यो वीर्यबलसम्पन्नो न समः स्याद्धनूमतः। भृत्यकार्यं हनुमता सुग्रीवस्य कृतं महत्। एवं विधाय स्वबलं सदृशं विक्रमस्य च
Whoever is endowed with strength and valor, yet is not equal to Hanumān, that great servant's deed for Sugrīva has been accomplished; thus, one should measure their own power and valor accordingly.
यो हि भृत्यो नियुक्तः सन् भर्त्रा कर्मणि दुष्करे। कुर्यात् तदनुरागेण तमाहुः पुरुषोत्तमम्
Indeed, a servant who, being assigned by his master to a difficult task, accomplishes it out of devotion is called the best among men.
यो नियुक्तः परं कार्यं न कुर्यान्नृपतेः प्रियम्। भृत्यो युक्तः समर्थश्च तमाहुर्मध्यमं नरम्
A servant who, though capable and appointed to an important task, does not do what pleases the king, is said to be a mediocre man.
नियुक्तो नृपतेः कार्यं न कुर्याद् यः समाहितः। भृत्यो युक्तः समर्थश्च तमाहुः पुरुषाधमम्
A servant who, though attentive and capable, does not perform the king's assigned task is called the lowest of men.
तन्नियोगे नियुक्तेन कृतं कृत्यं हनूमता। न चात्मा लघुतां नीतः सुग्रीवश्चापि तोषितः
In carrying out that command, Hanumān has accomplished the task; his own worth has not been diminished, and Sugrīva too is satisfied.
अहं च रघुवंशश्च लक्ष्मणश्च महाबलः। वैदेह्या दर्शनेनाद्य धर्मतः परिरक्षिताः
Now, I, the Raghu lineage, and mighty Lakṣmaṇa are all, by righteousness, protected through the sight of Vaidehī.
इदं तु मम दीनस्य मनो भूयः प्रकर्षति। यदिहास्य प्रियाख्यातुर्न कुर्मि सदृशं प्रियम्
Yet my heart, afflicted as it is, is further troubled that I have not done something equally pleasing for him who brought this joyful news.
एष सर्वस्वभूतस्तु परिष्वङ्गो हनूमतः। मया कालमिमं प्राप्य दत्तस्तस्य महात्मनः
This embrace of Hanumān, which is as valuable as everything to me, I have given to that great soul at this moment.
इत्युक्त्वा प्रीतिहृष्टाङ्गो रामस्तं परिषस्वजे। हनूमन्तं कृतात्मानं कृतकार्यमुपागतम्
Having spoken thus, Rāma, his body thrilled with joy, embraced Hanumān, who had accomplished his task and returned.
ध्यात्वा पुनरुवाचेदं वचनं रघुसत्तमः। हरीणामीश्वरस्यापि सुग्रीवस्योपशृण्वतः
Then, after reflecting, the best of the Raghus spoke these words, as Sugrīva, lord of the monkeys, listened.
सर्वथा सुकृतं तावत् सीतायाः परिमार्गणम्। सागरं तु समासाद्य पुनर्नष्टं मनो मम
In every way, the search for Sītā has been well done; but, upon reaching the ocean, my mind is again troubled.
कथं नाम समुद्रस्य दुष्पारस्य महाम्भसः। हरयो दक्षिणं पारं गमिष्यन्ति समागताः
How indeed will the assembled monkeys cross to the southern shore of the ocean, vast and difficult to traverse?
यद्यप्येष तु वृत्तान्तो वैदेह्या गदितो मम। समुद्रपारगमने हरीणां किमिवोत्तरम्
Even though I have heard the account concerning Vaidehī, what solution is there for the monkeys to cross the ocean?
इत्युक्त्वा शोकसम्भ्रान्तो रामः शत्रुनिबर्हणः। हनूमन्तं महाबाहुस्ततो ध्यानमुपागमत्
Having spoken thus, Rāma, destroyer of enemies, distressed and agitated by grief, then entered into contemplation upon Hanumān.

Hear now the second sarga in the glorious Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa, Yuddha Kāṇḍa.
तं तु शोकपरिद्यूनं रामं दशरथात्मजम्। उवाच वचनं श्रीमान् सुग्रीवः शोकनाशनम्
Then the illustrious Sugriva spoke words that dispel grief to Rama, son of Dasharatha, who was overwhelmed by sorrow.
संतापस्य च ते स्थानं नहि पश्यामि राघव। प्रवृत्तावुपलब्धायां ज्ञाते च निलये रिपोः
Raghava, I see no reason for your distress now that we have obtained information and know the enemy’s location.
मतिमान् शास्त्रवित् प्राज्ञः पण्डितश्चासि राघव। त्यजेमां प्राकृतां बुद्धिं कृतात्मेवार्थदूषिणीम्
You are intelligent, learned in the scriptures, wise, and a scholar, Raghava; abandon this ordinary, self-defeating mindset.
समुद्रं लङ्घयित्वा तु महानक्रसमाकुलम्। लङ्कामारोहयिष्यामो हनिष्यामश्च ते रिपुम्
We will cross the ocean, teeming with great crocodiles, ascend Lanka, and slay your enemy.
निरुत्साहस्य दीनस्य शोकपर्याकुलात्मनः। सर्वार्था व्यवसीदन्ति व्यसनं चाधिगच्छति
For one who is dispirited, dejected, and overwhelmed by grief, all undertakings fail and disaster follows.
इमे शूराः समर्थाश्च सर्वतो हरियूथपाः। त्वत्प्रियार्थं कृतोत्साहाः प्रवेष्टुमपि पावकम्। एषां हर्षेण जानामि तर्कश्चापि दृढो मम
These monkey chiefs are valiant and capable, eager to do whatever pleases you—even to enter fire; I know this from their joy and my firm conviction.
विक्रमेण समानेष्ये सीतां हत्वा यथा रिपुम्। रावणं पापकर्माणं तथा त्वं कर्तुमर्हसि
With valor I will bring Sita back by slaying your enemy, Ravana, who is wicked in deed; you too must act accordingly.
सेतुरत्र यथा बद्ध्येद् यथा पश्येम तां पुरीम्। तस्य राक्षसराजस्य तथा त्वं कुरु राघव
Just as a bridge should be built here so we may see that city, so too, Raghava, you must act against the king of the rakshasas.
दृष्ट्वा तां हि पुरीं लङ्कां त्रिकूटशिखरे स्थिताम्। हतं च रावणं युद्धे दर्शनादवधारय
Once you see that city of Lanka, standing atop Trikuta peak, and Ravana slain in battle, know that your goal is achieved.
अबद्ध्वा सागरे सेतुं घोरे च वरुणालये। लङ्कां न मर्दितुं शक्या सेन्द्रैरपि सुरासुरैः
Without building a bridge across the dreadful ocean, abode of Varuna, even the gods and demons with Indra cannot destroy Lanka.
सेतुबन्धः समुद्रे च यावल्लङ्कासमीपतः। सर्वं तीर्णं च मे सैन्यं जितमित्युपधारय। इमे हि समरे वीरा हरयः कामरूपिणः
When the bridge is built over the ocean up to Lanka, and my entire army has crossed and conquered, know that victory is ours; for these heroic monkeys can assume any form in battle.
तदलं विक्लवां बुद्धिं राजन् सर्वार्थनाशिनीम्। पुरुषस्य हि लोकेऽस्मिन् शोकः शौर्यापकर्षणः
Therefore, O king, enough of this wavering mind that destroys all aims; for in this world, grief saps a man’s courage.
यत् तु कार्यं मनुष्येण शौटीर्यमवलम्ब्यताम्। तदलंकरणायैव कर्तुर्भवति सत्वरम्
Whatever task a man must do, let him rely on courage; for only by such resolve does the doer swiftly accomplish his purpose.
अस्मिन् काले महाप्राज्ञ सत्त्वमातिष्ठ तेजसा। शूराणां हि मनुष्याणां त्वद्विधानां महात्मनाम्। विनष्टे वा प्रणष्टे वा शोकः सर्वार्थनाशनः
At this time, O greatly wise one, summon your strength and energy; for among valiant men like you, O great-souled one, grief at loss or destruction ruins all endeavors.
तत्त्वं बुद्धिमतां श्रेष्ठः सर्वशास्त्रार्थकोविदः। मद्विधैः सचिवैः सार्धमरिं जेतुं समर्हसि
You, foremost among the wise and knower of all the meanings of the scriptures, are fit to conquer the enemy together with counselors like me.
