गते हि त्वयि विक्रान्ते पुनरागमनाय वै। प्राणानामपि संदेहो मम स्यान्नात्र संशयः
But when you, valiant one, have gone for the sake of returning again, there will be doubt even about my life—of this there is no uncertainty.
तवादर्शनजः शोको भूयो मां परितापयेत्। दुखाद् दुःखपराभूतां दुर्गतां दुःखभागिनीम्
The sorrow born of your absence will again torment me, who am overwhelmed by suffering, fallen, and destined for misery.
अयं च वीर संदेहस्तिष्ठतीव ममाग्रतः। सुमहांस्त्वत्सहायेषु हर्यृक्षेषु हरीश्वर
And, hero, this great doubt stands before me regarding the mighty monkeys and bears who are your allies, O lord of monkeys.
कथं नु खलु दुष्पारं तरिष्यन्ति महोदधिम्। तानि हर्यृक्षसैन्यानि तौ वा नरवरात्मजौ
How indeed will those armies of monkeys and bears, or those two sons of the best of men, cross the vast and impassable ocean?
त्रयाणामेव भूतानां सागरस्यास्य लङ्घने। शक्तिः स्याद् वैनतेयस्य वायोर्वा तव चानघ
Among all beings, only Garuda, the wind, or you, O faultless one, might have the power to leap across this ocean.
तदस्मिन् कार्यनिर्योगे वीरैवं दुरतिक्रमे। किं पश्यसि समाधानं ब्रूहि कार्यविदां वर
Therefore, O hero, in this task which is so difficult to accomplish, what solution do you see? Speak, you who are best among those who know how to achieve objectives.
काममस्य त्वमेवैकः कार्यस्य परिसाधने। पर्याप्तः परवीरघ्न यशस्यस्ते बलोदयः
Indeed, you alone, O destroyer of enemies, are sufficient for the completion of this task; your fame and the rise of your strength are renowned.
बलैः समग्रैर्यदि मां हत्वा रावणमाहवे। विजयी स्वपुरीं रामो नयेत् तत् स्याद् यशस्करम्
If, with all his forces, Rama should slay Ravana in battle and return victorious to his own city, that would bring him glory.
यथाहं तस्य वीरस्य वनादुपधिना हृता। रक्षसा तद्भयादेव तथा नार्हति राघवः
Just as I, the wife of that hero, was deceitfully taken from the forest by a demon out of fear of him, so too should Rama not deserve such a fate.
बलैस्तु संकुलां कृत्वा लङ्कां परबलार्दनः। मां नयेद् यदि काकुत्स्थस्तत् तस्य सदृशं भवेत्
If Rāma, the destroyer of enemy hosts, fills Laṅkā with his armies and leads me away, that would be fitting for him.
तद् यथा तस्य विक्रान्तमनुरूपं महात्मनः। भवत्याहवशूरस्य तथा त्वमुपपादय
Therefore, as is proper for that great-souled, heroic warrior in battle, so you should act accordingly.
तदर्थोपहितं वाक्यं प्रश्रितं हेतुसंहितम्। निशम्याहं ततः शेषं वाक्यमुत्तरमब्रवम्
Hearing those respectful and well-reasoned words spoken for that purpose, I then spoke the following reply.
देवि हर्यृक्षसैन्यानामीश्वरः प्लवतां वरः। सुग्रीवः सत्त्वसम्पन्नस्त्वदर्थे कृतनिश्चयः
O Lady, Sugrīva, endowed with virtue and resolve for your sake, is the lord of the armies of monkeys and bears, and the foremost among those who leap.
तस्य विक्रमसम्पन्नाः सत्त्ववन्तो महाबलाः। मनःसंकल्पसदृशा निदेशे हरयः स्थिताः
His mighty, valorous monkeys, full of strength and resolve, stand ready to obey his command, swift as thought.
येषां नोपरि नाधस्तान्न तिर्यक् सज्जते गतिः। न च कर्मसु सीदन्ति महत्स्वमिततेजसः
Their movement is unhindered above, below, or across; and these great, immeasurably powerful ones do not falter in mighty deeds.
असकृत् तैर्महाभागैर्वानरैर्बलसंयुतैः। प्रदक्षिणीकृता भूमिर्वायुमार्गानुसारिभिः
Many times, these blessed and powerful monkeys, who follow the path of the wind, have circled the earth.
मद्विशिष्टाश्च तुल्याश्च सन्ति तत्र वनौकसः। मत्तः प्रत्यवरः कश्चिन्नास्ति सुग्रीवसंनिधौ
Among them are those superior or equal to me; in Sugrīva’s presence, there is none inferior to me.
अहं तावदिह प्राप्तः किं पुनस्ते महाबलाः। नहि प्रकृष्टाः प्रेष्यन्ते प्रेष्यन्ते हीतरे जनाः
I myself have come here; what then of those mighty ones? For the most distinguished are not sent—others are sent as messengers.
तदलं परितापेन देवि मन्युरपैतु ते। एकोत्पातेन ते लङ्कामेष्यन्ति हरियूथपाः
Therefore, enough of your sorrow, Lady; let your anger depart. With a single leap, the monkey chiefs will come to Laṅkā for you.
मम पृष्ठगतौ तौ च चन्द्रसूर्याविवोदितौ। त्वत्सकाशं महाभागे नृसिंहावागमिष्यतः
Those two lion-like men, Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa, shining like the moon and sun, will come to you, O noble lady, with me following behind.
अरिघ्नं सिंहसंकाशं क्षिप्रं द्रक्ष्यसि राघवम्। लक्ष्मणं च धनुष्मन्तं लङ्काद्वारमुपागतम्
You will soon see Rāghava, destroyer of foes, lion-like in form, and Lakṣmaṇa, armed with his bow, arrived at the gate of Laṅkā.
नखदंष्ट्रायुधान् वीरान् सिंहशार्दूलविक्रमान्। वानरान् वारणेन्द्राभान् क्षिप्रं द्रक्ष्यसि संगतान्
You will quickly see the heroic monkeys, armed with claws and fangs, with the prowess of lions and tigers, resembling lordly elephants, assembled together.
शैलाम्बुदनिकाशानां लङ्कामलयसानुषु। नर्दतां कपिमुख्यानां नचिराच्छ्रोष्यसे स्वनम्
Soon you will hear the roar of the foremost monkeys, like mountains and clouds, resounding on the peaks of Laṅkā and Malaya.
निवृत्तवनवासं च त्वया सार्धमरिंदमम्। अभिषिक्तमयोध्यायां क्षिप्रं द्रक्ष्यसि राघवम्
You will soon see Rāghava, the subduer of enemies, freed from forest exile, anointed in Ayodhyā, together with you.
ततो मया वाग्भिरदीनभाषिणी शिवाभिरिष्टाभिरभिप्रसादिता। उवाह शान्तिं मम मैथिलात्मजा तवातिशोकेन तथातिपीडिता
Then, by my words, gentle and auspicious, I consoled the daughter of Mithilā, who was so deeply afflicted by grief for you, and she found peace.

Let the meditation verses be heard. Let the first chapter be heard. In the glorious Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa, in the Yuddha Kāṇḍa, this is the first chapter.
कृतं हनूमता कार्यं सुमहद् भुवि दुर्लभम्। मनसापि यदन्येन न शक्यं धरणीतले
Hanumān has accomplished a great deed, rare in this world, which could not be done even in thought by anyone else on earth.
नहि तं परिपश्यामि यस्तरेत महोदधिम्। अन्यत्र गरुडाद् वायोरन्यत्र च हनूमतः
Indeed, I see no one who could cross this great ocean, except for Garuḍa, Vāyu, or Hanumān.
देवदानवयक्षाणां गन्धर्वोरगरक्षसाम्। अप्रधृष्यां पुरीं लङ्कां रावणेन सुरक्षिताम्
Lankā, the city well-guarded by Rāvaṇa, is unassailable by gods, demons, yakṣas, gandharvas, serpents, or rākṣasas.
प्रविष्टः सत्त्वमाश्रित्य जीवन् को नाम निष्क्रमेत्। को विशेत् सुदुराधर्षां राक्षसैश्च सुरक्षिताम्
Who, having entered that city relying on their own strength, could possibly come out alive? Who could enter that city, so difficult to assail and protected by rākṣasas?
