दुरात्मा पृच्छ्यतामेष कुतः किं वास्य कारणम्। वनभङ्गे च कोऽस्यार्थो राक्षसानां च तर्जने
'Let this wicked one be questioned: from where has he come, and what is his purpose? What is the reason for the destruction of the grove and the threatening of the demons?'
मत्पुरीमप्रधृष्यां वै गमने किं प्रयोजनम्। आयोधने वा कं कार्यं पृच्छ्यतामेष दुर्मतिः
'What is his intention in entering my impregnable city, or what is his aim in battle? Let this evil-minded one be questioned.'
रावणस्य वचः श्रुत्वा प्रहस्तो वाक्यमब्रवीत्। समाश्वसिहि भद्रं ते न भीः कार्या त्वया कपे
Hearing Ravana's words, Prahasta spoke: 'Be calm, blessings to you; you need not fear, O monkey.'
यदि तावत् त्वमिन्द्रेण प्रेषितो रावणालयम्। तत्त्वमाख्याहि मा ते भूद् भयं वानर मोक्ष्यसे
'If you have been sent here by Indra to Ravana's abode, speak the truth; do not be afraid, O monkey, you will be released.'
यदि वैश्रवणस्य त्वं यमस्य वरुणस्य च। चारुरूपमिदं कृत्वा प्रविष्टो नः पुरीमिमाम्
'If, having assumed this pleasing form, you have entered our city on behalf of Kubera, Yama, or Varuna—'
विष्णुना प्रेषितो वापि दूतो विजयकाङ्क्षिणा। नहि ते वानरं तेजो रूपमात्रं तु वानरम्
'Or if you have been sent by Vishnu, desiring victory, you are not truly a monkey; your brilliance is not merely that of a monkey.'
तत्त्वतः कथयस्वाद्य ततो वानर मोक्ष्यसे। अनृतं वदतश्चापि दुर्लभं तव जीवितम्
'Now speak the truth; then, O monkey, you will be released. If you speak falsely, your life will be hard to preserve.'
अथवा यन्निमित्तस्ते प्रवेशो रावणालये। एवमुक्तो हरिवरस्तदा रक्षोगणेश्वरम्
Or, for whatever reason you have entered the abode of Rāvaṇa, thus addressed, the foremost of monkeys then spoke to the lord of the rākṣasas.
अब्रवीन्नास्मि शक्रस्य यमस्य वरुणस्य च। धनदेन न मे सख्यं विष्णुना नास्मि चोदितः
He said, 'I am not an ally of Indra, Yama, or Varuṇa; nor am I sent by Kubera or Viṣṇu.'
जातिरेव मम त्वेषा वानरोऽहमिहागतः। दर्शने राक्षसेन्द्रस्य तदिदं दुर्लभं मया
'This alone is my nature: I am a monkey who has come here. The sight of the king of rākṣasas, which is difficult to obtain, has been achieved by me.'
वनं राक्षसराजस्य दर्शनार्थं विनाशितम्। ततस्ते राक्षसाः प्राप्ता बलिनो युद्धकाङ्क्षिणः
'The forest of the king of rākṣasas was destroyed by me for the sake of seeing him. Then, powerful rākṣasas, eager for battle, arrived.'
रक्षणार्थं च देहस्य प्रतियुद्धा मया रणे। अस्त्रपाशैर्न शक्योऽहं बद्धुं देवासुरैरपि
'For the protection of my body, I fought back in battle. Not even gods or asuras are able to bind me with weapons or nooses.'
पितामहादेष वरो ममापि हि समागतः। राजानं द्रष्टुकामेन मयास्त्रमनुवर्तितम्
'By the command of the Grandsire, this boon has come to me as well. Wishing to see the king, I submitted to the weapon.'
विमुक्तोऽप्यहमस्त्रेण राक्षसैस्त्वभिवेदितः। केनचिद् रामकार्येण आगतोऽस्मि तवान्तिकम्
'Even though released from the weapon, I was brought before the rākṣasas. For some purpose of Rāma, I have come into your presence.'
दूतोऽहमिति विज्ञाय राघवस्यामितौजसः। श्रूयतामेव वचनं मम पथ्यमिदं प्रभो
'Know me as the messenger of Rāghava, of immeasurable energy. Hear now my words, which are beneficial, O lord.'

The fifty-first sarga is to be heard.
तं समीक्ष्य महासत्त्वं सत्त्ववान् हरिसत्तमः। वाक्यमर्थवदव्यग्रस्तमुवाच दशाननम्
Observing that great-souled one, the best of monkeys, steadfast and composed, spoke meaningful words to the ten-headed one.
अहं सुग्रीवसंदेशादिह प्राप्तस्तवान्तिके। राक्षसेश हरीशस्त्वां भ्राता कुशलमब्रवीत्
'I have come here to you bearing Sugrīva's message. O lord of rākṣasas, the lord of monkeys, your brother, inquires of your welfare.'
भ्रातुः श्रृणु समादेशं सुग्रीवस्य महात्मनः। धर्मार्थसहितं वाक्यमिह चामुत्र च क्षमम्
'Hear the command of your brother Sugrīva, the great-souled one—a speech joined with righteousness and purpose, suitable here and hereafter.'
राजा दशरथो नाम रथकुञ्जरवाजिमान्। पितेव बन्धुर्लोकस्य सुरेश्वरसमद्युतिः
'There was a king named Daśaratha, possessing chariots, elephants, and horses, a friend to all people like a father, radiant as the lord of gods.'
ज्येष्ठस्तस्य महाबाहुः पुत्रः प्रियतरः प्रभुः। पितुर्निदेशान्निष्क्रान्तः प्रविष्टो दण्डकावनम्
'His eldest son, mighty-armed, beloved, and powerful, departed to the Daṇḍaka forest at his father's command.'
लक्ष्मणेन सह भ्राता सीतया सह भार्यया। रामो नाम महातेजा धर्म्यं पन्थानमाश्रितः
'With his brother Lakṣmaṇa and his wife Sītā, Rāma by name, of great splendor, followed the righteous path.'
तस्य भार्या जनस्थाने भ्रष्टा सीतेति विश्रुता। वैदेहस्य सुता राज्ञो जनकस्य महात्मनः
'His wife, lost in Janasthāna, is renowned as Sītā, the daughter of King Janaka, the great-souled ruler of Videha.'
मार्गमाणस्तु तां देवीं राजपुत्रः सहानुजः। ऋष्यमूकमनुप्राप्तः सुग्रीवेण च संगतः
'While searching for that princess, the prince, with his younger brother, reached Ṛśyamūka and was united with Sugrīva.'
तस्य तेन प्रतिज्ञातं सीतायाः परिमार्गणम्। सुग्रीवस्यापि रामेण हरिराज्यं निवेदितुम्
'He promised to search for Sītā, and Rāma, in turn, pledged to restore Sugrīva to the kingship of the monkeys.'
ततस्तेन मृधे हत्वा राजपुत्रेण वालिनम्। सुग्रीवः स्थापितो राज्ये हर्यृक्षाणां गणेश्वरः
Then, after the prince slew Vāli in battle, Sugrīva was established in the kingdom as the lord of the hosts of monkeys and bears.
त्वया विज्ञातपूर्वश्च वाली वानरपुङ्गवः। स तेन निहतः संख्ये शरेणैकेन वानरः
You already knew Vāli, the foremost of monkeys; he was slain in combat by that one, with a single arrow.
स सीतामार्गणे व्यग्रः सुग्रीवः सत्यसंगरः। हरीन् सम्प्रेषयामास दिशः सर्वा हरीश्वरः
Engaged in the search for Sītā, Sugrīva, steadfast in his promise, swiftly sent out the monkeys in all directions, as their lord.
तां हरीणां सहस्राणि शतानि नियुतानि च। दिक्षु सर्वासु मार्गन्ते ह्यधश्चोपरि चाम्बरे
Thousands, hundreds of thousands of monkeys searched in every direction, below, above, and in the sky.
वैनतेयसमाः केचित् केचित् तत्रानिलोपमाः। असङ्गगतयः शीघ्रा हरिवीरा महाबलाः
Some were equal to Garuḍa, some like the wind; swift, unimpeded, mighty monkey heroes.
