नहि धर्मात्मनस्तस्य भार्याममिततेजसः। स्वचरित्राभिगुप्तां तां स्प्रष्टुमर्हति पावकः
Indeed, fire cannot touch the wife of that righteous man of immeasurable brilliance, who is guarded by her own conduct.
नूनं रामप्रभावेण वैदेह्याः सुकृतेन च। यन्मां दहनकर्मायं नादहद्धव्यवाहनः
Surely, by the power of Rama and the merit of Vaidehi, this fire, meant to burn, did not consume me, the bearer of offerings.
त्रयाणां भरतादीनां भ्रातॄणां देवता च या। रामस्य च मनःकान्ता सा कथं विनशिष्यति
How could she, who is the beloved of Rama's heart and the goddess of the three brothers—Bharata and the others—be destroyed?
यद् वा दहनकर्मायं सर्वत्र प्रभुरव्ययः। न मे दहति लाङ्गूलं कथमार्यां प्रधक्ष्यति
Or, if this fire, the eternal lord everywhere, does not burn my tail, how could it burn the noble lady?
पुनश्चाचिन्तयत् तत्र हनूमान् विस्मितस्तदा। हिरण्यनाभस्य गिरेर्जलमध्ये प्रदर्शनम्
Then Hanuman, amazed, again considered there the vision of the golden-naveled mountain in the midst of the waters.
तपसा सत्यवाक्येन अनन्यत्वाच्च भर्तरि। असौ विनिर्दहेदग्निं न तामग्निः प्रधक्ष्यति
By her austerity, truthfulness, and exclusive devotion to her husband, she could burn up fire itself; fire will not burn her.
स तथा चिन्तयंस्तत्र देव्या धर्मपरिग्रहम्। शुश्राव हनुमांस्तत्र चारणानां महात्मनाम्
Thus reflecting there on the lady's adherence to righteousness, Hanuman heard the words of the great-souled celestial bards.
अहो खलु कृतं कर्म दुर्विगाहं हनूमता। अग्निं विसृजता तीक्ष्णं भीमं राक्षससद्मनि
Ah, indeed, what a deed Hanuman has done—difficult to accomplish—releasing fierce and terrible fire in the house of the rakshasas!
प्रपलायितरक्षःस्त्रीबालवृद्धसमाकुला। जनकोलाहलाध्माता क्रन्दन्तीवाद्रिकन्दरैः
With the rakshasas fleeing, the city was filled with women, children, and elders, swelled by the tumult of the people, wailing as if from mountain caves.
दग्धेयं नगरी लङ्का साट्टप्राकारतोरणा। जानकी न च दग्धेति विस्मयोऽद्भुत एव नः
This city of Lanka, with its ramparts, walls, and gateways, has been burned, yet Janaki is not burned—this is truly a marvelous wonder to us.
इति शुश्राव हनुमान् वाचं ताममृतोपमाम्। बभूव चास्य मनसो हर्षस्तत्कालसम्भवः
Thus Hanuman heard those words, sweet as nectar, and at that very moment, joy arose in his heart.
स निमित्तैश्च दृष्टार्थैः कारणैश्च महागुणैः। ऋषिवाक्यैश्च हनुमानभवत् प्रीतमानसः
Then Hanuman, with omens, visible signs, reasons, and the words of seers, became gladdened in heart.
ततः कपिः प्राप्तमनोरथार्थ- स्तामक्षतां राजसुतां विदित्वा। प्रत्यक्षतस्तां पुनरेव दृष्ट्वा प्रतिप्रयाणाय मतिं चकार
Then the monkey, knowing that the princess was unharmed and that his cherished purpose was fulfilled, having seen her again directly, resolved to set out on his return journey.

Here begins the fifty-sixth chapter in the Sundara Kāṇḍa of the glorious Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa.
ततस्तु शिंशपामूले जानकीं पर्यवस्थिताम्। अभिवाद्याब्रवीद् दिष्ट्या पश्यामि त्वामिहाक्षताम्
Then, approaching Sītā who was seated at the foot of the śiṃśapā tree, Hanumān greeted her and said: 'By good fortune, I see you here unharmed.'
ततस्तं प्रस्थितं सीता वीक्षमाणा पुनः पुनः। भर्तुः स्नेहान्विता वाक्यं हनूमन्तमभाषत
Then Sītā, gazing again and again at him as he was about to depart, spoke to Hanumān, her words filled with affection for her husband.
यदि त्वं मन्यसे तात वसैकाहमिहानघ। क्वचित् सुसंवृते देशे विश्रान्तः श्वो गमिष्यसि
'If you think it proper, dear one, stay here for a single night, O sinless one; rest somewhere in a well-concealed place, and depart tomorrow.'
मम चैवाल्पभाग्यायाः सांनिध्यात् तव वानर। शोकस्यास्याप्रमेयस्य मुहूर्तं स्यादपि क्षयः
'And for me, so unfortunate, your presence, O Vānara, would bring even a moment's relief from this immeasurable sorrow.'
गते हि हरिशार्दूल पुनः सम्प्राप्तये त्वयि। प्राणेष्वपि न विश्वासो मम वानरपुङ्गव
'Once you, O tiger among monkeys, have gone, I will have no confidence even in my own life until you return, O foremost of Vānaras.'
अदर्शनं च ते वीर भूयो मां दारयिष्यति। दुःखाद् दुःखतरं प्राप्तां दुर्मनःशोककर्शिताम्
'And, O hero, your absence will torment me again, who am already afflicted by grief and weighed down by sorrow, bringing me a pain greater than pain itself.'
अयं च वीर संदेहस्तिष्ठतीव ममाग्रतः। सुमहत्सु सहायेषु हर्यृक्षेषु महाबलः
'And, O hero, a doubt stands before me: Even with such mighty allies among the monkeys and bears, how will they cross the vast ocean?'
कथं नु खलु दुष्पारं संतरिष्यति सागरम्। तानि हर्यृक्षसैन्यानि तौ वा नरवरात्मजौ
'How indeed will those armies of monkeys and bears, and those two sons of the best of men, cross the ocean that is so difficult to pass?'
त्रयाणामेव भूतानां सागरस्यापि लङ्घने। शक्तिः स्याद् वैनतेयस्य तव वा मारुतस्य वा
'Among all beings, only three might have the power to leap across the ocean: Garuḍa, you, or the Wind-god.'
तदत्र कार्यनिर्बन्धे समुत्पन्ने दुरासदे। किं पश्यसि समाधानं त्वं हि कार्यविशारदः
'Now that such a difficult obstacle has arisen in the accomplishment of this task, what solution do you see? For you are skilled in finding a way.'
काममस्य त्वमेवैकः कार्यस्य परिसाधने। पर्याप्तः परवीरघ्न यशस्यस्ते फलोदयः
'Indeed, you alone are sufficient to accomplish this task, O slayer of enemy heroes; your fame is established by your success.'
बलैस्तु संकुलां कृत्वा लङ्कां परबलार्दनः। मां नयेद् यदि काकुत्स्थस्तत् तस्य सदृशं भवेत्
'If Rāma, destroyer of enemy forces, were to fill Laṅkā with his armies and lead me away, that would be fitting for him.'
तद् यथा तस्य विक्रान्तमनुरूपं महात्मनः। भवत्याहवशूरस्य तथा त्वमुपपादय
'Therefore, as is proper for that great-souled, valiant hero in battle, so you must arrange matters accordingly.'
तदर्थोपहितं वाक्यं प्रश्रितं हेतुसंहितम्। निशम्य हनुमान् वीरो वाक्यमुत्तरमब्रवीत्
Hearing these respectful and well-reasoned words, spoken for that purpose, Hanumān, the hero, gave his reply.
देवि हर्यृक्षसैन्यानामीश्वरः प्लवतां वरः। सुग्रीवः सत्त्वसम्पन्नस्तवार्थे कृतनिश्चयः
'O lady, Sugrīva, lord of the monkey and bear armies, foremost among those who leap, endowed with virtue, is firmly resolved to act for your sake.'
स वानरसहस्राणां कोटीभिरभिसंवृतः। क्षिप्रमेष्यति वैदेहि सुग्रीवः प्लवगाधिपः
'That Sugrīva, lord of the monkeys, surrounded by thousands and millions of Vānaras, will come here quickly, O Vaidehī.'
