तिष्ठ वा किं महाराज श्रमेण तव वानरान्। अयमेको महाबाहुरिन्द्रजित् क्षपयिष्यति
Either remain, O great king, or rest from your exertion; this one, mighty-armed Indrajit, alone will destroy the Vānaras.
अनेन च महाराज माहेश्वरमनुत्तमम्। इष्ट्वा यज्ञं वरो लब्धो लोके परमदुर्लभः
By him, O great king, having worshipped the supreme lord Maheśvara with a sacrifice, a boon was obtained, most difficult to attain in the world.
शक्तितोमरमीनं च विनिकीर्णान्त्रशैवलम्। गजकच्छपसम्बाधमश्वमण्डूकसंकुलम्
With his spear and javelin, he has made the battlefield like a sea scattered with entrails as seaweed, crowded with elephants and tortoises, filled with horses and frogs.
रुद्रादित्यमहाग्राहं मरुद्वसुमहोरगम्। रथाश्वगजतोयौघं पदातिपुलिनं महत्
He has made it a great ocean of Rudras, Ādityas, and mighty crocodiles, filled with Maruts, Vasus, and great serpents, with chariots, horses, elephants as waves, and foot soldiers as the vast shore.
अनेन हि समासाद्य देवानां बलसागरम्। गृहीतो दैवतपतिर्लङ्कां चापि प्रवेशितः
Indeed, by him, having reached the ocean of the gods' forces, the lord of the gods was captured and even brought into Laṅkā.
पितामहनियोगाच्च मुक्तः शम्बरवृत्रहा। गतस्त्रिविष्टपं राजन् सर्वदेवनमस्कृतः
Released by the command of the Grandfather, the slayer of Śambara and Vṛtra departed to heaven, honored by all the gods, O King.
तमेव त्वं महाराज विसृजेन्द्रजितं सुतम्। यावद् वानरसेनां तां सरामां नयति क्षयम्
Therefore, O great king, send forth your son Indrajit himself, until he brings destruction upon that Vānara army, together with Rāma.
राजन्नापदयुक्तेयमागता प्राकृताज्जनात्। हृदि नैव त्वया कार्या त्वं वधिष्यसि राघवम्
O King, this adversity has come from ordinary men; do not let it trouble your heart, for you will slay Rāghava.

Hear now the eighth sarga in the glorious Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa, Yuddha Kāṇḍa.
ततो नीलाम्बुदप्रख्यः प्रहस्तो नाम राक्षसः। अब्रवीत् प्राञ्जलिर्वाक्यं शूरः सेनापतिस्तदा
Then Prahasta, a Rākṣasa resembling a dark rain cloud, brave and commander of the army, spoke these words with joined palms.
देवदानवगन्धर्वाः पिशाचपतगोरगाः। सर्वे धर्षयितुं शक्याः किं पुनर्मानवौ रणे
The gods, Dānavas, Gandharvas, Piśācas, birds, and serpents—all can be overcome; what then of two men in battle?
सर्वे प्रमत्ता विश्वस्ता वञ्चिताः स्म हनूमता। नहि मे जीवतो गच्छेज्जीवन् स वनगोचरः
All, being careless and trusting, were deceived by Hanūmat; as long as I live, that forest-dweller shall not escape alive.
सर्वां सागरपर्यन्तां सशैलवनकाननाम्। करोम्यवानरां भूमिमाज्ञापयतु मां भवान्
I will make the entire earth, up to the ocean, with its mountains, forests, and groves, free of Vānaras—just command me.
रक्षां चैव विधास्यामि वानराद् रजनीचर। नागमिष्यति ते दुःखं किंचिदात्मापराधजम्
And I will arrange protection from the Vānaras, O night-wanderer; no suffering caused by your own fault will come to you.
अब्रवीत् तु सुसंक्रुद्धो दुर्मुखो नाम राक्षसः। इदं न क्षमणीयं हि सर्वेषां नः प्रधर्षणम्
Then, greatly enraged, a Rākṣasa named Durmukha spoke: 'This insult is not to be tolerated by any of us.'
अयं परिभवो भूयः पुरस्यान्तःपुरस्य च। श्रीमतो राक्षसेन्द्रस्य वानरेण प्रधर्षणम्
This is a further humiliation for the city and the inner palace—the insult to the illustrious king of the Rākṣasas by a Vānara.
ततोऽब्रवीत् सुसंक्रुद्धो वज्रदंष्ट्रो महाबलः। प्रगृह्य परिघं घोरं मांसशोणितरूषितम्
Then, greatly enraged, the mighty Vajradaṃṣṭra spoke, seizing a terrible iron club stained with flesh and blood.
किं नो हनूमता कार्यं कृपणेन तपस्विना। रामे तिष्ठति दुर्धर्षे सुग्रीवेऽपि सलक्ष्मणे
What need have we for Hanuman, that wretched ascetic, while the indomitable Rama stands, along with Sugriva and Lakshmana?
अद्य रामं ससुग्रीवं परिघेण सलक्ष्मणम्। आगमिष्यामि हत्वैको विक्षोभ्य हरिवाहिनीम्
Today, I alone will go forth with my iron club and, after striking down Rama, Sugriva, and Lakshmana, I will scatter the monkey army.
इदं ममापरं वाक्यं शृणु राजन् यदिच्छसि। उपायकुशलो ह्येव जयेच्छत्रूनतन्द्रितः
Hear this other counsel of mine, O King, if you wish: one skilled in strategy and untiring surely conquers his enemies.
कामरूपधराः शूराः सुभीमा भीमदर्शनाः। राक्षसा वा सहस्राणि राक्षसाधिप निश्चिताः
Thousands of rakshasas, O lord of the night-walkers, who are valiant, terrifying, dreadful in appearance, and able to assume any form at will, are ready.
काकुत्स्थमुपसंगम्य बिभ्रतो मानुषं वपुः। सर्वे ह्यसम्भ्रमा भूत्वा ब्रुवन्तु रघुसत्तमम्
Let them all, assuming human form, approach Kakutstha and, without any confusion, address the best of the Raghu line.
प्रेषिता भरतेनैव भ्रात्रा तव यवीयसा। स हि सेनां समुत्थाप्य क्षिप्रमेवोपयास्यति
Sent by Bharata, your younger brother, he will quickly come here, having mobilized the army.
ततो वयमितस्तूर्णं शूलशक्तिगदाधराः। चापबाणासिहस्ताश्च त्वरितास्तत्र यामहे
Then, we, armed with spears, lances, maces, bows, arrows, and swords, will swiftly proceed there from here.
आकाशे गणशः स्थित्वा हत्वा तां हरिवाहिनीम्। अश्मशस्त्रमहावृष्ट्या प्रापयाम यमक्षयम्
Standing in groups in the sky, we will destroy that monkey army with a great shower of stones and weapons, and send them to the abode of Yama.
एवं चेदुपसर्पेतामनयं रामलक्ष्मणौ। अवश्यमपनीतेन जहतामेव जीवितम्
If Rama and Lakshmana approach in this way, let them surely be deprived of life and meet their end.
कौम्भकर्णिस्ततो वीरो निकुम्भो नाम वीर्यवान्। अब्रवीत् परमक्रुद्धो रावणं लोकरावणम्
Then the mighty hero Nikumbha, of Kumbhakarna's line, furious, spoke to Ravana, the terror of the worlds.
सर्वे भवन्तस्तिष्ठन्तु महाराजेन संगताः। अहमेको हनिष्यामि राघवं सहलक्ष्मणम्
Let all of you remain here together with the great king; I alone will slay Raghava and Lakshmana.
सुग्रीवं सहनूमन्तं सर्वांश्चैवात्र वानरान्। ततो वज्रहनुर्नाम राक्षसः पर्वतोपमः
Sugriva, along with Hanuman and all the monkeys here—then Vajrahanur by name, a rakshasa like a mountain—
क्रुद्धः परिलिहन् सृक्कां जिह्वया वाक्यमब्रवीत्। स्वैरं कुर्वन्तु कार्याणि भवन्तो विगतज्वराः
Angry, licking his lips with his tongue, he spoke: 'Let the rest of you, free from anxiety, do as you please.'
