This mighty one, radiant as the young sun, performs great deeds like a mere child at play; yet, though skilled in all arts of war, I find no resolve within me to bring about his destruction.
He is a great soul, immense in strength, steadfast and exceedingly enduring in combat; without doubt, by virtue of his deeds, he is honored by Nāgas, Yakṣas, and sages alike.
With a mind grown bold through valor and enthusiasm, he stands before me, watching intently; indeed, his prowess could shake the hearts even of swift-acting gods and demons.
Truly, he must not be disregarded, for his valor in battle only increases; today, I am resolved to slay him, for a growing fire is never fit to be ignored.
Thus pondering the enemy's speed, and applying his own skill in action, the mighty one gathered his force and, at that moment, resolved to kill him.
That heroic son of the wind, the monkey, struck down those excellent, well-trained, load-bearing horses on the wind-swept path with blows of his palm.
Then, struck by the palm, that great chariot-warrior—whose charioteer had been subdued by the lord of the tawny monkeys—his chariot broken, its yoke overturned, fell to the ground from the sky, his horses slain.
Abandoning his chariot, that great warrior, armed with bow and sword, leapt into the sky; then, driven by fury, like a sage of fierce might leaving his body, he soared aloft.
Then the monkey, moving through the air—where the king of birds and the wind-born Siddhas roam—swift as the wind, approached him and firmly seized him by the feet.
Seizing him as Garuḍa might grasp a great serpent, the best of monkeys, whose valor matched his father's, whirled him around a thousand times and hurled him violently to the earth in battle.
His arms, thighs, hips, and chest shattered, his bones and eyes crushed, his joints broken, his bindings torn apart, blood streaming—thus the demon was slain on the ground by the son of the wind.
The great monkey, pressing him to the earth, struck terror into the lord of the demons; and he was beheld by great sages, by those who move with the discus, by spirits, Yakṣas, serpents, and gods with Indra, all filled with intense wonder at the slain prince.
Having slain Akṣa, the prince, whose eyes resembled blood, and who was like the son of the thunder-wielder in battle, the hero at once approached the gateway, timely as Time itself at the end of an age.

Hear now the forty-eighth chapter in the glorious Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa, in the Sundara Kāṇḍa.
Then the great-souled lord of the demons, seeing Hanuman had slain Akṣa, gathered his mind and, filled with anger, commanded Indrajit, who was like a god.
Even the gods, along with the hosts of Maruts, could not stand in battle against your weapon's power, though they sought refuge with the lord of the gods.
No one in the three worlds, protected by the strength of his arms or guarded by asceticism, or even one who is foremost in place and time, remains unwearied in battle; you alone possess the highest wisdom.
For you, no deed in battle is impossible; no task is left unconsidered in counsel and planning. There is no one among the three hosts who does not know your mastery of weapons and strength.
Your ascetic power, strength, valor, and skill with weapons in combat are all fitting to you and to me. Yet, when I face you in the heat of battle, my mind, resolved on its purpose, does not grow weary.
All the attendants have been slain, as well as the rakshasa Jambumali, and the five valiant sons of ministers, leaders of the army.
Fully equipped forces, with horses, elephants, and chariots, have been destroyed; your dear brother, the prince Aksha, has also been killed. Yet, among all these, my concern is only for you, O destroyer of enemies.
Seeing this great army destroyed, and the monkey's power and valor, and considering your own true strength, unleash your force in accordance with your own might.
When you are present, the force of battle subsides, as when the enemy is pacified. Therefore, carefully assess both your own strength and that of the foe, and then engage, O best among wielders of weapons.
O hero, armies do not fall in groups even when struck by the mighty thunderbolt; there is no measure for the speed of the wind, nor can one destroy with mere effort what is like fire.
Thus, having thoroughly considered this matter, with your mind steady in your own duty, and recalling the divine power of your bow, undertake the task that remains unaccomplished.
Indeed, it is not out of preference that I send you; this is the way of royal and kshatriya duty, and such is my considered judgment.
Mastery in the use of various weapons in battle must certainly be known, O subduer of foes, and victory in war is always to be desired.
Then, hearing his father's words, the illustrious son of the skilled one quickly circumambulated his lord, the hero whose mind was set on battle.
Then, honored by his chosen followers, Indrajit, his enthusiasm aroused for war, entered the battlefield.
The glorious, lotus-eyed son of the lord of the rakshasas, radiant in energy, emerged like the ocean at the time of the full moon.
