Her face shines like the flame of a sacrificial fire, radiant like the sun; it is high, pure, charming, and adorned with lovely eyes.
Beholding her, I became helpless, overcome by desire; with wrath and joy mingled, my complexion was altered.
Constantly afflicted by grief and burning desire, I was corrupted; yet that radiant woman requested me for a year's time.
Awaiting her husband, Rāma, with wide eyes, that beautiful-eyed woman received from me a noble promise.
I am always exhausted by desire, like a horse on a long journey; how will the dwellers of the forest cross the unshakable ocean?
Filled with many creatures and fish, either those two sons of Daśaratha, or perhaps a single monkey, have caused us great slaughter.
The paths of action are hard to discern; let each speak according to his own understanding. There is no fear from humans, yet let us deliberate.
Once, in the battle between gods and demons, I conquered with you by my side; likewise, these monkeys led by Sugrīva are before me.
Having crossed to the far shore of the ocean, placing the princes at their head, they have reached the abode of Varuṇa, following Sītā's path.
Just as Sītā is not to be given, so the sons of Daśaratha are to be slain; let you all counsel together, and let the wise plan be spoken.
I see no one else in the world with the power to cross the ocean with monkeys; surely victory is mine.
Hearing the lament of him overcome by desire, Kumbhakarṇa grew angry and spoke these words.
When Sītā, along with Lakṣmaṇa, was forcibly brought here from Rāma, then, seeing her just once, the mind would surely be drawn to her, as the Yamunā flows to the Yamuna.
All this, O great king, has been accomplished by you in an unparalleled manner; let us also be engaged from the very beginning in this undertaking.
He, O Ten-headed one, who carries out royal duties justly, does not later regret, for his mind is fixed on what is certain, O king.
Actions performed without proper means, or those that are contrary, become corrupted, just as oblations are spoiled when offered improperly.
He who wishes to do what should be done later before what should be done first, and what should be done first later, does not know the right and wrong course.
When a fickle person undertakes actions without careful consideration of superior strength, others find a weakness, like birds entering the sky of the heron.
You have undertaken this great task without proper reflection; by good fortune, Rāma did not kill you, like poisoned meat spared.
Therefore, this unparalleled task begun by you against the enemy, I will complete, O faultless one, by slaying your foes.
I will destroy your enemies, O night-wanderer, even if they are Indra and Vivasvat, or Fire and Wind; I will fight even Kubera and Varuṇa.
Even Indra would be afraid of one whose body is like a mountain, who wields a great iron club, who roars, and whose fangs are sharp.
He will strike me again with a second arrow; then I will drink his blood as I desire, so be at ease.
By killing the son of Daśaratha, I will strive to bring you victory that brings happiness; having slain Rāma together with Lakṣmaṇa, I will devour all the chief leaders of the monkey army.
Enjoy yourself as you wish, drink the finest liquor, and carry out beneficial tasks without anxiety; when I have sent Rāma to the abode of Yama, Sītā will be under your control for a long time.
Listen to the thirteenth sarga. Thus ends the thirteenth sarga in the Yuddha Kāṇḍa of the glorious Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa.
Understanding that Rāvaṇa was enraged, the mighty Mahāpārśva, after reflecting for a moment, spoke with joined palms.
Indeed, any man who, having reached a forest inhabited by deer and beasts, does not drink the honey he finds, would be a fool.
Who is lord over you, the subduer of enemies? Enjoy yourself with Vaidehī, having subdued your foes and placed your foot upon their heads.
Act with force, O mighty one, like a cock among hens; seize Sītā again and again, enjoy her, and take your pleasure.
