एष दोषो महान् हि स्यान्मम सीताभिभाषणे। प्राणत्यागश्च वैदेह्या भवेदनभिभाषणे
This would be a great fault indeed if I speak to Sita; but if I do not speak, Vaidehi might give up her life.
भूताश्चार्था विरुध्यन्त देशकालविरोधिताः। विक्लवं दूतमासाद्य तमः सूर्योदये यथा
And the intended purposes, opposed by place and time, are thwarted, just as darkness is dispelled at sunrise when a messenger is met with confusion.
अर्थानर्थान्तरे बुद्धिर्निश्चितापि न शोभते। घातयन्ति हि कार्याणि दूताः पण्डितमानिनः
Even a well-considered plan does not succeed when it leads to harm instead of benefit; for messengers who consider themselves wise often ruin the mission.
न विनश्येत् कथं कार्यं वैक्लव्यं न कथं मम। लङ्घनं च समुद्रस्य कथं नु न वृथा भवेत्
How might the task not fail, how might I not become disheartened, and how might my crossing of the ocean not be in vain?
कथं नु खलु वाक्यं मे शृणुयान्नोद्विजेत च। इति संचिन्त्य हनुमांश्चकार मतिमान् मतिम्
How indeed might she hear my words and not be alarmed? Thus reflecting, Hanuman, the wise one, formed his plan.
राममक्लिष्टकर्माणं सुबन्धुमनुकीर्तयन्। नैनामुद्वेजयिष्यामि तद्बन्धुगतचेतनाम्
By praising Rama, whose actions are blameless and who is steadfast, I will not frighten her, whose mind is bound by sorrow.
इक्ष्वाकूणां वरिष्ठस्य रामस्य विदितात्मनः। शुभानि धर्मयुक्तानि वचनानि समर्पयन्
I will present auspicious and righteous words about Rama, the foremost of the Ikshvakus, who knows himself.
श्रावयिष्यामि सर्वाणि मधुरां प्रब्रुवन् गिरम्। श्रद्धास्यति यथा सीता तथा सर्वं समादधे
I will make her hear everything, speaking sweet words; so that Sita may believe, I will arrange everything accordingly.
इति स बहुविधं महाप्रभावो जगतिपतेः प्रमदामवेक्षमाणः। मधुरमवितथं जगाद वाक्यं द्रुमविटपान्तरमास्थितो हनूमान्
Thus, Hanuman, of great might, observing the lady of the lord of the world, spoke sweet and truthful words, stationed within the branches of a tree.

Hear now the thirty-first sarga in the glorious Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa, Sundarakāṇḍa.
एवं बहुविधां चिन्तां चिन्तयित्वा महामतिः। संश्रवे मधुरं वाक्यं वैदेह्या व्याजहार ह
Having considered many kinds of thoughts, the wise one spoke sweet words to Vaidehī, so that she might hear.
राजा दशरथो नाम रथकुञ्जरवाजिमान्। पुण्यशीलो महाकीर्तिरिक्ष्वाकूणां महायशाः
There was a king named Dasharatha, possessing chariots, elephants, and horses, virtuous, of great fame, and renowned among the Ikshvakus.
राजर्षीणां गुणश्रेष्ठस्तपसा चर्षिभिः समः। चक्रवर्तिकुले जातः पुरंदरसमो बले
He excelled in the virtues of royal sages, equal to the great seers in austerity, born in the line of emperors, and in strength like Indra.
अहिंसारतिरक्षुद्रो घृणी सत्यपराक्रमः। मुख्यस्येक्ष्वाकुवंशस्य लक्ष्मीवाँल्लक्ष्मिवर्धनः
He delighted in non-violence, was not greedy, was compassionate, and had the courage of truth; he was the chief of the Ikshvaku line, adorned with fortune and increasing prosperity.
पार्थिवव्यञ्जनैर्युक्तः पृथुश्रीः पार्थिवर्षभः। पृथिव्यां चतुरन्तायां विश्रुतः सुखदः सुखी
Endowed with royal marks, possessing great splendor, a bull among kings, he was renowned throughout the four quarters of the earth, a giver of happiness and himself happy.
तस्य पुत्रः प्रियो ज्येष्ठस्ताराधिपनिभाननः। रामो नाम विशेषज्ञः श्रेष्ठः सर्वधनुष्मताम्
His beloved eldest son, whose face was like the moon, was named Rama, discerning and the best among all wielders of the bow.
रक्षिता स्वस्य वृत्तस्य स्वजनस्यापि रक्षिता। रक्षिता जीवलोकस्य धर्मस्य च परंतपः
He protected his own conduct, protected his people, protected all living beings, and was a scorcher of foes, upholding righteousness.
तस्य सत्याभिसंधस्य वृद्धस्य वचनात् पितुः। सभार्यः सह च भ्रात्रा वीरः प्रव्रजितो वनम्
Because of the command of his aged father, who was devoted to truth, the hero went to the forest with his wife and brother.
तेन तत्र महारण्ये मृगयां परिधावता। राक्षसा निहताः शूरा बहवः कामरूपिणः
There, while pursuing the hunt in the great forest, he slew many powerful rakshasas, masters of illusion.
जनस्थानवधं श्रुत्वा निहतौ खरदूषणौ। ततस्त्वमर्षापहृता जानकी रावणेन तु
Hearing of the slaughter at Janasthana and the killing of Khara and Dushana, you, Janaki, were then seized by Ravana in his rage.
वञ्चयित्वा वने रामं मृगरूपेण मायया। स मार्गमाणस्तां देवीं रामः सीतामनिन्दिताम्
Deceiving Rama in the forest by taking the form of a deer through magic, Ravana abducted you while Rama was searching for you, O faultless Sita.
आससाद वने मित्रं सुग्रीवं नाम वानरम्। ततः स वालिनं हत्वा रामः परपुरंजयः
In the forest, he met a friend named Sugriva, a monkey; then Rama, the conqueror of enemy cities, killed Vali.
आयच्छत् कपिराज्यं तु सुग्रीवाय महात्मने। सुग्रीवेणाभिसंदिष्टा हरयः कामरूपिणः
He restored the kingdom of the monkeys to the great-souled Sugriva; and by Sugriva’s command, monkeys with the power to assume any form—
दिक्षु सर्वासु तां देवीं विचिन्वन्तः सहस्रशः। अहं सम्पातिवचनाच्छतयोजनमायतम्
Searched for that goddess in all directions by the thousands; and I, following Sampati’s words, crossed the ocean a hundred yojanas wide.
तस्या हेतोर्विशालाक्ष्याः समुद्रं वेगवान् प्लुतः। यथारूपां यथावर्णां यथालक्ष्मवतीं च ताम्
For the sake of that wide-eyed lady, I swiftly crossed the sea; and I saw her just as she was described, in form, color, and beauty.
अश्रौषं राघवस्याहं सेयमासादिता मया। विररामैवमुक्त्वा स वाचं वानरपुंगवः
I heard from Rama himself that she was found by me; having spoken thus, the foremost of monkeys fell silent.
जानकी चापि तच्छ्रुत्वा विस्मयं परमं गता। ततः सा वक्रकेशान्ता सुकेशी केशसंवृतम्। उन्नम्य वदनं भीरुः शिंशपामन्ववैक्षत
And Janaki, upon hearing this, was filled with the utmost wonder; then, with her hair ending in curls, her beautiful hair covering her, the fearful one raised her face and looked toward the shimshapa tree.
निशम्य सीता वचनं कपेश्च दिशश्च सर्वाः प्रदिशश्च वीक्ष्य। स्वयं प्रहर्षं परमं जगाम सर्वात्मना राममनुस्मरन्ती
Hearing the monkey’s words, and looking in every direction and quarter, Sita herself felt the highest joy, remembering Rama with all her heart.
सा तिर्यगूर्ध्वं च तथा ह्यधस्ता- न्निरीक्षमाणा तमचिन्त्यबुद्धिम्। ददर्श पिंगाधिपतेरमात्यं वातात्मजं सूर्यमिवोदयस्थम्
She, looking sideways, upward, and downward, beheld that minister of the tawny monkey king, the wind-god’s son, like the sun rising in the sky, whose mind is unfathomable.
