ब्रह्मलोकं चरत्वेक इन्द्रलोकं तथापरः। दिव्यवायुरिति ख्यातस्तृतीयोऽपि महायशाः
'Let one move in Brahmā's world, another in Indra's world; the third, renowned as Divyavāyu, also of great fame.'
चत्वारस्तु सुरश्रेष्ठ दिशो वै तव शासनात्। संचरिष्यन्ति भद्रं ते कालेन हि ममात्मजाः
'And four, O best of gods, by your command, will roam the directions. May good fortune be yours; in time, these are my sons.'
त्वत्कृतेनैव नाम्ना वै मारुता इति विश्रुताः। तस्यास्तद् वचनं श्रुत्वा सहस्राक्षः पुरन्दरः
'By your deed, they will be known by the name Maruts. Hearing her words, the thousand-eyed Purandara—'
उवाच प्राञ्जलिर्वाक्यमतीदं बलसूदनः। सर्वमेतद् यथोक्तं ते भविष्यति न संशयः
The slayer of Bala, with joined palms, spoke these words: 'All this will happen just as you have said, without doubt.'
विचरिष्यन्ति भद्रं ते देवरूपास्तवात्मजाः। एवं तौ निश्चयं कृत्वा मातापुत्रौ तपोवने
'Your sons, divine in form, will roam as you wish. Thus, having made this agreement, mother and son in the forest of austerities—'
जग्मतुस्त्रिदिवं राम कृतार्थाविति नः श्रुतम्। एष देशः स काकुत्स्थ महेन्द्राध्युषितः पुरा
O Rāma, it is heard by us that, their purpose accomplished, they went to heaven. This is the place, O descendant of Kakutstha, once inhabited by Mahendra.
दितिं यत्र तपःसिद्धामेवं परिचचार सः। इक्ष्वाकोस्तु नरव्याघ्र पुत्रः परमधार्मिकः
Here, that one moved about, Diti, accomplished in austerity. And, O tiger among men, the son of Ikṣvāku, supremely righteous—
अलम्बुषायामुत्पन्नो विशाल इति विश्रुतः। तेन चासीदिह स्थाने विशालेति पुरी कृता
Born of Alambuṣā, was renowned as Viśāla; and by him, in this place, the city called Viśālā was founded.
विशालस्य सुतो राम हेमचन्द्रो महाबलः। सुचन्द्र इति विख्यातो हेमचन्द्रादनन्तरः
Viśāla's son was the mighty Hemacandra, and after Hemacandra, his famous son was Sucandra.
सुचन्द्रतनयो राम धूम्राश्व इति विश्रुतः। धूम्राश्वतनयश्चापि सृञ्जयः समपद्यत
O Rāma, the illustrious son of Sucandra was known as Dhūmrāśva; and Dhūmrāśva's son was Sṛñjaya.
सृञ्जयस्य सुतः श्रीमान् सहदेवः प्रतापवान्। कुशाश्वः सहदेवस्य पुत्रः परमधार्मिकः
Sṛñjaya's son was the glorious and mighty Sahadeva; and Sahadeva's son was Kuśāśva, supremely righteous.
कुशाश्वस्य महातेजाः सोमदत्तः प्रतापवान्। सोमदत्तस्य पुत्रस्तु काकुत्स्थ इति विश्रुतः
Kuśāśva's son was the great and powerful Somadatta; and Somadatta's son was renowned as Kākutstha.
तस्य पुत्रो महातेजाः सम्प्रत्येष पुरीमिमाम्। आवसत् परमप्रख्यः सुमतिर्नाम दुर्जयः
His son, of great brilliance, now dwells in this city; famed and unconquerable, his name is Sumati.
इक्ष्वाकोस्तु प्रसादेन सर्वे वैशालिका नृपाः। दीर्घायुषो महात्मानो वीर्यवन्तः सुधार्मिकाः
By the grace of Ikṣvāku, all the kings of Vaiśālī are long-lived, noble, valiant, and highly righteous.
इहाद्य रजनीमेकां सुखं स्वप्स्यामहे वयम्। श्वः प्रभाते नरश्रेष्ठ जनकं द्रष्टुमर्हसि
Here, tonight, we shall sleep comfortably for one night; tomorrow morning, O best of men, you should see Janaka.
सुमतिस्तु महातेजा विश्वामित्रमुपागतम्। श्रुत्वा नरवरश्रेष्ठः प्रत्यागच्छन्महायशाः
Sumati, of great splendor, having heard that Viśvāmitra had arrived, returned, O best of men, greatly renowned.
पूजां च परमां कृत्वा सोपाध्यायः सबान्धवः। प्राञ्जलिः कुशलं पृष्ट्वा विश्वामित्रमथाब्रवीत्
Having performed the highest honors, together with his teachers and relatives, with joined palms, after inquiring of his welfare, he spoke to Viśvāmitra.
धन्योऽस्म्यनुगृहीतोऽस्मि यस्य मे विषयं मुने। सम्प्राप्तो दर्शनं चैव नास्ति धन्यतरो मम
Blessed am I, and favored am I, O sage, whose land you have entered; having seen you, there is none more fortunate than I.

पृष्ट्वा तु कुशलं तत्र परस्परसमागमे। कथान्ते सुमतिर्वाक्यं व्याजहार महामुनिम्
After inquiring of each other's welfare upon meeting, at the end of their conversation, Sumati spoke these words to the great sage.
इमौ कुमारौ भद्रं ते देवतुल्यपराक्रमौ। गजसिंहगती वीरौ शार्दूलवृषभोपमौ
May you be blessed—who are these two youths, equal to the gods in valor, whose gait is like that of elephants and lions, heroic, resembling tigers and bulls?
पद्मपत्रविशालाक्षौ खड्गतूणिधनुर्धरौ। अश्विनाविव रूपेण समुपस्थितयौवनौ
With eyes wide as lotus petals, bearing swords, quivers, and bows, they stand in the fullness of youth, like the Aśvins in beauty.
यदृच्छयैव गां प्राप्तौ देवलोकादिवामरौ। कथं पद्भ्यामिह प्राप्तौ किमर्थं कस्य वा मुने
Arrived here by chance, like immortals from the world of the gods, how have they come here on foot, for what purpose, and whose are they, O sage?
भूषयन्ताविमं देशं चन्द्रसूर्याविवाम्बरम्। परस्परेण सदृशौ प्रमाणेङ्गितचेष्टितैः
Adorning this land like the moon and sun adorn the sky, they are alike in stature, bearing, and movement.
किमर्थं च नरश्रेष्ठौ सम्प्राप्तौ दुर्गमे पथि। वरायुधधरौ वीरौ श्रोतुमिच्छामि तत्त्वतः
For what reason have these best of men come upon this difficult path, bearing excellent weapons? I wish to hear the truth.
तस्य तद् वचनं श्रुत्वा यथावृत्तं न्यवेदयत्। सिद्धाश्रमनिवासं च राक्षसानां वधं यथा। विश्वामित्रवचः श्रुत्वा राजा परमविस्मितः
Hearing these words, he related all that had occurred: their stay at Siddhāśrama, and the slaying of the Rākṣasas, as Viśvāmitra spoke; and the king was greatly astonished on hearing Viśvāmitra's words.
अतिथी परमं प्राप्तौ पुत्रौ दशरथस्य तौ। पूजयामास विधिवत् सत्कारार्हौ महाबलौ
He received as honored guests those two sons of Daśaratha, worthy of respect and mighty, and honored them according to custom.
ततः परमसत्कारं सुमतेः प्राप्य राघवौ। उष्य तत्र निशामेकां जग्मतुर्मिथिलां ततः
Then, having received the highest hospitality from the noble-minded one, the two Raghavas, after spending one night there, proceeded towards Mithilā.
तां दृष्ट्वा मुनयः सर्वे जनकस्य पुरीं शुभाम्। साधु साध्विति शंसन्तो मिथिलां समपूजयन्
Seeing that auspicious city of Janaka, all the sages praised Mithilā, saying 'Excellent, excellent!' and honored her greatly.
मिथिलोपवने तत्र आश्रमं दृश्य राघवः। पुराणं निर्जनं रम्यं पप्रच्छ मुनिपुङ्गवम्
There, in the grove near Mithilā, Rāghava saw an ancient, deserted, and charming hermitage, and questioned the foremost of sages.
