Having spoken thus to the forest-guards, the mighty Dadhimukha swiftly departed, accompanied by the forest-guards.
In the span of a moment, that wise son of the thousand-rayed one reached the forest-dwelling where Sugriva, the vanara, was.
Seeing Rama, Lakshmana, and Sugriva himself, he descended from the sky to the earth, which stands equally firm.
Having landed, that great hero, Dadhimukha, lord of the forest-guards, surrounded by all those guards, stood there.
With a sorrowful face, hands joined in reverence, he quickly pressed Sugriva's feet with his head.
Let the sixty-third sarga be heard in the glorious Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa, in the Sundara Kāṇḍa.
Then, seeing the vanara fallen at his feet, the foremost of vanaras, with a troubled heart, spoke these words.
'Rise, rise! Why have you fallen at my feet? I grant you safety—speak the truth and say what has happened.'
'Tell me, without confusion, everything that has happened, whatever you ought to say. Is all well in the Madhuvana? I wish to hear, O vanara.'
Thus reassured by the great-souled Sugrīva, the wise Dadhimukha rose and spoke these words.
O King, neither by the dust of the trees, nor by you, nor by Vāli, was the grove ever before destroyed; it has now been laid waste by the monkeys.
I tried to restrain them all, along with these forest-dwellers, but, disregarding me, they joyfully ate and drank.
Even when the forest-guards forbade them from such violence, O lord, the forest-dwellers ignored me as well and continued to eat.
Some throw away what remains here, and others eat as they please; when restrained, they all scowl in anger.
Those who were most enraged then assaulted the guards, and the furious leaders of the monkeys drove them out of the forest.
Then, by those many heroic monkeys, the foremost of monkeys, whose eyes were red with anger, the guards were violently attacked.
Some were struck with fists, some were hit with knees; some were dragged about at will, and the path to the gods was shown to them.
Thus, while you, the lord, remain, these brave ones have been slain, and the entire Madhuvana is being thoroughly consumed by them.
While Dadhimukha was thus informing Sugrīva, the foremost of monkeys, the wise Lakṣmaṇa, destroyer of enemy heroes, questioned him.
O King, for what reason has this monkey, the forest-guard, come here? And why, being distressed, did he speak these words?
Thus addressed by the great-souled Lakṣmaṇa, Sugrīva, skilled in speech, replied to Lakṣmaṇa with these words:
Noble Lakṣmaṇa, the heroic monkey Dadhimukha has reported that the honey in the grove has been consumed by the monkeys led by Aṅgada.
Such transgression would not occur among those who have not accomplished their task; since they have entered the grove, their mission is surely fulfilled.
The guards who tried to stop them were struck with knees, and this powerful monkey Dadhimukha was likewise disregarded.
This one was appointed by us as the guardian of my grove; the goddess has been seen, there is no doubt, and by none other than Hanumān.
For there is no other reason for Hanumān's action; success in the task rests with Hanumān, as does wisdom among the foremost of monkeys.
Determination, strength, and established fame are present where Jāmbavān is leader and mighty Aṅgada is present.
Hanuman himself was the overseer there; otherwise, there was no other way. Madhuvana was indeed destroyed by the heroes led by Angada.
Having searched the southern quarter and arrived, those foremost among monkeys, upon their return, made that Madhuvana—once inviolable—destroyed.
The entire grove was violated and enjoyed by the monkeys; the forest guards were struck down then, beaten on their knees.
