संवृतान् भूमिभागांश्च सुविभक्तांश्च चत्वरान्। रथ्याश्च गृहसम्बाधाः कपिः शृङ्गाटकानि च
He saw enclosed plots of land, well-divided squares, streets crowded with houses, and market-places.
तथा रथ्योपरथ्याश्च तथैव च गृहान्तरान्। चत्वरेषु चतुष्केषु राजमार्गे तथैव च
He likewise saw main streets and side streets, as well as the interiors of houses, and the crossroads at the royal road.
घोषयन्ति कपिं सर्वे चार इत्येव राक्षसाः। स्त्रीबालवृद्धा निर्जग्मुस्तत्र तत्र कुतूहलात्
All the rākṣasas proclaimed, 'This is the spy monkey!' and women, children, and elders came out here and there, curious.
तं प्रदीपितलाङ्गूलं हनूमन्तं दिदृक्षवः। दीप्यमाने ततस्तस्य लाङ्गूलाग्रे हनूमतः
Eager to see Hanumān with his blazing tail, as the tip of Hanumān’s tail burned brightly—
राक्षस्यस्ता विरूपाक्ष्यः शंसुर्देव्यास्तदप्रियम्। यस्त्वया कृतसंवादः सीते ताम्रमुखः कपिः
The rākṣasī women with misshapen eyes told the queen of that misfortune: 'Sītā, the copper-faced monkey with whom you spoke—'
लाङ्गूलेन प्रदीप्तेन स एष परिणीयते। श्रुत्वा तद् वचनं क्रूरमात्मापहरणोपमम्
With his tail set aflame, he is being led around; hearing those cruel words, which were like a threat to his very life—
वैदेही शोकसंतप्ता हुताशनमुपागमत्। मङ्गलाभिमुखी तस्य सा तदासीन्महाकपेः
Vaidehī, scorched by grief, turned toward the sacred fire, seeking auspiciousness for that great monkey.
उपतस्थे विशालाक्षी प्रयता हव्यवाहनम्। यद्यस्ति पतिशुश्रूषा यद्यस्ति चरितं तपः। यदि वा त्वेकपत्नीत्वं शीतो भव हनूमतः
The wide-eyed lady, pure in intent, approached the fire-god and prayed: 'If I have served my husband, if I have practiced virtue, if I am truly devoted to one man, let Hanuman be cool.'
यदि किंचिदनुक्रोशस्तस्य मय्यस्ति धीमतः। यदि वा भाग्यशेषो मे शीतो भव हनूमतः
'If there is any compassion in that wise one for me, if any fortune remains for me, let Hanuman be cool.'
यदि मां वृत्तसम्पन्नां तत्समागमलालसाम्। स विजानाति धर्मात्मा शीतो भव हनूमतः
'If that righteous one knows me to be virtuous and longing for reunion with him, let Hanuman be cool.'
यदि मां तारयेदार्यः सुग्रीवः सत्यसंगरः। अस्माद् दुःखाम्बुसंरोधाच्छीतो भव हनूमतः
'If the noble Sugriva, steadfast in truth, will rescue me from this sea of sorrow, let Hanuman be cool.'
ततस्तीक्ष्णार्चिरव्यग्रः प्रदक्षिणशिखोऽनलः। जज्वाल मृगशावाक्ष्याः शंसन्निव शुभं कपेः
Then the fire, with sharp flames but unwavering, circled to the right and blazed around the doe-eyed lady, as if proclaiming good fortune for the monkey.
हनूमज्जनकश्चैव पुच्छानलयुतोऽनिलः। ववौ स्वास्थ्यकरो देव्याः प्रालेयानिलशीतलः
Hanuman and the wind, his father, together with the fire on his tail, blew a cool, health-giving, icy breeze for the goddess.
दह्यमाने च लाङ्गूले चिन्तयामास वानरः। प्रदीप्तोऽग्निरयं कस्मान्न मां दहति सर्वतः
As his tail was burning, the monkey wondered: 'This blazing fire does not burn me at all—why is that?'
दृश्यते च महाज्वालः करोति च न मे रुजम्। शिशिरस्येव सम्पातो लाङ्गूलाग्रे प्रतिष्ठितः
'The great flames are visible, yet they cause me no pain; at the tip of my tail, it feels as if a cool stream has settled.'
अथ वा तदिदं व्यक्तं यद् दृष्टं प्लवता मया। रामप्रभावादाश्चर्यं पर्वतः सरितां पतौ
'Or perhaps this is truly that wonder I saw when I crossed the ocean—by Rama's power, even the mountain yielded to the lord of rivers.'
यदि तावत् समुद्रस्य मैनाकस्य च धीमतः। रामार्थं सम्भ्रमस्तादृक् किमग्निर्न करिष्यति
'If the wise Mainaka and the ocean were so eager to help for Rama's sake, why would fire not do the same?'
सीतायाश्चानृशंस्येन तेजसा राघवस्य च। पितुश्च मम सख्येन न मां दहति पावकः
'Because of Sita's compassion, Rama's energy, and my father's friendship, the fire does not burn me.'
भूयः स चिन्तयामास मुहूर्तं कपिकुञ्जरः। कथमस्मद्विधस्येह बन्धनं राक्षसाधमैः
Then the mighty monkey pondered again for a moment: 'How could such as I be bound by these wicked rakshasas?'
प्रतिक्रियास्य युक्ता स्यात् सति मह्यं पराक्रमे। ततश्छित्त्वा च तान् पाशान् वेगवान् वै महाकपिः
'If I have strength, I should act accordingly.' Then the swift and mighty monkey broke those bonds.
उत्पपाताथ वेगेन ननाद च महाकपिः। पुरद्वारं ततः श्रीमान् शैलशृङ्गमिवोन्नतम्
Then, leaping up with speed, the great monkey roared; from there, he reached the city's gate, towering like a mountain peak.
विभक्तरक्षःसम्बाधमाससादानिलात्मजः। स भूत्वा शैलसंकाशः क्षणेन पुनरात्मवान्
The son of the wind, having scattered the crowd of rakshasas, stood there, mountain-like; in a moment, he returned to his own form.
ह्रस्वतां परमां प्राप्तो बन्धनान्यवशातयत्। विमुक्तश्चाभवच्छ्रीमान् पुनः पर्वतसंनिभः
He became extremely small, slipped out of his bonds, and, freed, regained his glorious, mountain-like form.
वीक्षमाणश्च ददृशे परिघं तोरणाश्रितम्। स तं गृह्य महाबाहुः कालायसपरिष्कृतम्। रक्षिणस्तान् पुनः सर्वान् सूदयामास मारुतिः
Looking around, he saw an iron bar at the gate. Seizing it, the mighty-armed Hanuman, adorned with black steel, struck down all the guards once more.
स तान् निहत्वा रणचण्डविक्रमः समीक्षमाणः पुनरेव लङ्काम्। प्रदीप्तलाङ्गूलकृतार्चिमाली प्रकाशितादित्य इवार्चिमाली
Having slain them, fierce in battle, he gazed again upon Lanka, his blazing tail forming a garland of flames, shining like the sun encircled by rays.

वीक्षमाणस्ततो लङ्कां कपिः कृतमनोरथः। वर्धमानसमुत्साहः कार्यशेषमचिन्तयत्
Then the monkey, his wish fulfilled, gazed upon Lanka, his enthusiasm growing, and considered what task yet remained.
किं नु खल्ववशिष्टं मे कर्तव्यमिह साम्प्रतम्। यदेषां रक्षसां भूयः संतापजननं भवेत्
What, indeed, still remains for me to do here, that would cause even greater distress to these rākṣasas?
वनं तावत्प्रमथितं प्रकृष्टा राक्षसा हताः। बलैकदेशः क्षपितः शेषं दुर्गविनाशनम्
The grove has been destroyed, many rākṣasas slain, a portion of the army wiped out; what remains is the destruction of the fortress.
दुर्गे विनाशिते कर्म भवेत् सुखपरिश्रमम्। अल्पयत्नेन कार्येऽस्मिन् मम स्यात् सफलः श्रमः
If the fortress is destroyed, the task will be accomplished with ease, and my effort in this matter will bear fruit with little exertion.
