should speak nobly?
मम चाप्यन्तरात्मायं शुद्धं वेत्ति विभीषणम्। अनुमानाच्च भावाच्च सर्वतः सुपरीक्षितः
My own inner self also knows Vibhishana to be pure; by inference and by his conduct, he has been thoroughly examined in every way.
तस्मात् क्षिप्रं सहास्माभिस्तुल्यो भवतु राघव। विभीषणो महाप्राज्ञः सखित्वं चाभ्युपैतु नः
Therefore, let Vibhishana, the great and wise one, swiftly become equal with us, O Raghava, and let him accept our friendship.
ततस्तु सुग्रीववचो निशम्य त- द्धरीश्वरेणाभिहितं नरेश्वरः। विभीषणेनाशु जगाम संगमं पतत्त्रिराजेन यथा पुरंदरः
Then, having heard Sugriva’s words spoken by the lord of the monkeys, the lord of men quickly went to meet Vibhishana, just as Indra, king of the gods, would go to meet the king of birds.

Listen now to the nineteenth sarga in the glorious Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa, Yuddha Kāṇḍa.
राघवेणाभये दत्ते संनतो रावणानुजः। विभीषणो महाप्राज्ञो भूमिं समवलोकयत्
When Raghava granted him safety, Vibhishana, Ravana’s younger brother and a man of great wisdom, bowed and looked upon the earth.
खात् पपातावनिं हृष्टो भक्तैरनुचरैः सह। स तु रामस्य धर्मात्मा निपपात विभीषणः
Joyful, he descended from the sky to the ground together with his devoted followers; that righteous Vibhishana bowed before Rama.
पादयोर्निपपाताथ चतुर्भिः सह राक्षसैः। अब्रवीच्च तदा वाक्यं रामं प्रति विभीषणः
He fell at Rama’s feet along with the four rakshasas, and then Vibhishana spoke these words to Rama.
धर्मयुक्तं च युक्तं च साम्प्रतं सम्प्रहर्षणम्। अनुजो रावणस्याहं तेन चास्म्यवमानितः
It is right and just that I am now filled with joy; I am Ravana’s younger brother, and because of that I have been dishonored.
भवन्तं सर्वभूतानां शरण्यं शरणं गतः। परित्यक्ता मया लङ्का मित्राणि च धनानि च
I have sought refuge in you, the protector of all beings; I have abandoned Lanka, my friends, and my wealth.
भवद्गतं हि मे राज्यं जीवितं च सुखानि च। तस्य तद् वचनं श्रुत्वा रामो वचनमब्रवीत्
My kingdom, my life, and my happiness are now dependent on you; having heard these words, Rama spoke as follows.
वचसा सान्त्वयित्वैनं लोचनाभ्यां पिबन्निव। आख्याहि मम तत्त्वेन राक्षसानां बलाबलम्
Comforting him with words and gazing at him intently, Rama said: 'Tell me truthfully the strengths and weaknesses of the rakshasas.'
एवमुक्तं तदा रक्षो रामेणाक्लिष्टकर्मणा। रावणस्य बलं सर्वमाख्यातुमुपचक्रमे
Thus addressed by Rama, whose actions are flawless, the rakshasa began to describe all of Ravana’s strength.
अवध्यः सर्वभूतानां गन्धर्वोरगपक्षिणाम्। राजपुत्र दशग्रीवो वरदानात् स्वयम्भुवः
O prince, by the boon of the Self-born, the ten-headed Ravana cannot be slain by any being, nor by gandharvas, serpents, or birds.
रावणानन्तरो भ्राता मम ज्येष्ठश्च वीर्यवान्। कुम्भकर्णो महातेजाः शक्रप्रतिबलो युधि
My elder brother, next after Ravana, is Kumbhakarna, mighty and radiant, equal to Indra in battle.
राम सेनापतिस्तस्य प्रहस्तो यदि ते श्रुतः। कैलासे येन समरे मणिभद्रः पराजितः
O Rama, his commander is Prahasta, if you have heard of him, who defeated Manibhadra in battle on Mount Kailasa.
बद्धगोधाङ्गुलित्राणस्त्ववध्यकवचो युधि। धनुरादाय यस्तिष्ठन्नदृश्यो भवतीन्द्रजित्
Wearing armor impenetrable in battle and gauntlets bound on his arms, Indrajit, invisible while standing with his bow, cannot be slain.
संग्रामे सुमहद्व्यूहे तर्पयित्वा हुताशनम्। अन्तर्धानगतः श्रीमानिन्द्रजिद्धन्ति राघव
In the great and vast battle, after offering oblations to the fire, the illustrious Indrajit, having become invisible, kills, O Raghava.
महोदरमहापार्श्वौ राक्षसश्चाप्यकम्पनः। अनीकपास्तु तस्यैते लोकपालसमा युधि
Mahodara and Mahaparsva, and also the rakshasa Akampana, these are his generals, equal to the guardians of the worlds in battle.
