Thousands of rakshasas, O lord of the night-walkers, who are valiant, terrifying, dreadful in appearance, and able to assume any form at will, are ready.
Let them all, assuming human form, approach Kakutstha and, without any confusion, address the best of the Raghu line.
Sent by Bharata, your younger brother, he will quickly come here, having mobilized the army.
Then, we, armed with spears, lances, maces, bows, arrows, and swords, will swiftly proceed there from here.
Standing in groups in the sky, we will destroy that monkey army with a great shower of stones and weapons, and send them to the abode of Yama.
If Rama and Lakshmana approach in this way, let them surely be deprived of life and meet their end.
Then the mighty hero Nikumbha, of Kumbhakarna's line, furious, spoke to Ravana, the terror of the worlds.
Let all of you remain here together with the great king; I alone will slay Raghava and Lakshmana.
Sugriva, along with Hanuman and all the monkeys here—then Vajrahanur by name, a rakshasa like a mountain—
Angry, licking his lips with his tongue, he spoke: 'Let the rest of you, free from anxiety, do as you please.'
I alone will devour that entire monkey army; let the rest of you be at ease, play, and drink honeyed liquor.
I alone will slay Sugriva, Lakshmana, Angada, Hanuman, and all the monkeys here.
Let the ninth sarga be heard in the glorious Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa, Yuddha Kāṇḍa, sarga nine.
Then Nikumbha, Rabhasa, Suryashatru of great might, Suptaghna, Yajnakopa, Mahaparsva, and Mahodara—
And Agniketu, the indomitable, Rashmiketu the rakshasa, and Indrajit, radiant and strong, Ravana's son—
Then Prahasta, Virūpākṣa, Vajradaṃṣṭra of great strength, Dhūmrākṣa, Atikāya, and also the demon Durmukha—
Seizing iron clubs, spears, lances, javelins, sharp axes, bows with fine arrows, and broad-bladed swords—
Having grasped their weapons, the demons, extremely enraged, sprang up and all addressed Rāvaṇa, blazing as if with energy:
"Today we will slay Rāma, Sugrīva, and Lakṣmaṇa, and the wretched Hanūmān, by whom Laṅkā was violated."
Vibhīṣaṇa, restraining all those who had taken up arms, spoke to them with joined palms, seating them again:
"O dear one, if a goal cannot be attained by the three means, then, say the wise, it is time for effort and valor."
"How do you wish to attack him, who is vigilant, eager for victory, established in strength, with anger subdued, and difficult to overcome?"
"Who in the world knows or can even imagine the speed of Hanūmān, who crossed the ocean, lord of terrifying rivers?"
"O night-wanderers, the powers and heroism of the enemy are immeasurable; never, under any circumstance, should they be underestimated."
"And what wrong did Rāma formerly do to the king of the demons, whose illustrious wife he took from Janasthāna?"
"If Khara, though of wicked conduct, was slain in battle by Rāma, still, every being must protect their life as best they can."
"Because of this, the fear for us regarding Vaidehī will be immense; she who was brought here should be abandoned—why cause conflict for her?"
"It is not fitting for a valiant and righteous man to pursue pointless enmity; let Sītā, the daughter of Janaka, be returned to him."
"Before he shatters this city, filled with elephants, horses, and abundant jewels, with his arrows, let Sītā be given to him."
"Before the vast, terrible, and invincible army of monkeys overruns Laṅkā, let Sītā be restored to him."
