Then, confronting Rāvaṇa in battle, with his ministers, army, and chariots, understanding his mind and strength held in his heart, I shall return from here at ease.
This excellent grove, delightful to the eyes and mind, like a garden of paradise, belonging to that cruel one, is filled with various trees and vines.
I will destroy this grove like fire consumes a dry forest; when it is ruined, Rāvaṇa will become enraged.
Then the lord of the demons will assemble a great force with horses, mighty chariots, and elephants, armed with tridents, iron clubs, and spears; then a great battle will ensue.
And I, meeting those fierce warriors in battle, undaunted by the demons, will strike down the force sent by Rāvaṇa, and happily return to the abode of the monkey king.
Then, like the wind, enraged, the mighty Hanuman began to hurl great trees with the force of his thighs.
Then that heroic Hanuman destroyed the pleasure grove, resounding with intoxicated birds, filled with various trees and vines.
That grove, with its trees shattered, its water tanks broken, and mountain peaks crushed to powder, became unpleasant to behold.
With cries of various birds, broken water tanks, copper-colored exhausted leaves, and weary trees and vines.
That forest did not appear as if it had been struck by a wildfire; the creepers, with their coverings in disarray, trembled as if agitated.
With creeper-cottages and decorated bowers destroyed, wild beasts and animals crying in distress, birds, and stone shelters torn apart, that great forest became unrecognizable in form.
That woodland, with its clusters of grief-stricken creepers, became like the pleasure-garden of the ten-headed one’s women, all because of the monkey’s might.
Then, having committed a great offense against the lord of the earth, an offense in thought against the great-souled one, the monkey, alone and eager to fight many mighty warriors, blazing with splendor, took his stand at the gateway.
Hear now the forty-second chapter in the glorious Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa, in the Sundara Kāṇḍa.
Then, because of the cries of birds and the sound of breaking trees, all the inhabitants of Laṅkā became frightened and agitated.
When sleep had departed, the demonesses with distorted faces saw that forest destroyed and that heroic great monkey.
Seeing them, the mighty-armed, great-souled, and powerful monkey assumed a very formidable form, terrifying to the demonesses.
Then, seeing the monkey, vast as a mountain and of immense strength, the demonesses questioned the daughter of Janaka.
Who is this? Whose is he? From where has he come? For what reason has he arrived here? And how have you conversed with him?
Tell us, wide-eyed one, do not be afraid, O fortunate lady. What conversation have you had with him, O dark-eyed one?
Then that virtuous and radiant Sītā replied: What recourse do I have in discerning the forms of these shape-shifting demons?
You alone know who he is and what he will do; just as a serpent knows the feet of another serpent, without doubt.
I too am exceedingly afraid; I do not know who he is. I think he is a demon, come here in whatever form he wishes.
Hearing Vaidehī’s words, the demonesses quickly scattered; some remained, while others went to inform Rāvaṇa.
In the presence of Rāvaṇa, the demonesses with distorted faces reported about the dreadful, monstrous monkey.
O king, in the midst of the Aśoka grove stands a monkey of terrible form, who has conversed with Sītā and possesses immeasurable valor.
But Janaka’s daughter, Sītā of deer-like eyes, though questioned by us in many ways, does not wish to reveal anything about that monkey.
He might be a messenger of Indra, or a messenger of Kubera, or perhaps sent by Rāma himself, desiring to search for Sītā.
With that same wondrous form—so captivating to the mind—he has ravaged the pleasure-garden, crowded with many kinds of deer.
There is no place in that garden which he did not destroy, except for the spot where Lady Jānakī is; that alone he left untouched.
