मनःशिलायास्तिलको गण्डपार्श्वे निवेशितः। त्वया प्रणष्टे तिलके तं किल स्मर्तुमर्हसि

स वीर्यवान् कथं सीतां हृतां समनुमन्यसे। वसन्तीं रक्षसां मध्ये महेन्द्रवरुणोपम
How can that mighty one, equal to Mahendra and Varuṇa, endure that Sītā has been carried off, dwelling among Rākṣasas?
एष चूडामणिर्दिव्यो मया सुपरिरक्षितः। एतं दृष्ट्वा प्रहृष्यामि व्यसने त्वामिवानघ
This divine crest-jewel, well guarded by me, I now show you; seeing it, I rejoice in adversity, as if I were seeing you, O sinless one.
एष निर्यातितः श्रीमान् मया ते वारिसम्भवः। अतः परं न शक्ष्यामि जीवितुं शोकलालसा
This auspicious jewel, born of water, has been sent by me to you; beyond this, I will not be able to live, longing as I am in sorrow.
असह्यानि च दुःखानि वाचश्च हृदयच्छिदः। राक्षसैः सह संवासं त्वत्कृते मर्षयाम्यहम्
I endure unbearable pains and words that pierce the heart, and I tolerate living among the rākṣasas for your sake.
धारयिष्यामि मासं तु जीवितं शत्रुसूदन। मासादूर्ध्वं न जीविष्ये त्वया हीना नृपात्मज
O destroyer of enemies, I will sustain my life for one month; after a month, deprived of you, O prince, I will not live.
घोरो राक्षसराजोऽयं दृष्टिश्च न सुखा मयि। त्वां च श्रुत्वा विषज्जन्तं न जीवेयमपि क्षणम्
This dreadful king of the rākṣasas is here, and his gaze is not pleasant to me; and if I hear that you have become despondent, I would not live even for a moment.
वैदेह्या वचनं श्रुत्वा करुणं साश्रुभाषितम्। अथाब्रवीन्महातेजा हनूमान् मारुतात्मजः
Hearing Vaidehī’s words, spoken with tears and full of sorrow, the mighty Hanuman, son of the Wind, then spoke.
त्वच्छोकविमुखो रामो देवि सत्येन ते शपे। रामे शोकाभिभूते तु लक्ष्मणः परितप्यते
O lady, by truth I swear to you: Rāma is turned away from all joy because of your sorrow; and when Rāma is overwhelmed by grief, Lakṣmaṇa too is tormented.
दृष्टा कथंचिद् भवती न कालः परिदेवितुम्। इमं मुहूर्तं दुःखानामन्तं द्रक्ष्यसि भामिनि
By some fortune you have been found; now is not the time for lamentation. O noble lady, in this very moment you will see an end to your sorrows.
तावुभौ पुरुषव्याघ्रौ राजपुत्रावनिन्दितौ। त्वद्दर्शनकृतोत्साहौ लङ्कां भस्मीकरिष्यतः
Those two tigers among men, the blameless princes, eager for your sight, will reduce Laṅkā to ashes.
हत्वा तु समरे रक्षो रावणं सहबान्धवैः। राघवौ त्वां विशालाक्षि स्वां पुरीं प्रति नेष्यतः
Having slain Rāvaṇa, the rākṣasa, in battle along with his kinsmen, the two Rāghavas will lead you, wide-eyed one, back to their own city.
यत्तु रामो विजानीयादभिज्ञानमनिन्दिते। प्रीतिसंजननं भूयस्तस्य त्वं दातुमर्हसि
O blameless one, you should give Rāma a token of recognition, so that he may know and be gladdened all the more.
साब्रवीद् दत्तमेवाहो मयाभिज्ञानमुत्तमम्। एतदेव हि रामस्य दृष्ट्वा यत्नेन भूषणम्
She replied, 'I have already given an excellent token of recognition; for this very ornament, carefully preserved, is what Rāma will see.'
श्रद्धेयं हनुमन् वाक्यं तव वीर भविष्यति। स तं मणिवरं गृह्य श्रीमान् प्लवगसत्तमः
O hero Hanuman, your words will be trusted; then the illustrious best of monkeys took that precious jewel.
प्रणम्य शिरसा देवीं गमनायोपचक्रमे। तमुत्पातकृतोत्साहमवेक्ष्य हरियूथपम्
Bowing his head to the lady, he prepared to depart; seeing the monkey chief eager to leap away,
वर्धमानं महावेगमुवाच जनकात्मजा। अश्रुपूर्णमुखी दीना बाष्पगद्गदया गिरा
The daughter of Janaka, her face full of tears, distressed, spoke to him with a voice choked by weeping, as his speed and vigor grew.
हनूमन् सिंहसंकाशौ भ्रातरौ रामलक्ष्मणौ। सुग्रीवं च सहामात्यं सर्वान् ब्रूया अनामयम्
Hanuman, you must convey my well-being to the lion-like brothers Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa, and to Sugrīva with his ministers, all of them.
यथा च स महाबाहुर्मां तारयति राघवः। अस्माद् दुःखाम्बुसंरोधात् त्वं समाधातुमर्हसि
And as Rāghava, the mighty-armed one, rescues me from this flood of sorrow, you must arrange for that to happen.
इदं च तीव्रं मम शोकवेगं रक्षोभिरेभिः परिभर्त्सनं च। ब्रूयास्तु रामस्य गतः समीपं शिवश्च तेऽध्वास्तु हरिप्रवीर
When you reach Rāma, tell him of this intense rush of my grief and the insults I have suffered from these rākṣasas; and may your journey be auspicious, O best of monkeys.
स राजपुत्र्या प्रतिवेदितार्थः कपिः कृतार्थः परिहृष्टचेताः। तदल्पशेषं प्रसमीक्ष्य कार्यं दिशं ह्युदीचीं मनसा जगाम
Having been informed of her message, the monkey, his purpose accomplished and his heart rejoicing, having considered the little that remained to be done, set his mind toward the northern direction.

This task is nearly complete, now that I have seen the dark-eyed woman; having exhausted three methods, a fourth appears here.
न साम रक्षःसु गुणाय कल्पते न दानमर्थोपचितेषु युज्यते। न भेदसाध्या बलदर्पिता जनाः पराक्रमस्त्वेष ममेह रोचते
Conciliation does not suit the nature of the demons; gifts are not appropriate for those who are wealthy; those intoxicated by power cannot be won by division; but force, this alone appeals to me here.
न चास्य कार्यस्य पराक्रमादृते विनिश्चयः कश्चिदिहोपपद्यते। हतप्रवीराश्च रणे तु राक्षसाः कथंचिदीयुर्यदिहाद्य मार्दवम्
For this task, apart from force, no other resolution is possible here; if the demons are slain in battle, perhaps today they might show some softness.
कार्ये कर्मणि निर्वृत्ते यो बहून्यपि साधयेत्। पूर्वकार्याविरोधेन स कार्यं कर्तुमर्हति
He who accomplishes many tasks without hindering previous ones is fit to undertake the work at hand.
न ह्येकः साधको हेतुः स्वल्पस्यापीह कर्मणः। यो ह्यर्थं बहुधा वेद स समर्थोऽर्थसाधने
No single cause suffices even for a small action here; he who knows the matter in many ways is capable of accomplishing it.
इहैव तावत्कृतनिश्चयो ह्यहं व्रजेयमद्य प्लवगेश्वरालयम्। परात्मसम्मर्दविशेषतत्त्ववित् ततः कृतं स्यान्मम भर्तृशासनम्
Here and now, having made up my mind, I shall go today to the abode of the monkey king; knowing the true nature of conflict with others, then my master's command will be fulfilled.
कथं नु खल्वद्य भवेत् सुखागतं प्रसह्य युद्धं मम राक्षसैः सह। तथैव खल्वात्मबलं च सारवत् समानयेन्मां च रणे दशाननः
How indeed today will a direct battle with the demons come about favorably for me? In the same way, let my own strength be brought forth, and let Rāvaṇa meet me in battle.
