मणिवरमुपगृह्य तं महार्हं जनकनृपात्मजया धृतं प्रभावात्। गिरिवरपवनावधूतमुक्तः सुखितमनाः प्रतिसंक्रमं प्रपेदे
Taking up that most precious jewel, held by the daughter of King Janaka, released from her hair and shaken by the mountain wind, with a happy mind he set out to return.

Let the thirty-ninth chapter be heard in the glorious Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa, in the Sundara Kāṇḍa.
मणिं दत्त्वा ततः सीता हनूमन्तमथाब्रवीत्। अभिज्ञानमभिज्ञातमेतद् रामस्य तत्त्वतः
Then, giving the jewel, Sītā spoke to Hanumān: 'This is a token of recognition, truly known to Rāma.'
मणिं दृष्ट्वा तु रामो वै त्रयाणां संस्मरिष्यति। वीरो जनन्या मम च राज्ञो दशरथस्य च
On seeing the jewel, Rāma will remember three: the hero, my mother, and King Daśaratha.
स भूयस्त्वं समुत्साहचोदितो हरिसत्तम। अस्मिन् कार्यसमुत्साहे प्रचिन्तय यदुत्तरम्
Therefore, urged on by enthusiasm, you, best of monkeys, consider what further can be done in this effort.
त्वमस्मिन् कार्यनिर्योगे प्रमाणं हरिसत्तम। तस्य चिन्तय यो यत्नो दुःखक्षयकरो भवेत्
You are the authority in the accomplishment of this task, O best of monkeys; consider what effort would bring an end to sorrow.
हनूमन् यत्नमास्थाय दुःखक्षयकरो भव। स तथेति प्रतिज्ञाय मारुतिर्भीमविक्रमः
Hanumān, take up effort and become the remover of sorrow; and the wind-god’s mighty son, having promised so, agreed.
शिरसाऽऽवन्द्य वैदेहीं गमनायोपचक्रमे। ज्ञात्वा सम्प्रस्थितं देवी वानरं पवनात्मजम्
Bowing his head to Vaidehī, he prepared to depart; knowing the monkey, son of the wind, was setting out, the lady understood.
बाष्पगद्गदया वाचा मैथिली वाक्यमब्रवीत्। हनूमन् कुशलं ब्रूयाः सहितौ रामलक्ष्मणौ
With a voice choked by tears, Maithilī spoke these words: 'Hanumān, convey my well-being to Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa together.'
सुग्रीवं च सहामात्यं सर्वान् वृद्धांश्च वानरान्। ब्रूयास्त्वं वानरश्रेष्ठ कुशलं धर्मसंहितम्
O best of the monkeys, you should convey my respectful and righteous greetings to Sugriva, his ministers, and all the elder vanaras.
यथा च स महाबाहुर्मां तारयति राघवः। अस्माद् दुःखाम्बुसंरोधात् त्वं समाधातुमर्हसि
And just as the mighty-armed Raghava will rescue me from this flood of sorrow, so too should you strive to bring this about.
जीवन्तीं मां यथा रामः सम्भावयति कीर्तिमान्। तत् त्वया हनुमन् वाच्यं वाचा धर्ममवाप्नुहि
Hanuman, you must tell Rama, renowned for his virtue, that I am still alive; speak these words, and by doing so, uphold righteousness.
नित्यमुत्साहयुक्तस्य वाचः श्रुत्वा मयेरिताः। वर्धिष्यते दाशरथेः पौरुषं मदवाप्तये
Hearing these words from me, always filled with hope, will increase the resolve of Dasharatha’s son to achieve my deliverance.
मत्संदेशयुता वाचस्त्वत्तः श्रुत्वैव राघवः। पराक्रमे मतिं वीरो विधिवत् संविधास्यति
Upon hearing your words, bearing my message, the heroic Raghava will firmly set his mind on valor, as is proper.
सीतायास्तद् वचः श्रुत्वा हनूमान् मारुतात्मजः। शिरस्यञ्जलिमाधाय वाक्यमुत्तरमब्रवीत्
Hearing Sita’s words, Hanuman, son of the Wind, placed his joined palms upon his head and gave this reply.
क्षिप्रमेष्यति काकुत्स्थो हर्यृक्षप्रवरैर्वृतः। यस्ते युधि विजित्यारीन् शोकं व्यपनयिष्यति
Soon Rama, surrounded by the foremost of monkeys and bears, will come and, having conquered his enemies in battle, will remove your sorrow.
नहि पश्यामि मर्त्येषु नासुरेषु सुरेषु वा। यस्तस्य वमतो बाणान् स्थातुमुत्सहतेऽग्रतः
I see no one among mortals, nor among asuras or gods, who can stand before him when he releases his arrows.
अप्यर्कमपि पर्जन्यमपि वैवस्वतं यमम्। स हि सोढुं रणे शक्तस्तव हेतोर्विशेषतः
He is able to withstand even the sun, the rain-god, or Yama, the lord of death, especially for your sake, in battle.
स हि सागरपर्यन्तां महीं साधितुमर्हति। त्वन्निमित्तो हि रामस्य जयो जनकनन्दिनि
Indeed, he is capable of conquering the earth bounded by the ocean; for your sake, O daughter of Janaka, Rama’s victory is assured.
तस्य तद् वचनं श्रुत्वा सम्यक् सत्यं सुभाषितम्। जानकी बहु मेने तं वचनं चेदमब्रवीत्
Hearing these words, true and well spoken, Sita esteemed them greatly and spoke these further words.
ततस्तं प्रस्थितं सीता वीक्षमाणा पुनः पुनः। भर्तृस्नेहान्वितं वाक्यं सौहार्दादनुमानयत्
Then Sita, gazing again and again at Hanuman as he prepared to depart, inferred from his words the deep affection he bore for her husband.
यदि वा मन्यसे वीर वसैकाहमरिंदम। कस्मिंश्चित् संवृते देशे विश्रान्तः श्वो गमिष्यसि
If you think it proper, O hero, stay here for a single day in some hidden place; rest, and depart tomorrow.
मम चैवाल्पभाग्यायाः सांनिध्यात् तव वानर। अस्य शोकस्य महतो मुहूर्तं मोक्षणं भवेत्
For me, so unfortunate, your presence, O monkey, would grant a brief release from this great sorrow.
ततो हि हरिशार्दूल पुनरागमनाय तु। प्राणानामपि संदेहो मम स्यान्नात्र संशयः
But, O tiger among monkeys, if you delay your return, I have no doubt there would be danger even to my life.
तवादर्शनजः शोको भूयो मां परितापयेत्। दुःखादुःखपरामृष्टां दीपयन्निव वानर
The sorrow caused by your absence would again torment me, O monkey, intensifying my pain upon pain.
अयं च वीर संदेहस्तिष्ठतीव ममाग्रतः। सुमहांस्त्वत्सहायेषु हर्यृक्षेषु हरीश्वर
And, O lord of monkeys, a great doubt stands before me regarding the monkeys and bears who are your allies.
कथं नु खलु दुष्पारं तरिष्यन्ति महोदधिम्। तानि हर्यृक्षसैन्यानि तौ वा नरवरात्मजौ
How indeed will those armies of monkeys and bears, or those two sons of the best of men, cross the vast and impassable ocean?
त्रयाणामेव भूतानां सागरस्येह लङ्घने। शक्तिः स्याद् वैनतेयस्य तव वा मारुतस्य वा
Of all beings, only three possess the power to cross this ocean: Garuda, yourself, or the Wind-god.
तदस्मिन् कार्यनिर्योगे वीरैवं दुरतिक्रमे। किं पश्यसे समाधानं त्वं हि कार्यविदां वरः
Therefore, O hero, in this task that is so difficult to accomplish, what solution do you see? For you are the foremost among those who know how to achieve their aims.
काममस्य त्वमेवैकः कार्यस्य परिसाधने। पर्याप्तः परवीरघ्न यशस्यस्ते फलोदयः
Indeed, you alone are sufficient to accomplish this task, O destroyer of enemy heroes; your renowned success is the fruit of your deeds.
