ददृशुस्ते महात्मानो वाताहतजलाशयम्। अनिलोद्धूतमाकाशे प्रवलान्तमिवोर्मिभिः
The great-souled ones saw the water mass struck by wind, tossed in the sky, shining with waves like coral.
ततो विस्मयमापन्ना हरयो ददृशुः स्थिताः। भ्रान्तोर्मिजालसंनादं प्रलोलमिव सागरम्
Then the monkeys, standing there, were struck with wonder, seeing the sea restless, its network of waves resounding and swirling.

सा तु नीलेन विधिवत्स्वारक्षा सुसमाहिता। सागरस्योत्तरे तीरे साधु सा विनिवेशिता
That army, properly protected by Nila according to the rules, was well stationed on the northern shore of the ocean.
मैन्दश्च द्विविदश्चोभौ तत्र वानरपुङ्गवौ। विचेरतुश्च तां सेनां रक्षार्थं सर्वतोदिशम्
Mainda and Dvivida, both foremost among monkeys, patrolled the army in all directions for its protection.
निविष्टायां तु सेनायां तीरे नदनदीपतेः। पार्श्वस्थं लक्ष्मणं दृष्ट्वा रामो वचनमब्रवीत्
When the army had settled on the bank of the lordly river, Rama, seeing Lakshmana at his side, spoke these words.
शोकश्च किल कालेन गच्छता ह्यपगच्छति। मम चापश्यतः कान्तामहन्यहनि वर्धते
It is said that grief fades with the passage of time, yet for me, as I behold my beloved, it grows day by day.
वाहि वात यतः कान्ता तां स्पृष्ट्वा मामपि स्पृश। त्वयि मे गात्रसंस्पर्शश्चन्द्रे दृष्टिसमागमः
O wind, since you touch my beloved, touch me also; in you is the contact of her body, and in the moon is the meeting of our gaze.
तन्मे दहति गात्राणि विषं पीतमिवाशये। हा नाथेति प्रिया सा मां ह्रियमाणा यदब्रवीत्
That burns my limbs, as if I had drunk poison; 'Alas, my protector!'—those words my dear one spoke as she was carried away.
तद्वियोगेन्धनवता तच्चिन्ताविमलार्चिषा। रात्रिंदिवं शरीरं मे दह्यते मदनाग्निना
With the fuel of separation and the pure flame of anxious thought, day and night my body is consumed by the fire of longing.
अवगाह्यार्णवं स्वप्स्ये सौमित्रे भवता विना। एवं च प्रज्वलन् कामो न मा सुप्तं जले दहेत्
I will plunge into the ocean and sleep, O Saumitri, without you; thus, even if desire blazes, it will not burn me as I sleep in the water.
बह्वेतत् कामयानस्य शक्यमेतेन जीवितुम्। यदहं सा च वामोरुरेकां धरणिमाश्रितौ
This is much for one who longs; yet one can live by it—when she and I, with slender thighs, rest together upon the earth.
केदारस्येवाकेदारः सोदकस्य निरूदकः। उपस्नेहेन जीवामि जीवन्तीं यच्छृणोमि ताम्
Like a field with water and one without, I live by her nearness; I survive by hearing that she lives.
कदा नु खलु सुश्रोणीं शतपत्रायतेक्षणाम्। विजित्य शत्रून् द्रक्ष्यामि सीतां स्फीतामिव श्रियम्
When, indeed, will I see Sita, of lovely hips and lotus-like eyes, after conquering my enemies, radiant as abundant fortune?
कदा सुचारुदन्तोष्ठं तस्याः पद्ममिवाननम्। ईषदुन्नाम्य पास्यामि रसायनमिवातुरः
When will I, raising her lotus-like face with charming teeth and lips, drink from it as a sick man drinks an elixir?
तौ तस्याः सहितौ पीनौ स्तनौ तालफलोपमौ। कदा न खलु सोत्कम्पौ श्लिष्यन्त्या मां भजिष्यतः
When will her two full breasts, like palm fruits, trembling as she embraces me, truly delight me?
सा नूनमसितापाङ्गी रक्षोमध्यगता सती। मन्नाथा नाथहीनेव त्रातारं नाधिगच्छति
Surely, she of dark eyes, surrounded by demons, deprived of her protector, finds no savior, as one abandoned seeks refuge.
कथं जनकराजस्य दुहिता मम च प्रिया। राक्षसीमध्यगा शेते स्नुषा दशरथस्य च
How does the daughter of King Janaka, my beloved, lying among demons, and the daughter-in-law of Dasharatha, sleep?
अविक्षोभ्याणि रक्षांसि सा विधूयोत्पतिष्यति। विधूय जलदान् नीलान् शशिलेखा शरत्स्विव
She will cast off the unshakable demons and rise, just as the moon's crescent emerges in autumn, dispelling dark clouds.
स्वभावतनुका नूनं शोकेनानशनेन च। भूयस्तनुतरा सीता देशकालविपर्ययात्
Surely, Sita, naturally slender, has grown even thinner from grief and fasting, due to the change of place and time.
कदा नु राक्षसेन्द्रस्य निधायोरसि सायकान्। शोकं प्रत्याहरिष्यामि शोकमुत्सृज्य मानसम्
When will I, indeed, return sorrow to the heart of the king of demons by placing arrows in his chest, and cast off the grief in my mind?
कदा नु खलु मे साध्वी सीतामरसुतोपमा। सोत्कण्ठा कण्ठमालम्ब्य मोक्ष्यत्यानन्दजं जलम्
When, indeed, will my virtuous Sita, like a daughter of the gods, in longing, embrace my neck and shed tears of joy?
कदा शोकमिमं घोरं मैथिलीविप्रयोगजम्। सहसा विप्रमोक्ष्यामि वासः शुक्लेतरं यथा
When will I suddenly be freed from this terrible grief born of separation from Maithili, as one changes from dark to white clothing?
एवं विलपतस्तस्य तत्र रामस्य धीमतः। दिनक्षयान्मन्दवपुर्भास्करोऽस्तमुपागमत्
As that wise Rama lamented there, the sun, with its faint form at day's end, went down to its setting.
आश्वासितो लक्ष्मणेन रामः संध्यामुपासत। स्मरन् कमलपत्राक्षीं सीतां शोकाकुलीकृतः
Consoled by Lakshmana, Rama performed the evening rites, his mind troubled as he remembered Sita, whose eyes are like lotus petals.

लङ्कायां तु कृतं कर्म घोरं दृष्ट्वा भयावहम्। राक्षसेन्द्रो हनुमता शक्रेणेव महात्मना। अब्रवीद् राक्षसान् सर्वान् ह्रिया किंचिदवाङ्मुखः
Having witnessed the dreadful and terrifying deed done in Lanka, the king of the rakshasas, subdued in spirit, spoke to all the rakshasas, his face lowered in shame, just as Indra would before the great-souled Hanuman.
धर्षिता च प्रविष्टा च लङ्का दुष्प्रसहा पुरी। तेन वानरमात्रेण दृष्टा सीता च जानकी
Lanka, the city difficult to conquer, has been violated and entered by that single monkey; Sita, daughter of Janaka, has been seen.
प्रासादो धर्षितश्चैत्यः प्रवरा राक्षसा हताः। आविला च पुरी लङ्का सर्वा हनुमता कृता
The palace and the temple have been violated, the foremost rakshasas slain, and the entire city of Lanka has been thrown into turmoil by Hanuman.
किं करिष्यामि भद्रं वः किं वो युक्तमनन्तरम्। उच्यतां नः समर्थं यत् कृतं च सुकृतं भवेत्
