ददर्शतुर्मृगपतिं पूर्वजेनावरोपितम्। ऋष्यमूकस्य मूले तु बहुपादपसंकुले
They saw the lord of beasts, placed there by previous destiny, at the foot of Ṛṣyamūka, amidst a dense cluster of trees.
भ्रातुर्भयार्तमासीनं सुग्रीवं प्रियदर्शनम्। वयं च हरिराजं तं सुग्रीवं सत्यसङ्गरम्
They saw Sugrīva, seated in fear of his brother, pleasing to behold; and we too, the monkey king Sugrīva, steadfast in truth.
परिचर्यामहे राज्यात् पूर्वजेनावरोपितम्। ततस्तौ चीरवसनौ धनुःप्रवरपाणिनौ
We serve the kingdom, established by previous destiny; then those two, clad in bark garments, holding excellent bows in their hands.
ऋष्यमूकस्य शैलस्य रम्यं देशमुपागतौ। स तौ दृष्ट्वा नरव्याघ्रौ धन्विनौ वानरर्षभः
They approached the delightful region of Ṛṣyamūka mountain; seeing those two tigers among men, armed with bows, the foremost monkey.
अभिप्लुतो गिरेस्तस्य शिखरं भयमोहितः। ततः स शिखरे तस्मिन् वानरेन्द्रो व्यवस्थितः
He leapt onto the peak of that mountain, bewildered by fear; then, on that summit, the monkey king remained.
तयोः समीपं मामेव प्रेषयामास सत्वरम्। तावहं पुरुषव्याघ्रौ सुग्रीववचनात् प्रभू
He quickly sent me alone to their vicinity; so I, at Sugrīva's command, approached those two tigers among men.
रूपलक्षणसम्पन्नौ कृताञ्जलिरुपस्थितः। तौ परिज्ञाततत्त्वार्थौ मया प्रीतिसमन्वितौ
Endowed with beauty and auspicious marks, with joined palms, they stood before me; and I, recognizing their true nature, was filled with affection.
पृष्ठमारोप्य तं देशं प्रापितौ पुरुषर्षभौ। निवेदितौ च तत्त्वेन सुग्रीवाय महात्मने
Having mounted upon their backs, those foremost of men were brought to that place, and were presented in truth to the great-souled Sugriva.
तयोरन्योन्यसम्भाषाद् भृशं प्रीतिरजायत। तत्र तौ कीर्तिसम्पन्नौ हरीश्वरनरेश्वरौ
From the mutual conversation between the two, a deep affection arose; there, those two, renowned, the lord of monkeys and the lord of men.
परस्परकृताश्वासौ कथया पूर्ववृत्तया। तं ततः सान्त्वयामास सुग्रीवं लक्ष्मणाग्रजः
Comforting each other, they spoke of past events; then, Rama, elder brother of Lakshmana, consoled Sugriva.
स्त्रीहेतोर्वालिना भ्रात्रा निरस्तं पुरुतेजसा। ततस्त्वन्नाशजं शोकं रामस्याक्लिष्टकर्मणः
Driven out by his brother Vali, because of a woman, with great power; then, the grief born from your loss afflicted Rama, whose deeds are flawless.
लक्ष्मणो वानरेन्द्राय सुग्रीवाय न्यवेदयत्। स श्रुत्वा वानरेन्द्रस्तु लक्ष्मणेनेरितं वचः
Lakshmana reported to the king of monkeys, Sugriva; and the monkey king, having heard the words spoken by Lakshmana,
तदासीन्निष्प्रभोऽत्यर्थं ग्रहग्रस्त इवांशुमान्। ततस्त्वद्गात्रशोभीनि रक्षसा ह्रियमाणया
At that time, he was exceedingly without radiance, like the sun seized by a planet; then, adorned with your ornaments, taken by the demon,
यान्याभरणजालानि पातितानि महीतले। तानि सर्वाणि रामाय आनीय हरियूथपाः
All those garlanded ornaments that were dropped upon the earth; the leaders of the monkey troops brought them all to Rama.
संहृष्टा दर्शयामासुर्गतिं तु न विदुस्तव। तानि रामाय दत्तानि मयैवोपहृतानि च
Joyful, they showed them, but did not know your path; those were given to Rama, and I myself brought them.
स्वनवन्त्यवकीर्णानि तस्मिन् विहतचेतसि। तान्यङ्के दर्शनीयानि कृत्वा बहुविधं तदा
Resounding, scattered, while his mind was distressed; then, having placed those beautiful ornaments upon his lap, he gazed at them in many ways.
तेन देवप्रकाशेन देवेन परिदेवितम्। पश्यतस्तानि रुदतस्ताम्यतश्च पुनः पुनः
With that divine radiance, by the god, he lamented; gazing at those, weeping, suffering again and again.
प्रादीपयद् दाशरथेस्तदा शोकहुताशनम्
At that time, the son of Dasharatha kindled the fire of grief.
शायितं च चिरं तेन दुःखार्तेन महात्मना। मयापि विविधैर्वाक्यैः कृच्छ्रादुत्थापितः पुनः
He lay for a long time, overwhelmed by sorrow, that great soul; and I, with various words, with difficulty raised him again.
तानि दृष्ट्वा महार्हाणि दर्शयित्वा मुहुर्मुहुः। राघवः सहसौमित्रिः सुग्रीवे संन्यवेशयत्
Having seen those precious ornaments, showing them again and again; Raghava, together with Saumitri, entrusted them to Sugriva.
स तवादर्शनादार्ये राघवः परितप्यते। महता ज्वलता नित्यमग्निनेवाग्निपर्वतः
Because of not seeing you, noble lady, Raghava is tormented; always burning with great fire, like a mountain of fire.
त्वत्कृते तमनिद्रा च शोकश्चिन्ता च राघवम्। तापयन्ति महात्मानमग्न्यगारमिवाग्नयः
For your sake, sleeplessness, grief, and anxiety afflict Raghava, the great soul, like fires in a house of fire.
तवादर्शनशोकेन राघवः परिचाल्यते। महता भूमिकम्पेन महानिव शिलोच्चयः
Because of the sorrow of not seeing you, Raghava is shaken; like a great mountain by a mighty earthquake.
काननानि सुरम्याणि नदीप्रस्रवणानि च। चरन् न रतिमाप्नोति त्वामपश्यन् नृपात्मजे
Roaming through delightful forests and river springs, he finds no pleasure, not seeing you, O princess.
स त्वां मनुजशार्दूलः क्षिप्रं प्राप्स्यति राघवः। समित्रबान्धवं हत्वा रावणं जनकात्मजे
That tiger among men, Raghava, will soon reach you, O daughter of Janaka, after slaying Ravana with his friends and kinsmen.
सहितौ रामसुग्रीवावुभावकुरुतां तदा। समयं वालिनं हन्तुं तव चान्वेषणं प्रति
Then, together, Rāma and Sugrīva made an agreement: to kill Vāli and to search for you.
ततस्ताभ्यां कुमाराभ्यां वीराभ्यां स हरीश्वरः। किष्किन्धां समुपागम्य वाली युद्धे निपातितः
After that, the lord of the monkeys, accompanied by those two heroic princes, approached Kiṣkindhā, and Vāli was slain in battle.
ततो निहत्य तरसा रामो वालिनमाहवे। सर्वर्क्षहरिसङ्घानां सुग्रीवमकरोत् पतिम्
Then Rāma, having swiftly killed Vāli in combat, made Sugrīva the lord of all the troops of monkeys and bears.
रामसुग्रीवयोरैक्यं देव्येवं समजायत। हनूमन्तं च मां विद्धि तयोर्दूतमुपागतम्
Thus, O queen, the alliance of Rāma and Sugrīva was formed; know me, Hanumān, as the messenger who came on their behalf.
स्वं राज्यं प्राप्य सुग्रीवः स्वानानीय महाकपीन्। त्वदर्थं प्रेषयामास दिशो दश महाबलान्
Having regained his own kingdom, Sugrīva summoned the great monkeys and sent mighty ones in all ten directions for your sake.
