This righteousness you have gained through the heat of austerity—such a possession should not be destroyed, nor the possession of one's own life.
The invulnerability you perceive for yourself through austerities, even among gods and demons, has a great cause for its end here.
Sugrīva is not a god, nor a yakṣa, nor a demon; Rāghava is a man, O king, and Sugrīva is lord of the monkeys; therefore, how will you protect your life, O king?
But the result of unrighteousness, which is bound to the fruit of wrongdoing, does not bring about the fulfillment of righteousness; indeed, righteousness destroys unrighteousness.
You have already obtained the fruit of righteousness—of this there is no doubt; but you will very soon reap the fruit of this unrighteousness as well.
Reflect on the slaughter at Janasthāna, on the killing of Vāli, and on the alliance between Rāma and Sugrīva—consider what is truly beneficial for yourself.
Indeed, I alone am capable of destroying Laṅkā, along with its horses, chariots, and elephants; but that is not my resolve in this matter.
For Rāma has vowed, in the presence of the hosts of monkeys and bears, to annihilate those enemies by whom Sītā has been wronged.
Even Indra himself, if he were to harm Rāma, would not find happiness—how much less someone like you.
She whom you know as Sītā, who now dwells in your house—know her as the Night of Destruction, destined to bring ruin upon all of Laṅkā.
Therefore, enough of this noose of Time, which has taken the form of enmity with Sītā and now hangs upon your shoulders—think of your own safety.
See this city, with its ramparts and gates, burning—set aflame by the power of Sītā and kindled by Rāma's wrath.
Do not bring destruction upon your friends, counselors, kinsmen, brothers, sons, treasures, wives, and upon Laṅkā itself.
Hear, O king of the Rākṣasas, the true words I speak—as the messenger of Rāma, and especially as a monkey.
Rāma, of great renown, is able to withdraw all the worlds, with all beings, both moving and unmoving, and to create them again as before.
Among the lords of gods, asuras, men, yakṣas, rākṣasas, serpents, vidyādharas, nāgas, gandharvas, and beasts—
Among siddhas, kings of kinnaras, and all birds—everywhere, among all beings, at all times—there is none such as he.
Whoever would fight against Rāma, whose valor equals Viṣṇu's, who is lord of all worlds, and who has done such harm as this—such a one, O king of kings, will find life itself hard to attain.
Neither gods nor demons, O lord of night-walkers, nor gandharvas, vidyādharas, nāgas, or yakṣas—all these, though Rāma is lord of the three worlds, are unable to stand against him in battle.
Neither Brahmā, the self-born, the four-faced one, nor Rudra, the three-eyed destroyer of Tripura, nor Indra, the great lord of the gods, is able to stand against Rāghava in battle.
Hearing the unyielding, harsh words of the monkey, who spoke with skill and without fear, the ten-headed one, his eyes wide with anger, ordered the great monkey's death.
In the glorious Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa, the Sundara Kāṇḍa, the fifty-second chapter.
Having heard the words of the great-souled monkey, Rāvaṇa, overcome with anger, ordered his execution.
Recognizing the wrathful lord of the rākṣasas and the matter at hand, one skilled in action began to ponder the course of action.
Resolute in purpose, he addressed the elder, renowned for conquering enemies, with words of great benefit, skillfully spoken and respectful.
Forgive your anger, O king of rākṣasas; be gracious and listen to my words. Those who know what is proper and improper, the noble rulers of earth, do not kill messengers.
O king, the slaying of the monkey is against righteousness and condemned by the ways of the world; it is unworthy of you, O hero.
You alone are wise in righteousness, grateful, skilled in royal duties, and know the highest and lowest among beings; you are the knower of ultimate truth.
If even those as discerning as you are seized by anger, then mastery of the scriptures is mere toil and nothing more.
Therefore, be gracious, O slayer of foes, O king of rākṣasas, difficult to overcome; having determined what is proper and improper, let the punishment of the messenger be decided.
