सृजन्तो बाणवृष्टिं ते रथगर्जितनिःस्वनाः। प्रावृट्काल इवाम्भोदा विचेरुर्नैर्ऋताम्बुदाः
Releasing showers of arrows, their chariots roaring, the rakshasas moved about like storm clouds in the rainy season.
अवकीर्णस्ततस्ताभिर्हनूमान् शरवृष्टिभिः। अभवत् संवृताकारः शैलराडिव वृष्टिभिः
Then Hanuman was covered by those showers of arrows, and his form became concealed, like a mountain king enveloped by rain.
स शरान् वञ्चयामास तेषामाशुचरः कपिः। रथवेगांश्च वीराणां विचरन् विमलेऽम्बरे
That monkey, moving swiftly, evaded their arrows and the speed of the warriors' chariots, roaming in the clear sky.
स तैः क्रीडन् धनुष्मद्भिर्व्योम्नि वीरः प्रकाशते। धनुष्मद्भिर्यथा मेघैर्मारुतः प्रभुरम्बरे
Playing among those bowmen in the sky, the hero shone, as the lord of winds shines among clouds bearing bows.
स कृत्वा निनदं घोरं त्रासयंस्तां महाचमूम्। चकार हनुमान् वेगं तेषु रक्षःसु वीर्यवान्
Hanuman, making a terrible roar and terrifying that great army, displayed his speed among those rakshasas, powerful in valor.
तलेनाभिहनत् कांश्चित् पादैः कांश्चित् परंतपः। मुष्टिभिश्चाहनत् कांश्चिन्नखैः कांश्चिद् व्यदारयत्
With his palm he struck some, with his feet others, the tormentor of foes; with his fists he struck some, and with his nails he tore others.
प्रममाथोरसा कांश्चिदूरुभ्यामपरानपि। केचित् तस्यैव नादेन तत्रैव पतिता भुवि
He crushed some with his chest, others with his thighs; some fell to the ground right there, merely from the sound he made.
ततस्तेष्ववसन् नेषु भूमौ निपतितेषु च। तत्सैन्यमगमत् सर्वं दिशो दश भयार्दितम्
Then, as those who remained fell to the ground, all that army, struck with fear, scattered in all ten directions.
विनेदुर्विस्वरं नागा निपेतुर्भुवि वाजिनः। भग्ननीडध्वजच्छत्रैर्भूश्च कीर्णाभवद् रथैः
The elephants wailed with harsh voices, the horses collapsed to the earth, and the ground became strewn with chariots whose banners, standards, and canopies were shattered.
स्रवता रुधिरेणाथ स्रवन्त्यो दर्शिताः पथि। विविधैश्च स्वनैर्लङ्का ननाद विकृतं तदा
Blood flowed and was seen on the path, and various strange sounds arose as Lanka roared in a dreadful manner.
स तान् प्रवृद्धान् विनिहत्य राक्षसान् महाबलश्चण्डपराक्रमः कपिः। युयुत्सुरन्यैः पुनरेव राक्षसै- स्तदेव वीरोऽभिजगाम तोरणम्
Having slain those mighty rakshasas, that great and fiercely valiant monkey, eager for battle with the remaining rakshasas, once again approached the same gateway.
इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीये आदिकाव्ये सुन्दरकाण्डे पञ्चचत्वारिंशः सर्गः ।। ५.
Thus ends the forty-fifth sarga in the Sundara Kanda of the glorious Ramayana, the first poem, composed by the sage Valmiki.

Hear now the forty-sixth sarga in the Sundara Kanda of the glorious Valmiki Ramayana.
हतान् मन्त्रिसुतान् बुद्ध्वा वानरेण महात्मना। रावणः संवृताकारश्चकार मतिमुत्तमाम्
Learning that the sons of his ministers had been slain by the great-souled monkey, Ravana, concealing his thoughts, devised an excellent plan.
स विरूपाक्षयूपाक्षौ दुर्धरं चैव राक्षसम्। प्रघसं भासकर्णं च पञ्च सेनाग्रनायकान्
He summoned Virupaksha, Yupaksha, the rakshasa Durdhara, Praghasa, and Bhasakarna—five commanders of the army.
संदिदेश दशग्रीवो वीरान् नयविशारदान्। हनूमद्ग्रहणेऽव्यग्रान् वायुवेगसमान् युधि
The ten-headed one instructed these heroes, skilled in strategy and undisturbed in battle, equal to the wind in speed, to capture Hanuman.
यात सेनाग्रगाः सर्वे महाबलपरिग्रहाः। सवाजिरथमातङ्गाः स कपिः शास्यतामिति
Go forth, all you leaders of the army, with your great forces—horses, chariots, and elephants—and subdue that monkey.
यत्तैश्च खलु भाव्यं स्यात् तमासाद्य वनालयम्। कर्म चापि समाधेयं देशकालाविरोधितम्
Whatever must be done upon confronting that forest-dweller, let that action be carried out, in accordance with place and time.
न ह्यहं तं कपिं मन्ये कर्मणा प्रति तर्कयन्। सर्वथा तन्महद् भूतं महाबलपरिग्रहम्
For, considering his deeds, I do not think that monkey is ordinary; in every way, he possesses immense might.
वानरोऽयमिति ज्ञात्वा नहि शुद्ध्यति मे मनः। नैवाहं तं कपिं मन्ये यथेयं प्रस्तुता कथा
Knowing that he is a monkey does not put my mind at ease; nor do I consider him as he is described in this account.
भवेदिन्द्रेण वा सृष्टमस्मदर्थं तपोबलात्। सनागयक्षगन्धर्वदेवासुरमहर्षयः
Perhaps he was created by Indra for our destruction, through ascetic power, or he may be one of the nagas, yakshas, gandharvas, devas, asuras, or great sages.
युष्माभिः प्रहितैः सर्वैर्मया सह विनिर्जिताः। तैरवश्यं विधातव्यं व्यलीकं किंचिदेव नः
All those whom you and I have defeated together, sent by you, must certainly have devised some deception against us.
तदेव नात्र संदेहः प्रसह्य परिगृह्यताम्। यात सेनाग्रगाः सर्वे महाबलपरिग्रहाः
Therefore, let there be no doubt—seize him by force; go forth, all you leaders of the army, with your great forces.
सवाजिरथमातङ्गाः स कपिः शास्यतामिति। नावमन्यो भवद्भिश्च कपिर्धीरपराक्रमः
With horses, chariots, and elephants, subdue that monkey; do not underestimate the monkey, whose courage and prowess are steadfast.
दृष्टा हि हरयः पूर्वे मया विपुलविक्रमाः। वाली च सह सुग्रीवो जाम्बवांश्च महाबलः
For I have seen monkeys before, of great valor—Vali, together with Sugriva, and the mighty Jambavan.
नीलः सेनापतिश्चैव ये चान्ये द्विविदादयः। नैव तेषां गतिर्भीमा न तेजो न पराक्रमः
Neither Nīla, the commander, nor the others like Dvivida possess such dreadful speed, brilliance, or valor.
न मतिर्न बलोत्साहो न रूपपरिकल्पनम्। महत्सत्त्वमिदं ज्ञेयं कपिरूपं व्यवस्थितम्
They lack discernment, strength, enthusiasm, and even impressive form; this great being, though in the form of a monkey, must be recognized as extraordinary.
प्रयत्नं महदास्थाय क्रियतामस्य निग्रहः। कामं लोकास्त्रयः सेन्द्राः ससुरासुरमानवाः
Let great effort be made to restrain him; indeed, even the three worlds with Indra, along with gods, demons, and humans,
भवतामग्रतः स्थातुं न पर्याप्ता रणाजिरे। तथापि तु नयज्ञेन जयमाकाङ्क्षता रणे
are not sufficient to stand before you on the battlefield; yet, one who seeks victory in war must act with the wisdom of strategy.
आत्मा रक्ष्यः प्रयत्नेन युद्धसिद्धिर्हि चञ्चला। ते स्वामिवचनं सर्वे प्रतिगृह्य महौजसः
One must protect oneself with utmost care, for success in battle is fickle; all those mighty ones accepted their master's command.
