आदिष्टा वानरेन्द्रेण सुग्रीवेण महौजसः। अद्रिराजप्रतीकाशाः सर्वतः प्रस्थिता महीम्
Commanded by the powerful king of the monkeys, Sugrīva, those who resembled mountains set out in all directions across the earth.
ततस्ते मार्गमाणा वै सुग्रीववचनातुराः। चरन्ति वसुधां कृत्स्नां वयमन्ये च वानराः
Thus, following Sugrīva's command, we and other monkeys, eager to fulfill his words, search the entire earth.
अङ्गदो नाम लक्ष्मीवान् वालिसूनुर्महाबलः। प्रस्थितः कपिशार्दूलस्त्रिभागबलसंवृतः
Among us, there is Aṅgada, the illustrious and mighty son of Vāli, a tiger among monkeys, who set out accompanied by a third of the army's strength.
तेषां नो विप्रणष्टानां विन्ध्ये पर्वतसत्तमे। भृशं शोकपरीतानामहोरात्रगणा गताः
For us, who were lost and overwhelmed by grief, many days and nights passed on the best of mountains, the Vindhya.
ते वयं कार्यनैराश्यात् कालस्यातिक्रमेण च। भयाच्च कपिराजस्य प्राणांस्त्यक्तुमुपस्थिताः
We, despairing of our task and as time slipped away, and out of fear of the monkey king, were ready to give up our lives.
विचित्य गिरिदुर्गाणि नदीप्रस्रवणानि च। अनासाद्य पदं देव्याः प्राणांस्त्यक्तुं व्यवस्थिताः
Having searched the mountain strongholds and river sources, and not finding any trace of you, O queen, we resolved to give up our lives.
ततस्तस्य गिरेर्मूर्ध्नि वयं प्रायमुपास्महे। दृष्ट्वा प्रायोपविष्टांश्च सर्वान् वानरपुङ्गवान्
Then, on the summit of that mountain, we undertook a fast unto death, seeing all the foremost monkeys seated for the same purpose.
भृशं शोकार्णवे मग्नः पर्यदेवयदङ्गदः। तव नाशं च वैदेहि वालिनश्च तथा वधम्
Immersed in a sea of sorrow, Aṅgada lamented deeply—over your loss, O Vaidehī, and also over the death of Vāli.
प्रायोपवेशमस्माकं मरणं च जटायुषः। तेषां नः स्वामिसंदेशान्निराशानां मुमूर्षताम्
Our resolve was to fast unto death, just as Jaṭāyu had died; for us, hopeless and wishing to die, this was the command of our lord.
कार्यहेतोरिहायातः शकुनिर्वीर्यवान् महान्। गृध्रराजस्य सोदर्यः सम्पातिर्नाम गृध्रराट्
Then, for the sake of our mission, there came a great and mighty bird, Sampāti by name, the heroic king of vultures and brother of the vulture king.
श्रुत्वा भ्रातृवधं कोपादिदं वचनमब्रवीत्। यवीयान् केन मे भ्राता हतः क्व च निपातितः
Hearing of his brother's death, he spoke these words in anger: 'By whom was my younger brother killed, and where did he fall?'
एतदाख्यातुमिच्छामि भवद्भिर्वानरोत्तमाः। अङ्गदोऽकथयत् तस्य जनस्थाने महद्वधम्
'I wish to hear this from you, O best of monkeys,' he said; and Aṅgada told him of the great killing at Janasthāna.
रक्षसा भीमरूपेण त्वामुद्दिश्य यथार्थतः। जटायोस्तु वधं श्रुत्वा दुःखितः सोऽरुणात्मजः
Hearing of Jaṭāyu's death at the hands of a fearsome demon, for your sake and exactly as it happened, that son of Aruṇa was filled with grief.
त्वामाह स वरारोहे वसन्तीं रावणालये। तस्य तद् वचनं श्रुत्वा सम्पातेः प्रीतिवर्धनम्
He spoke to you, O lady of beautiful form, as you dwelt in Rāvaṇa's abode; hearing those words of his brought great joy to Sampāti.
अङ्गदप्रमुखाः सर्वे ततः प्रस्थापिता वयम्। विन्ध्यादुत्थाय सम्प्राप्ताः सागरस्यान्तमुत्तमम्
Then, under Aṅgada's leadership, we were all sent forth; rising from the Vindhya mountains, we reached the excellent shore of the ocean.
त्वद्दर्शने कृतोत्साहा हृष्टाः पुष्टाः प्लवङ्गमाः। अङ्गदप्रमुखाः सर्वे वेलोपान्तमुपागताः
Eager for your sight, delighted and strengthened, all the monkeys led by Aṅgada arrived at the edge of the shore.
चिन्तां जग्मुः पुनर्भीमां त्वद्दर्शनसमुत्सुकाः। अथाहं हरिसैन्यस्य सागरं दृश्य सीदतः
But, longing to see you, they again fell into great anxiety; then I, seeing the monkey army sitting by the ocean,
व्यवधूय भयं तीव्रं योजनानां शतं प्लुतः। लङ्का चापि मया रात्रौ प्रविष्टा राक्षसाकुला
Casting aside intense fear, I leapt a hundred yojanas; and at night I entered Laṅkā, crowded with rākṣasas.
रावणश्च मया दृष्टस्त्वं च शोकनिपीडिता। एतत् ते सर्वमाख्यातं यथावृत्तमनिन्दिते
I saw Rāvaṇa, and you, afflicted by sorrow; O faultless one, all this I have told you exactly as it happened.
अभिभाषस्व मां देवि दूतो दाशरथेरहम्। तन्मां रामकृतोद्योगं त्वन्निमित्तमिहागतम्
Speak to me, O lady, for I am the messenger of Daśaratha's son; it is for you that Rāma has made this effort, and I have come here.
सुग्रीवसचिवं देवि बुद्ध्यस्व पवनात्मजम्। कुशली तव काकुत्स्थः सर्वशस्त्रभृतां वरः
Know me, O lady, as Sugrīva's minister, the son of the wind; your husband, the best among all wielders of weapons, is safe.
गुरोराराधने युक्तो लक्ष्मणः शुभलक्षणः। तस्य वीर्यवतो देवि भर्तुस्तव हिते रतः
Lakṣmaṇa, of auspicious marks, is devoted to serving his elder; O lady, he is intent on the welfare of your mighty husband.
अहमेकस्तु सम्प्राप्तः सुग्रीववचनादिह। मयेयमसहायेन चरता कामरूपिणा
But I alone have come here, sent by Sugrīva's command; I have wandered here, unaided, in whatever form I wished.
दक्षिणा दिगनुक्रान्ता त्वन्मार्गविचयैषिणा। दिष्ट्याहं हरिसैन्यानां त्वन्नाशमनुशोचताम्
I traversed the southern direction, seeking your path; by fortune, I found the monkey army, who were grieving for your loss.
अपनेष्यामि संतापं तवाधिगमशासनात्। दिष्ट्या हि न मम व्यर्थं सागरस्येह लङ्घनम्
I will remove your distress, having received the command to find you; by good fortune, my crossing of the ocean here has not been in vain.
प्राप्स्याम्यहमिदं देवि त्वद्दर्शनकृतं यशः। राघवश्च महावीर्यः क्षिप्रं त्वामभिपत्स्यते
I shall attain this fame, O lady, for having seen you; and Rāghava, of great might, will soon come to you.
सपुत्रबान्धवं हत्वा रावणं राक्षसाधिपम्। माल्यवान् नाम वैदेहि गिरीणामुत्तमो गिरिः
Having slain Rāvaṇa, lord of the rākṣasas, along with his sons and kinsmen—O Vaidehī, there is a mountain named Mālyavān, the best of mountains.
ततो गच्छति गोकर्णं पर्वतं केसरी हरिः। स च देवर्षिभिर्दिष्टः पिता मम महाकपिः। तीर्थे नदीपतेः पुण्ये शम्बसादनमुद्धरन्
From there, the monkey Kesari, my father, went to the mountain Gokarṇa; directed by the divine sages, he restored the holy abode of Śambhu at the sacred ford of the lord of rivers.
यस्याहं हरिणः क्षेत्रे जातो वातेन मैथिलि। हनूमानिति विख्यातो लोके स्वेनैव कर्मणा
O Maithilī, in that place of the monkeys I was born by the wind; I am known in the world as Hanumān, by my own deeds.
विश्वासार्थं तु वैदेहि भर्तुरुक्ता मया गुणाः। अचिरात् त्वामितो देवि राघवो नयिता ध्रुवम्
O Vaidehī, I have spoken of your husband's virtues to inspire your trust; soon, O lady, Rāghava will surely bring you from here.
