नहि वः प्लवने कश्चिन्नापि कश्चित् पराक्रमे। तुल्यः सामरदैत्येषु लोकेषु हरिसत्तमाः
For, O best of vanaras, in leaping or in valor, none among gods or demons in the worlds is your equal.
जित्वा लङ्कां सरक्षौघां हत्वा तं रावणं रणे। सीतामादाय गच्छामः सिद्धार्था हृष्टमानसाः
Having conquered Lanka with all its hosts and slain Rāvaṇa in battle, let us take Sītā and go, our purpose accomplished and hearts rejoicing.
तेष्वेवं हतवीरेषु राक्षसेषु हनूमता। किमन्यदत्र कर्तव्यं गृहीत्वा याम जानकीम्
When the rākṣasas have been slain by Hanumān, what else remains to be done here? Let us take Jānakī and depart.
रामलक्ष्मणयोर्मध्ये न्यस्याम जनकात्मजाम्। किं व्यलीकैस्तु तान् सर्वान् वानरान् वानरर्षभान्
Let us place the daughter of Janaka between Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa; what need is there for all these vanaras, or the best among vanaras, to act wrongly?
वयमेव हि गत्वा तान् हत्वा राक्षसपुङ्गवान्। राघवं द्रष्टुमर्हामः सुग्रीवं सहलक्ष्मणम्
Indeed, let us go ourselves, slay those foremost rākṣasas, and be worthy to see Rāghava, Sugrīva, and Lakṣmaṇa.
तमेवं कृतसंकल्पं जाम्बवान् हरिसत्तमः। उवाच परमप्रीतो वाक्यमर्थवदर्थवित्
Then Jāmbavān, the best of vanaras, greatly pleased and wise in meaning, spoke meaningful words to him, who had made such a resolve.
नैषा बुद्धिर्महाबुद्धे यद् ब्रवीषि महाकपे। विचेतुं वयमाज्ञप्ता दक्षिणां दिशमुत्तमाम्
O great-minded one, what you say is not our intention; we have been commanded to search the southern direction.
नानेतुं कपिराजेन नैव रामेण धीमता। कथंचिन्निर्जितां सीतामस्माभिर्नाभिरोचयेत्
Sītā, once won, would not please us if she were brought back by the monkey king or even by wise Rāma through any means.
राघवो नृपशार्दूलः कुलं व्यपदिशन् स्वकम्। प्रतिज्ञाय स्वयं राजा सीताविजयमग्रतः
Rāghava, the tiger among kings, proclaiming his own lineage, has himself vowed to win back Sītā before all.
सर्वेषां कपिमुख्यानां कथं मिथ्या करिष्यति। विफलं कर्म च कृतं भवेत् तुष्टिर्न तस्य च
How could the leader of all the monkeys act falsely before them? The deed would be fruitless, and he would find no satisfaction.
वृथा च दर्शितं वीर्यं भवेद् वानरपुङ्गवाः। तस्माद् गच्छाम वै सर्वे यत्र रामः सलक्ष्मणः। सुग्रीवश्च महातेजाः कार्यस्यास्य निवेदने
The valor shown by the foremost monkeys would be in vain; therefore, let us all go to where Rāma is, with Lakṣmaṇa and the mighty Sugrīva, to report this task.
न तावदेषा मतिरक्षमा नो यथा भवान् पश्यति राजपुत्र। यथा तु रामस्य मतिर्निविष्टा तथा भवान् पश्यतु कार्यसिद्धिम्
This opinion of ours is not so firm as you, prince, perceive; rather, as Rāma's mind is set, so should you consider the accomplishment of the task.

Hear now the sixty-first chapter in the glorious Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa, in the Sundara Kāṇḍa.
ततो जाम्बवतो वाक्यमगृह्णन्त वनौकसः। अङ्गदप्रमुखा वीरा हनूमांश्च महाकपिः
Then the forest-dwellers, led by Aṅgada and the mighty Hanūmān, accepted the words of Jāmbavat.
मेरुमन्दरसंकाशा मत्ता इव महागजाः। छादयन्त इवाकाशं महाकाया महाबलाः
Resembling Meru and Mandara, like intoxicated great elephants, those of vast bodies and great strength seemed to cover the sky.
सभाज्यमानं भूतैस्तमात्मवन्तं महाबलम्। हनूमन्तं महावेगं वहन्त इव दृष्टिभिः
All beings honored Hanūmān, the self-possessed and mighty one, as if carrying him with their eyes, he of great speed.
राघवे चार्थनिर्वृत्तिं कर्तुं च परमं यशः। समाधाय समृद्धार्थाः कर्मसिद्धिभिरुन्नताः
Having resolved to bring about Rāghava's purpose and supreme glory, they, their aim fulfilled, were exalted by the success of their mission.
प्रियाख्यानोन्मुखाः सर्वे सर्वे युद्धाभिनन्दिनः। सर्वे रामप्रतीकारे निश्चितार्था मनस्विनः
All were eager to announce the good news, all delighted at the prospect of battle, all determined in mind to aid Rāma in his cause.
प्लवमानाः खमाप्लुत्य ततस्ते काननौकसः। नन्दनोपममासेदुर्वनं द्रुमशतायुतम्
Leaping into the sky, those forest-dwellers, flying through the air, reached a grove like Nandana, filled with hundreds of thousands of trees.
यत् तन्मधुवनं नाम सुग्रीवस्याभिरक्षितम्। अधृष्यं सर्वभूतानां सर्वभूतमनोहरम्
That was the grove called Madhuvana, well-guarded by Sugrīva, inviolable to all beings and delightful to every creature.
यद् रक्षति महावीरः सदा दधिमुखः कपिः। मातुलः कपिमुख्यस्य सुग्रीवस्य महात्मनः
There, the great hero Dadhimukha, a monkey and maternal uncle of the noble Sugrīva, always guarded it.
ते तद् वनमुपागम्य बभूवुः परमोत्कटाः। वानरा वानरेन्द्रस्य मनःकान्तं महावनम्
Having reached that forest, the monkeys became exceedingly excited, for it was the great grove dear to the monkey king.
ततस्ते वानरा हृष्टा दृष्ट्वा मधुवनं महत्। कुमारमभ्ययाचन्त मधूनि मधुपिङ्गलाः
Seeing the great Madhuvana, the honey-colored monkeys, filled with joy, approached the prince to request honey.
ततः कुमारस्तान् वृद्धाञ्जाम्बवत्प्रमुखान् कपीन्। अनुमान्य ददौ तेषां निसर्गं मधुभक्षणे
Then the prince, having considered the elders led by Jāmbavat, granted them permission to freely partake of the honey.
ते निसृष्टाः कुमारेण धीमता वालिसूनुना। हरयः समपद्यन्त द्रुमान् मधुकराकुलान्
Thus permitted by the wise prince, Vāli's son, the monkeys rushed to the trees swarming with bees.
भक्षयन्तः सुगन्धीनि मूलानि च फलानि च। जग्मुः प्रहर्षं ते सर्वे बभूवुश्च मदोत्कटाः
Eating fragrant roots and fruits, all of them became joyful and grew intensely intoxicated.
ततश्चानुमताः सर्वे सुसंहृष्टा वनौकसः। मुदिताश्च ततस्ते च प्रनृत्यन्ति ततस्ततः
Then, with permission, all the forest-dwellers, delighted and cheerful, began to dance again and again.
गायन्ति केचित् प्रहसन्ति केचि- न्नृत्यन्ति केचित् प्रणमन्ति केचित्। पतन्ति केचित् प्रचरन्ति केचित् प्लवन्ति केचित् प्रलपन्ति केचित्
Some sing, some laugh, some dance, some bow; some fall, some wander, some leap, some babble.
परस्परं केचिदुपाश्रयन्ति परस्परं केचिदतिब्रुवन्ति। द्रुमाद् द्रुमं केचिदभिद्रवन्ति क्षितौ नगाग्रान्निपतन्ति केचित्
Some lean upon each other, some speak excessively to one another; some rush from tree to tree, some fall from treetops to the ground.
महीतलात् केचिदुदीर्णवेगा महाद्रुमाग्राण्यभिसम्पतन्ति। गायन्तमन्यः प्रहसन्नुपैति हसन्तमन्यः प्ररुदन्नुपैति
Some, with great speed, leap from the earth onto tall treetops; another approaches singing and laughing, another comes laughing and weeping.
