राक्षसीभिः परिवृता शोकसंतापकर्शिता। मेघरेखापरिवृता चन्द्ररेखेव निष्प्रभा
Surrounded by Rākṣasī women, worn down by grief and suffering, she was like a faded moon-crest veiled by clouds.
अचिन्तयन्ती वैदेही रावणं बलदर्पितम्। पतिव्रता च सुश्रोणी अवष्टब्धा च जानकी
Vaidehī, not thinking of Rāvaṇa, proud in his strength, remained devoted to her husband, beautiful-hipped Jānakī, steadfast in her vow.
अनुरक्ता हि वैदेही रामे सर्वात्मना शुभा। अनन्यचित्ता रामेण पौलोमीव पुरन्दरे
Indeed, the auspicious Vaidehī is wholly devoted to Rāma, her mind fixed on none but him, as Paulomī is to Indra.
तदेकवासःसंवीता रजोध्वस्ता तथैव च। सा मया राक्षसीमध्ये तर्ज्यमाना मुहुर्मुहुः
Clad in a single garment, covered in dust, she was repeatedly threatened by the Rākṣasī women as I saw her among them.
राक्षसीभिर्विरूपाभिर्दृष्टा हि प्रमदावने। एकवेणीधरा दीना भर्तृचिन्तापरायणा
I saw her in the pleasure grove, surrounded by hideous Rākṣasīs, wearing her hair in a single braid, dejected, her mind absorbed in thoughts of her husband.
अधःशय्या विवर्णाङ्गी पद्मिनीव हिमोदये। रावणाद् विनिवृत्तार्था मर्तव्यकृतनिश्चया
Lying on the ground, her body discolored, like a lotus at the onset of frost, she had turned away from Rāvaṇa's advances, resolved to die.
कथंचिन्मृगशावाक्षी विश्वासमुपपादिता। ततः सम्भाषिता चैव सर्वमर्थं प्रकाशिता
Somehow, the doe-eyed one was made to trust me; then she spoke, and revealed everything to me.
रामसुग्रीवसख्यं च श्रुत्वा प्रीतिमुपागता। नियतः समुदाचारो भक्तिर्भर्तरि चोत्तमा
Hearing of the friendship between Rāma and Sugrīva, she was gladdened; her conduct is always proper, and her devotion to her husband is supreme.
यन्न हन्ति दशग्रीवं स महात्मा दशाननः। निमित्तमात्रं रामस्तु वधे तस्य भविष्यति
That great-souled Rāma does not slay the ten-headed one only because of circumstance; Rāma will be the sole cause of his death.
सा प्रकृत्यैव तन्वङ्गी तद्वियोगाच्च कर्शिता। प्रतिपत्पाठशीलस्य विद्येव तनुतां गता
She, slender by nature, has grown even more emaciated from separation, like learning itself, practiced from the beginning, that has become thin.
एवमास्ते महाभागा सीता शोकपरायणा। यदत्र प्रतिकर्तव्यं तत् सर्वमुपकल्प्यताम्
Thus sits the noble Sītā, wholly devoted to sorrow; whatever must be done here, let all that be arranged.

Let the sixtieth chapter be heard in the glorious Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa, in the Sundara Kāṇḍa.
तस्य तद् वचनं श्रुत्वा वालिसूनुरभाषत। अश्विपुत्रौ महावेगौ बलवन्तौ प्लवंगमौ
Hearing those words, Vāli's son spoke: 'The two sons of Aśvin, swift and mighty, are vanaras of great strength.'
पितामहवरोत्सेकात् परमं दर्पमास्थितौ। अश्विनोर्माननार्थं हि सर्वलोकपितामहः
Because of the boon from the Grandfather, they have assumed supreme pride; for the honor of the Aśvins, the Grandfather of all worlds granted them this.
सर्वावध्यत्वमतुलमनयोर्दत्तवान् पुरा। वरोत्सेकेन मत्तौ च प्रमथ्य महतीं चमूम्
Long ago, he gave them both invulnerability, unmatched by any; intoxicated by the boon, they crushed a great army.
सुराणाममृतं वीरौ पीतवन्तौ महाबलौ। एतावेव हि संक्रुद्धौ सवाजिरथकुञ्जराम्
Those mighty heroes drank the nectar of the gods; indeed, when enraged, these two alone could destroy Lanka with its horses, chariots, and elephants.
लङ्कां नाशयितुं शक्तौ सर्वे तिष्ठन्तु वानराः। अहमेकोऽपि पर्याप्तः सराक्षसगणां पुरीम्
Let all the vanaras stand aside; I alone am sufficient to destroy Lanka, with all its hosts of rākṣasas.
तां लङ्कां तरसा हन्तुं रावणं च महाबलम्। किं पुनः सहितो वीरैर्बलवद्भिः कृतात्मभिः
To swiftly destroy that Lanka and the mighty Rāvaṇa—what then, if I am joined by valiant heroes of firm resolve?
कृतास्त्रैः प्लवगैः शक्तैर्भवद्भिर्विजयैषिभिः। वायुसूनोर्बलेनैव दग्धा लङ्केति नः श्रुतम्
With you, skilled in weapons, powerful, and eager for victory, and by the strength of Vāyu's son alone, we have heard that Lanka was burned.
दृष्टा देवी न चानीता इति तत्र निवेदितुम्। न युक्तमिव पश्यामि भवद्भिः ख्यातपौरुषैः
To report, 'The goddess was seen but not brought back,' does not seem fitting for you, whose prowess is renowned.
नहि वः प्लवने कश्चिन्नापि कश्चित् पराक्रमे। तुल्यः सामरदैत्येषु लोकेषु हरिसत्तमाः
For, O best of vanaras, in leaping or in valor, none among gods or demons in the worlds is your equal.
जित्वा लङ्कां सरक्षौघां हत्वा तं रावणं रणे। सीतामादाय गच्छामः सिद्धार्था हृष्टमानसाः
Having conquered Lanka with all its hosts and slain Rāvaṇa in battle, let us take Sītā and go, our purpose accomplished and hearts rejoicing.
तेष्वेवं हतवीरेषु राक्षसेषु हनूमता। किमन्यदत्र कर्तव्यं गृहीत्वा याम जानकीम्
When the rākṣasas have been slain by Hanumān, what else remains to be done here? Let us take Jānakī and depart.
रामलक्ष्मणयोर्मध्ये न्यस्याम जनकात्मजाम्। किं व्यलीकैस्तु तान् सर्वान् वानरान् वानरर्षभान्
Let us place the daughter of Janaka between Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa; what need is there for all these vanaras, or the best among vanaras, to act wrongly?
वयमेव हि गत्वा तान् हत्वा राक्षसपुङ्गवान्। राघवं द्रष्टुमर्हामः सुग्रीवं सहलक्ष्मणम्
Indeed, let us go ourselves, slay those foremost rākṣasas, and be worthy to see Rāghava, Sugrīva, and Lakṣmaṇa.
तमेवं कृतसंकल्पं जाम्बवान् हरिसत्तमः। उवाच परमप्रीतो वाक्यमर्थवदर्थवित्
Then Jāmbavān, the best of vanaras, greatly pleased and wise in meaning, spoke meaningful words to him, who had made such a resolve.
नैषा बुद्धिर्महाबुद्धे यद् ब्रवीषि महाकपे। विचेतुं वयमाज्ञप्ता दक्षिणां दिशमुत्तमाम्
O great-minded one, what you say is not our intention; we have been commanded to search the southern direction.
नानेतुं कपिराजेन नैव रामेण धीमता। कथंचिन्निर्जितां सीतामस्माभिर्नाभिरोचयेत्
Sītā, once won, would not please us if she were brought back by the monkey king or even by wise Rāma through any means.
राघवो नृपशार्दूलः कुलं व्यपदिशन् स्वकम्। प्रतिज्ञाय स्वयं राजा सीताविजयमग्रतः
Rāghava, the tiger among kings, proclaiming his own lineage, has himself vowed to win back Sītā before all.
सर्वेषां कपिमुख्यानां कथं मिथ्या करिष्यति। विफलं कर्म च कृतं भवेत् तुष्टिर्न तस्य च
How could the leader of all the monkeys act falsely before them? The deed would be fruitless, and he would find no satisfaction.
