Nor am I able to go with you, O destroyer of enemies; there would certainly be doubt about you, since you have a wife.
Seeing me being carried away, the fierce and mighty rākṣasas, commanded by the wicked Rāvaṇa, would pursue us.
Surrounded by those warriors, armed with spears and maces, you would be in danger, O hero, because you have a wife with you.
Many rākṣasas, armed, would be in the sky, while you are unarmed; how could you fight and protect me at the same time?
While you are fighting those rākṣasas, cruel in their actions, I would fall from your back, terrified, O best of monkeys.
Or, O best of monkeys, those fierce, mighty rākṣasas might somehow defeat you in battle.
Or, while you are fighting and turn away, I might fall; then the wicked rākṣasas would seize me and take me away.
Either they would snatch me from your hand or kill me; for in battle, both victory and defeat are seen as uncertain.
Or I might perish, threatened by the rākṣasas; your effort, O best of monkeys, would be entirely fruitless.
Indeed, you are fully capable of destroying all the rākṣasas; yet, the fame of Rāghava would diminish if the rākṣasas were slain by you.
Alternatively, having taken the rākṣasas, they might conceal me somewhere, where neither the monkeys nor Rāghava would know.
This effort undertaken for my sake would then become futile for you; for the great merit lies in Rāma's arrival together with you.
My life is dependent on Rāghava, of immeasurable strength, on his brothers, mighty-armed, and on your royal lineage.
Those two, despairing for my sake and worn down by grief and sorrow, along with all the monkeys and bears, would abandon the preservation of their lives.
Having placed devotion to my husband foremost, O monkey, I do not wish to touch another's body besides Rāma, O best of monkeys.
That I was forcibly subjected to Rāvaṇa's touch—being powerless, what could I do, helpless and bereft of protection?
If Rāma, slaying the ten-headed one here along with all the rākṣasas, were to take me from here and depart, that would be fitting for him.
I have heard and seen the valor of that great-souled one, the crusher of enemies in battle; neither gods, Gandharvas, serpents, nor rākṣasas are equal to Rāma in combat.
Considering him in battle, with his splendid bow, immense strength, and prowess equal to Indra, who could withstand Rāghava with Lakṣmaṇa, like blazing fire driven by the wind?
Who, O chief of monkeys, could withstand Rāghava with Lakṣmaṇa, the crusher of armies, standing like a maddened elephant of the directions, whose arrows shine like the sun at the end of an age, in battle?
Therefore, O foremost monkey, swiftly bring to me here Rāghava with Lakṣmaṇa, my beloved, together with the chiefs; for long I have been worn by sorrow for Rāma—make me, O heroic monkey, joyful.
Let the thirty-eighth sarga be heard in the glorious Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa, Sundara Kāṇḍa, sarga thirty-eight.
Then that tiger among monkeys, pleased by those words, addressed Sītā, having heard her speech, being skilled in words.
What you have spoken, O goddess of auspicious appearance, is appropriate; it is fitting for the nature of women, for virtuous wives, and for modesty.
Because you are a woman, you are not able to cross the ocean, vast and stretching a hundred yojanas, relying on me.
The second reason you mention, O Janaki, endowed with modesty—that you are not fit for contact with anyone other than Rāma—
This, O goddess, is fitting for you, the wife of that great-souled one; who else but you, O goddess, would speak such words?
Kākutstha will hear everything in full detail—what you have done, O lady, and what you have spoken before me.
For many reasons, O lady, out of the wish to please Rāma, with a mind overflowing with affection, I have spoken this.
Because entry into Laṅkā is difficult, the great ocean is hard to cross, and due to my own ability, I have spoken this.
