Lying on the ground, her body pale, like a lotus at the onset of winter, deprived of hope from Rāvaṇa, she has resolved upon death.
O descendant of Kakutstha, I somehow found the queen, her mind fixed on you; gently, I spoke of the illustrious Ikṣvāku lineage, O sinless one.
Then, O tiger among men, I gradually won her trust; after that, the queen spoke with me and revealed everything.
Hearing of the alliance between Rāma and Sugrīva, she was filled with joy; her conduct is always pure, and her devotion to you is unwavering.
Thus, O greatly fortunate one, I saw Janaka’s daughter, endowed with severe austerity and devotion to you, O best of men.
She gave me a token of recognition, as it happened before you, O wise one, at Citrakūṭa, concerning the crow, O Rāghava.
Jānakī told me, 'O son of Vāyu, you must fully inform Rāma again of all that you have seen.'
And she said, 'This must be given to him, carefully guarded;' thus she spoke these words in the presence of Sugrīva.
This radiant crest-jewel, which I have carefully protected for you, she said, 'Remember the mark of red mineral on the forehead.'
This splendid water-born jewel I have brought to you; seeing this, I will rejoice, O sinless one, as if seeing you in adversity.
'I will preserve my life for one month, O son of Daśaratha; after a month, fallen into the power of the rākṣasas, I will not live.'
Thus Sītā, thin-limbed, devoted to righteousness, imprisoned in Rāvaṇa’s inner chambers, her eyes wide like a frightened doe, spoke to me.
O Rāghava, I have told you everything exactly as it was; by all means, arrange for the crossing of the ocean’s waters.
Having learned the token, the two princes regained hope; the son of Vāyu fully related to Rāghava all that the queen had told him, in proper order, with complete words.
Hear now the sixty-sixth sarga in the glorious Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa, Sundarakāṇḍa.
Thus addressed by Hanumān, Rāma, son of Daśaratha, placed the jewel on his heart and wept together with Lakṣmaṇa.
Seeing that peerless jewel, Rāghava, consumed by grief, his eyes filled with tears, spoke these words to Sugrīva.
Just as a cow, out of affection, gives milk to her calf, so too does my heart overflow at the sight of this precious jewel.
This jewel was given to Vaidehi by my father-in-law; it was fastened upon her at the time of marriage and shines splendidly on her head.
This jewel, born from water, is highly revered; it was bestowed by the wise Indra, who was supremely pleased during a sacrifice.
Upon seeing this excellent jewel, it is as if I have seen my father; today, gentle one, I feel I have also seen Vaideha and the lord.
This jewel shines upon the head of my beloved; today, by seeing it, I imagine that I have attained her.
Tell me again and again, gentle one, what Sītā, the princess of Videha, said—her words pouring forth like water sprinkled over a blade.
What could be more painful than this, O Saumitri, that I see this water-born jewel without Vaidehi having returned?
If Vaidehi lives long enough to endure a month, she will survive; but, O hero, I could not live even a moment without her dark-eyed presence.
Take me also to the place where my beloved was seen; I could not remain even for a moment, now that I have learned of her whereabouts.
How does she, my slender-waisted and timid wife, remain among the terrifying and dreadful rākṣasas?
Just as the autumn moon, emerging from darkness, is veiled by clouds, so too does her face not shine at this time.
Tell me truly, Hanuman, what Sītā said; by this, I shall live, as an ailing person lives by medicine.
What did my radiant beloved, sweet in speech, say, Hanuman? Tell me, how does Janaki, deprived of me and enduring greater sorrow, continue to live?
