उत्पपाताथ वेगेन ननाद च महाकपिः। पुरद्वारं ततः श्रीमान् शैलशृङ्गमिवोन्नतम्
Then, leaping up with speed, the great monkey roared; from there, he reached the city's gate, towering like a mountain peak.
विभक्तरक्षःसम्बाधमाससादानिलात्मजः। स भूत्वा शैलसंकाशः क्षणेन पुनरात्मवान्
The son of the wind, having scattered the crowd of rakshasas, stood there, mountain-like; in a moment, he returned to his own form.
ह्रस्वतां परमां प्राप्तो बन्धनान्यवशातयत्। विमुक्तश्चाभवच्छ्रीमान् पुनः पर्वतसंनिभः
He became extremely small, slipped out of his bonds, and, freed, regained his glorious, mountain-like form.
वीक्षमाणश्च ददृशे परिघं तोरणाश्रितम्। स तं गृह्य महाबाहुः कालायसपरिष्कृतम्। रक्षिणस्तान् पुनः सर्वान् सूदयामास मारुतिः
Looking around, he saw an iron bar at the gate. Seizing it, the mighty-armed Hanuman, adorned with black steel, struck down all the guards once more.
स तान् निहत्वा रणचण्डविक्रमः समीक्षमाणः पुनरेव लङ्काम्। प्रदीप्तलाङ्गूलकृतार्चिमाली प्रकाशितादित्य इवार्चिमाली
Having slain them, fierce in battle, he gazed again upon Lanka, his blazing tail forming a garland of flames, shining like the sun encircled by rays.

Then the monkey, his wish fulfilled, gazed upon Lanka, his enthusiasm growing, and considered what task yet remained.
किं नु खल्ववशिष्टं मे कर्तव्यमिह साम्प्रतम्। यदेषां रक्षसां भूयः संतापजननं भवेत्
What, indeed, still remains for me to do here, that would cause even greater distress to these rākṣasas?
वनं तावत्प्रमथितं प्रकृष्टा राक्षसा हताः। बलैकदेशः क्षपितः शेषं दुर्गविनाशनम्
The grove has been destroyed, many rākṣasas slain, a portion of the army wiped out; what remains is the destruction of the fortress.
दुर्गे विनाशिते कर्म भवेत् सुखपरिश्रमम्। अल्पयत्नेन कार्येऽस्मिन् मम स्यात् सफलः श्रमः
If the fortress is destroyed, the task will be accomplished with ease, and my effort in this matter will bear fruit with little exertion.
यो ह्ययं मम लाङ्गूले दीप्यते हव्यवाहनः। अस्य संतर्पणं न्याय्यं कर्तुमेभिर्गृहोत्तमैः
Since this fire, like the sacred flame, burns upon my tail, it is fitting to satisfy it with these finest houses.
ततः प्रदीप्तलाङ्गूलः सविद्युदिव तोयदः। भवनाग्रेषु लङ्काया विचचार महाकपिः
Then, with his tail ablaze, like a rain-cloud flashing with lightning, the great monkey roamed before the houses of Lanka.
गृहाद् गृहं राक्षसानामुद्यानानि च वानरः। वीक्षमाणो ह्यसंत्रस्तः प्रासादांश्च चचार सः
From house to house of the rākṣasas, and through their gardens, the fearless monkey wandered, also moving among the palaces.
अवप्लुत्य महावेगः प्रहस्तस्य निवेशनम्। अग्निं तत्र विनिक्षिप्य श्वसनेन समो बली
Leaping with great speed, he entered Prahasta's residence, cast fire there, and, powerful as the wind, moved on.
ततोऽन्यत् पुप्लुवे वेश्म महापार्श्वस्य वीर्यवान्। मुमोच हनुमानग्निं कालानलशिखोपमम्
Then Hanuman, full of might, leapt to the house of Mahāpārśva and released fire there, like a tongue of the final conflagration.
वज्रदंष्ट्रस्य च तथा पुप्लुवे स महाकपिः। शुकस्य च महातेजाः सारणस्य च धीमतः
So too, the great monkey leapt to the houses of Vajradaṃṣṭra, Śuka, and the wise Sāraṇa, blazing with energy.
तथा चेन्द्रजितो वेश्म ददाह हरियूथपः। जम्बुमालेः सुमालेश्च ददाह भवनं ततः
Likewise, the leader of the monkeys set fire to the house of Indrajit, and then burned the dwellings of Jambumāli and Sumāli.
रश्मिकेतोश्च भवनं सूर्यशत्रोस्तथैव च। ह्रस्वकर्णस्य दंष्ट्रस्य रोमशस्य च रक्षसः
He burned the houses of Raśmiketu, Sūryaśatru, Hrasvakarṇa, Daṃṣṭra, and the rākṣasa Romaśa as well.
युद्धोन्मत्तस्य मत्तस्य ध्वजग्रीवस्य रक्षसः। विद्युज्जिह्वस्य घोरस्य तथा हस्तिमुखस्य च
He set fire to the homes of Yuddhonmatta, Matta, Dhvajagrīva, the fierce Vidyujjihva, and Hastimukha.
करालस्य विशालस्य शोणिताक्षस्य चैव हि। कुम्भकर्णस्य भवनं मकराक्षस्य चैव हि
He burned the houses of Karāla, Viśāla, Śoṇitākṣa, Kumbhakarṇa, and Makarākṣa as well.
नरान्तकस्य कुम्भस्य निकुम्भस्य दुरात्मनः। यज्ञशत्रोश्च भवनं ब्रह्मशत्रोस्तथैव च
He set fire to the homes of Narāntaka, Kumbha, the wicked Nikumbha, Yajñaśatru, and Brahmaśatru as well.
वर्जयित्वा महातेजा विभीषणगृहं प्रति। क्रममाणः क्रमेणैव ददाह हरिपुङ्गवः
Except for the house of Vibhīṣaṇa, the mighty Hanumān, proceeding step by step, set fire as he went.
तेषु तेषु महार्हेषु भवनेषु महायशाः। गृहेष्वृद्धिमतामृद्धिं ददाह कपिकुञ्जरः
In those splendid and costly mansions, the illustrious chief of monkeys set ablaze the prosperity of the prosperous.
सर्वेषां समतिक्रम्य राक्षसेन्द्रस्य वीर्यवान्। आससादाथ लक्ष्मीवान् रावणस्य निवेशनम्
Surpassing all the houses, the valiant Hanumān then approached the residence of Rāvaṇa, the lord of the Rākṣasas, resplendent in glory.
ततस्तस्मिन् गृहे मुख्ये नानारत्नविभूषिते। मेरुमन्दरसंकाशे नानामङ्गलशोभिते
There, in that principal house, adorned with various jewels, shining like Meru and Mandara, and resplendent with many auspicious signs—
प्रदीप्तमग्निमुत्सृज्य लाङ्गूलाग्रे प्रतिष्ठितम्। ननाद हनुमान् वीरो युगान्तजलदो यथा
Hanumān, the hero, released the blazing fire set at the tip of his tail, and roared like a thundercloud at the end of an age.
श्वसनेन च संयोगादतिवेगो महाबलः। कालाग्निरिव जज्वाल प्रावर्धत हुताशनः
By the force of the wind, the mighty fire blazed with great speed, growing like the fire of destruction at the end of time.
प्रदीप्तमग्निं पवनस्तेषु वेश्मसु चारयन्। तानि काञ्चनजालानि मुक्तामणिमयानि च
Carrying the blazing fire into those mansions, Hanumān set alight the golden lattices and those made of pearls and gems.
भवनानि व्यशीर्यन्त रत्नवन्ति महान्ति च। तानि भग्नविमानानि निपेतुर्वसुधातले
The great and jewel-adorned palaces were shattered; those with broken towers fell to the earth.
भवनानीव सिद्धानामम्बरात् पुण्यसंक्षये। संजज्ञे तुमुलः शब्दो राक्षसानां प्रधावताम्
Like the celestial dwellings of Siddhas falling from the sky at the end of their merit, a tumultuous sound arose from the fleeing Rākṣasas.
