ततः स मथिताष्टाश्वं रथं भग्नाक्षकूबरम्। विहाय न्यपतद् भूमौ दुर्धरस्त्यक्तजीवितः
With his eight horses crushed and the chariot's axle and pole broken, Durdhara abandoned his chariot and fell to the ground, his life forsaken.
तं विरूपाक्षयूपाक्षौ दृष्ट्वा निपतितं भुवि। तौ जातरोषौ दुर्धर्षावुत्पेततुररिंदमौ
Seeing Durdhara fallen on the ground, Virūpākṣa and Yupākṣa, filled with anger and difficult to defeat, both leapt up, destroyers of foes.
स ताभ्यां सहसोत्प्लुत्य विष्ठितो विमलेऽम्बरे। मुद्गराभ्यां महाबाहुर्वक्षस्यभिहतः कपिः
Then, as the great-armed monkey suddenly leapt up with them into the clear sky, he was struck on the chest by their maces.
तयोर्वेगवतोर्वेगं निहत्य स महाबलः। निपपात पुनर्भूमौ सुपर्ण इव वेगितः
That mighty one, having overcome the force of those two swift warriors, fell again to the ground, like a swift Garuda.
स सालवृक्षमासाद्य समुत्पाट्य च वानरः। तावुभौ राक्षसौ वीरौ जघान पवनात्मजः
The monkey, reaching a sal tree and uprooting it, slew both those heroic rakshasas, the son of the wind.
ततस्तांस्त्रीन् हतान् ज्ञात्वा वानरेण तरस्विना। अभिपेदे महावेगः प्रहस्य प्रघसो बली
Then, knowing those three had been slain by the powerful monkey, Praghasa, strong and swift, approached, laughing.
भासकर्णश्च संक्रुद्धः शूलमादाय वीर्यवान्। एकतः कपिशार्दूलं यशस्विनमवस्थितौ
Bhāsakarṇa, enraged and valorous, took up a spear, and both stood facing the illustrious tiger among monkeys.
पट्टिशेन शिताग्रेण प्रघसः प्रत्यपोथयत्। भासकर्णश्च शूलेन राक्षसः कपिकुञ्जरम्
Praghasa struck the monkey-elephant with a sharp-edged lance, and Bhāsakarṇa, the rakshasa, with a spear.
स ताभ्यां विक्षतैर्गात्रैरसृग्दिग्धतनूरुहः। अभवद् वानरः क्रुद्धो बालसूर्यसमप्रभः
With his limbs wounded by those two, his body stained with blood, the monkey became enraged, shining like the young sun.
समुत्पाट्य गिरेः शृङ्गं समृगव्यालपादपम्। जघान हनुमान् वीरो राक्षसौ कपिकुञ्जरः। गिरिशृङ्गसुनिष्पिष्टौ तिलशस्तौ बभूवतुः
Hanuman, the heroic monkey-elephant, uprooted a mountain peak with beasts, serpents, and trees, and slew the two rakshasas; crushed by the mountain peak, they became like sesame seeds.
ततस्तेष्ववसन्नेषु सेनापतिषु पञ्चसु। बलं तदवशेषं तु नाशयामास वानरः
Then, when those five commanders had fallen, the monkey destroyed the remaining force.
अश्वैरश्वान् गजैर्नागान् योधैर्योधान् रथै रथान्। स कपिर्नाशयामास सहस्राक्ष इवासुरान्
With horses against horses, elephants against elephants, warriors against warriors, chariots against chariots, the monkey destroyed them, like Indra destroying the asuras.
हयैर्नागैस्तुरंगैश्च भग्नाक्षैश्च महारथैः। हतैश्च राक्षसैर्भूमी रुद्धमार्गा समन्ततः
With horses, elephants, chargers, broken chariots, and slain rakshasas, the earth was blocked in all directions.
ततः कपिस्तान् ध्वजिनीपतीन् रणे निहत्य वीरान् सबलान् सवाहनान्। तथैव वीरः परिगृह्य तोरणं कृतक्षणः काल इव प्रजाक्षये
Then the monkey, having slain those heroic commanders with their troops and vehicles in battle, seized the gate, ready at the moment like Time at the destruction of creatures.

सेनापतीन् पञ्च स तु प्रमापितान् हनूमता सानुचरान् सवाहनान्। निशम्य राजा समरोद्धतोन्मुखं कुमारमक्षं प्रसमैक्षताक्षम्
Having heard that the five commanders with their followers and vehicles had been subdued by Hanuman, the king, eager for battle, looked intently at Prince Aksha.
स तस्य दृष्ट्यर्पणसम्प्रचोदितः प्रतापवान् काञ्चनचित्रकार्मुकः। समुत्पपाताथ सदस्युदीरितो द्विजातिमुख्यैर्हविषेव पावकः
Prompted by the king's gaze, that powerful prince, with a golden, decorated bow, rose up, as summoned in the assembly, like fire called forth by the priests for the offering.
ततो महान् बालदिवाकरप्रभं प्रतप्तजाम्बूनदजालसंततम्। रथं समास्थाय ययौ स वीर्यवान् महाहरिं तं प्रति नैर्ऋतर्षभः
Then, mounting a great chariot, radiant like the young sun, adorned with a network of heated gold, that valorous leader of the rakshasas went forth against the great monkey.
ततस्तपःसंग्रहसंचयार्जितं प्रतप्तजाम्बूनदजालचित्रितम्। पताकिनं रत्नविभूषितध्वजं मनोजवाष्टाश्ववरैः सुयोजितम्
That chariot, earned by accumulated ascetic power, adorned with heated gold, bearing banners, with a jewel-encrusted flag, well yoked with eight swift horses.
सुरासुराधृष्यमसङ्गचारिणं तडित्प्रभं व्योमचरं समाहितम्। सतूणमष्टासिनिबद्धबन्धुरं यथाक्रमावेशितशक्तितोमरम्
Unassailable by gods and demons, moving freely, shining like lightning, traversing the sky, equipped with quivers and eight swords, beautifully bound, with spears and javelins arranged in order.
विराजमानं प्रतिपूर्णवस्तुना सहेमदाम्ना शशिसूर्यवर्चसा। दिवाकराभं रथमास्थितस्ततः स निर्जगामामरतुल्यविक्रमः
Radiant with all its filled equipment, with golden reins, shining like the moon and sun, that chariot, resembling the sun, was mounted by him, who departed, heroic as the immortals.
स पूरयन् खं च महीं च साचलां तुरङ्गमातङ्गमहारथस्वनैः। बलैः समेतैः सहतोरणस्थितं समर्थमासीनमुपागमत् कपिम्
He, filling the sky and the earth with mountains, with the sounds of horses, elephants, and great chariots, approached the capable monkey who was stationed at the gate, surrounded by assembled troops.
स तं समासाद्य हरिं हरीक्षणो युगान्तकालाग्निमिव प्रजाक्षये। अवस्थितं विस्मितजातसम्भ्रमं समैक्षताक्षो बहुमानचक्षुषा
He, Akṣa, having approached that monkey, whose eyes were like those of a lion, beheld him—seated, steadfast, and causing wonder and agitation—like the fire of destruction at the end of an age, intent on the annihilation of beings, and gazed at him with eyes full of respect.
स तस्य वेगं च कपेर्महात्मनः पराक्रमं चारिषु रावणात्मजः। विचारयन् स्वं च बलं महाबलो युगक्षये सूर्य इवाभिवर्धत
That mighty son of Rāvaṇa, considering the speed and valor of the great-souled monkey, and reflecting on his own strength, grew in might like the sun at the end of an age.
स जातमन्युः प्रसमीक्ष्य विक्रमं स्थितः स्थिरः संयति दुर्निवारणम्। समाहितात्मा हनुमन्तमाहवे प्रचोदयामास शितैः शरैस्त्रिभिः
Then, observing the monkey’s formidable prowess—firm and unshakable in battle, difficult to withstand—he, steady and composed, his anger aroused, urged Hanuman in combat with three sharp arrows.
ततः कपिं तं प्रसमीक्ष्य गर्वितं जितश्रमं शत्रुपराजयोचितम्। अवैक्षताक्षः समुदीर्णमानसं सबाणपाणिः प्रगृहीतकार्मुकः
Then Akṣa, beholding that proud monkey, unwearied and fit to conquer enemies, with his mind stirred up, stood with bow in hand and arrows ready, gazing intently.
स हेमनिष्काङ्गदचारुकुण्डलः समाससादाशुपराक्रमः कपिम्। तयोर्बभूवाप्रतिमः समागमः सुरासुराणामपि सम्भ्रमप्रदः
He, adorned with golden armlets and beautiful earrings, possessing extraordinary valor, approached the monkey; their encounter was unparalleled, causing even gods and demons to be filled with alarm.
ररास भूमिर्न तताप भानुमान् ववौ न वायुः प्रचचाल चाचलः। कपेः कुमारस्य च वीर्यसंयुगं ननाद च द्यौरुदधिश्च चुक्षुभे
The earth resounded, the sun did not scorch, the wind did not blow, and the mountains did not tremble; as the contest of strength between the monkey and the prince began, the heavens roared and the ocean was agitated.
स तस्य वीरः सुमुखान् पतत्रिणः सुवर्णपुङ्खान् सविषानिवोरगान्। समाधिसंयोगविमोक्षतत्त्ववि- च्छरानथ त्रीन् कपिमूर्ध्न्यताडयत्
That hero struck the monkey’s head with three well-feathered arrows, golden-tipped and venomous like serpents, arrows whose release and aim were mastered through deep concentration.
स तैः शरैर्मूर्ध्नि समं निपातितैः क्षरन्नसृग्दिग्धविवृत्तनेत्रः। नवोदितादित्यनिभः शरांशुमान् व्यराजतादित्य इवांशुमालिकः
Struck squarely on the head by those arrows, his eyes bloodshot and rolling, blood streaming, Hanuman shone like the newly risen sun, radiant with the rays of arrows, resembling the sun with its circle of beams.
