प्रीतिसंजननं तस्य प्रदातुं तत् त्वमर्हसि। साभिवीक्ष्य दिशः सर्वा वेण्युद्ग्रथनमुत्तमम्
You should give him something that will bring him joy. Then, looking in all directions, she untied her excellent braid.
मुक्त्वा वस्त्राद् ददौ मह्यं मणिमेतं महाबल। प्रतिगृह्य मणिं दोर्भ्यां तव हेतो रघुप्रिय
Removing this jewel from her garment, she gave it to me, the mighty one. Accepting the jewel with both hands for your sake, O beloved of the Raghus—
शिरसा सम्प्रणम्यैनामहमागमने त्वरे। गमने च कृतोत्साहमवेक्ष्य वरवर्णिनी
I bowed my head in reverence to her and hastened to depart. Seeing my eagerness to go, the radiant lady—
विवर्धमानं च हि मामुवाच जनकात्मजा। अश्रुपूर्णमुखी दीना बाष्पगद्गदभाषिणी
As I grew more eager, the daughter of Janaka spoke to me. Her face was filled with tears, her voice choked with sobs, she was overcome by sorrow.
ममोत्पतनसम्भ्रान्ता शोकवेगसमाहता। मामुवाच ततः सीता सभाग्योऽसि महाकपे
Disturbed by my impending departure and overwhelmed by the force of grief, Sītā then spoke to me: 'You are truly fortunate, O mighty monkey,'
यद् द्रक्ष्यसि महाबाहुं रामं कमललोचनम्। लक्ष्मणं च महाबाहुं देवरं मे यशस्विनम्
'That you will see the great-armed Rāma, lotus-eyed, and Lakṣmaṇa, my illustrious brother-in-law, both mighty-armed.'
सीतयाप्येवमुक्तोऽहमब्रुवं मैथिलीं तथा। पृष्ठमारोह मे देवि क्षिप्रं जनकनन्दनि
Thus addressed by Sītā, I spoke likewise to the daughter of Mithilā: 'Climb onto my back, O Devi, O daughter of Janaka, quickly!'
यावत्ते दर्शयाम्यद्य ससुग्रीवं सलक्ष्मणम्। राघवं च महाभागे भर्तारमसितेक्षणे
'Today I will show you Rāghava, along with Sugrīva and Lakṣmaṇa—your lord, O dark-eyed one, O most fortunate lady.'
साब्रवीन्मां ततो देवी नैष धर्मो महाकपे। यत्ते पृष्ठं सिषेवेऽहं स्ववशा हरिपुङ्गव
Then the lady replied to me: 'This is not proper, O great monkey, that I should ascend your back of my own will, O foremost of monkeys.'
पुरा च यदहं वीर स्पृष्टा गात्रेषु रक्षसा। तत्राहं किं करिष्यामि कालेनोपनिपीडिता
'Before, O hero, when I was touched on my limbs by the demon, what could I do, oppressed by fate?'
गच्छ त्वं कपिशार्दूल यत्र तौ नृपतेः सुतौ। इत्येवं सा समाभाष्य भूयः संदेष्टुमास्थिता
'Go, O tiger among monkeys, to where those two sons of the king are.' Thus, having spoken to me, she again prepared to give a message.
हनूमन् सिंहसंकाशौ तावुभौ रामलक्ष्मणौ। सुग्रीवं च सहामात्यं सर्वान् ब्रूया अनामयम्
Hanuman, you should convey my well-being to both Rama and Lakshmana, who are like lions, and also to Sugriva together with his ministers.
यथा च स महाबाहुर्मां तारयति राघवः। अस्माद्दुःखाम्बुसंरोधात् तत् त्वमाख्यातुमर्हसि
And you ought to tell how that mighty-armed descendant of Raghu can rescue me from this flood of sorrow and confinement.
इदं च तीव्रं मम शोकवेगं रक्षोभिरेभिः परिभर्त्सनं च। ब्रूयास्तु रामस्य गतः समीपं शिवश्च तेऽध्वास्तु हरिप्रवीर
When you reach Rama, tell him of the intense surge of my grief and the reproaches I endure from these demons; and may your journey be safe, O foremost of the monkeys.
एतत् तवार्या नृप संयता सा सीता वचः प्राह विषादपूर्वम्। एतच्च बुद्ध्वा गदितं यथा त्वं श्रद्धत्स्व सीतां कुशलां समग्राम्
O prince, this is the message that noble Sita, steadfast and full of sorrow, has spoken to you; and having understood all that she has said, trust that Sita remains entirely safe.

अथाहमुत्तरं देव्या पुनरुक्तः ससम्भ्रमम्। तव स्नेहान्नरव्याघ्र सौहार्दादनुमान्य च
Then, with agitation, I was again addressed by the lady, out of her affection and friendship for you, O tiger among men, and with your permission.
एवं बहुविधं वाच्यो रामो दाशरथिस्त्वया। यथा मां प्राप्नुयाच्छीघ्रं हत्वा रावणमाहवे
You must tell Rama, son of Dasharatha, in many ways, so that, after slaying Ravana in battle, he may quickly reach me.
यदि वा मन्यसे वीर वसैकाहमरिंदम। कस्मिंश्चित् संवृते देशे विश्रान्तः श्वो गमिष्यसि
Or, hero, if you think it proper, stay for one night in some hidden place; after resting, you may depart tomorrow.
मम चाप्यल्पभाग्यायाः सांनिध्यात् तव वानर। अस्य शोकविपाकस्य मुहूर्तं स्याद् विमोक्षणम्
For me, who am so unfortunate, the nearness of you, O monkey, would bring even a moment's release from the bitter fruit of this grief.
गते हि त्वयि विक्रान्ते पुनरागमनाय वै। प्राणानामपि संदेहो मम स्यान्नात्र संशयः
But when you, valiant one, have gone for the sake of returning again, there will be doubt even about my life—of this there is no uncertainty.
तवादर्शनजः शोको भूयो मां परितापयेत्। दुखाद् दुःखपराभूतां दुर्गतां दुःखभागिनीम्
The sorrow born of your absence will again torment me, who am overwhelmed by suffering, fallen, and destined for misery.
अयं च वीर संदेहस्तिष्ठतीव ममाग्रतः। सुमहांस्त्वत्सहायेषु हर्यृक्षेषु हरीश्वर
And, hero, this great doubt stands before me regarding the mighty monkeys and bears who are your allies, O lord of monkeys.
कथं नु खलु दुष्पारं तरिष्यन्ति महोदधिम्। तानि हर्यृक्षसैन्यानि तौ वा नरवरात्मजौ
How indeed will those armies of monkeys and bears, or those two sons of the best of men, cross the vast and impassable ocean?
त्रयाणामेव भूतानां सागरस्यास्य लङ्घने। शक्तिः स्याद् वैनतेयस्य वायोर्वा तव चानघ
Among all beings, only Garuda, the wind, or you, O faultless one, might have the power to leap across this ocean.
तदस्मिन् कार्यनिर्योगे वीरैवं दुरतिक्रमे। किं पश्यसि समाधानं ब्रूहि कार्यविदां वर
Therefore, O hero, in this task which is so difficult to accomplish, what solution do you see? Speak, you who are best among those who know how to achieve objectives.
काममस्य त्वमेवैकः कार्यस्य परिसाधने। पर्याप्तः परवीरघ्न यशस्यस्ते बलोदयः
Indeed, you alone, O destroyer of enemies, are sufficient for the completion of this task; your fame and the rise of your strength are renowned.
बलैः समग्रैर्यदि मां हत्वा रावणमाहवे। विजयी स्वपुरीं रामो नयेत् तत् स्याद् यशस्करम्
If, with all his forces, Rama should slay Ravana in battle and return victorious to his own city, that would bring him glory.
यथाहं तस्य वीरस्य वनादुपधिना हृता। रक्षसा तद्भयादेव तथा नार्हति राघवः
Just as I, the wife of that hero, was deceitfully taken from the forest by a demon out of fear of him, so too should Rama not deserve such a fate.
बलैस्तु संकुलां कृत्वा लङ्कां परबलार्दनः। मां नयेद् यदि काकुत्स्थस्तत् तस्य सदृशं भवेत्
If Rāma, the destroyer of enemy hosts, fills Laṅkā with his armies and leads me away, that would be fitting for him.
