मोघो हि धर्मश्चरितो ममायं तथैकपत्नीत्वमिदं निरर्थकम्। या त्वां न पश्यामि कृशा विवर्णा हीना त्वया संगमने निराशा
Indeed, my practice of righteousness has been in vain, and so too this vow of being devoted to one husband is meaningless, since I do not see you—emaciated, discolored, deprived of hope for union with you.
पितुर्निदेशं नियमेन कृत्वा वनान्निवृत्तश्चरितव्रतश्च। स्त्रीभिस्तु मन्ये विपुलेक्षणाभिः संरंस्यसे वीतभयः कृतार्थः
Having strictly fulfilled your father's command and returned from the forest, your vows observed, I think you, fearless and accomplished, will delight in women with wide eyes.
अहं तु राम त्वयि जातकामा चिरं विनाशाय निबद्धभावा। मोघं चरित्वाथ तपो व्रतं च त्यक्ष्यामि धिग्जीवितमल्पभाग्याम्
But I, O Rama, who have set my heart upon you and have long been bound to destruction, having performed austerity and vows in vain, shall abandon this wretched life of little fortune.
संजीवितं क्षिप्रमहं त्यजेयं विषेण शस्त्रेण शितेन वापि। विषस्य दाता न तु मेऽस्ति कश्चि- च्छस्त्रस्य वा वेश्मनि राक्षसस्य
I could quickly give up this revived life by poison or by a sharp weapon, but there is no one here in the house of the rakshasa to give me poison or a weapon.
शोकाभितप्ता बहुधा विचिन्त्य सीताथ वेणीग्रथनं गृहीत्वा। उद्बद्ध्य वेण्युद्ग्रथनेन शीघ्र- महं गमिष्यामि यमस्य मूलम्
Tormented by grief and pondering in many ways, Sita then took her braid in hand, and resolved, 'With this braid, I shall swiftly go to the abode of Yama.'
उपस्थिता सा मृदुसर्वगात्री शाखां गृहीत्वा च नगस्य तस्य। तस्यास्तु रामं परिचिन्तयन्त्या रामानुजं स्वं च कुलं शुभांग्याः
She, whose whole body was soft, approached and grasped a branch of that tree; as she, of auspicious limbs, thought of Rama, his brother, and her own family.
तस्या विशोकानि तदा बहूनि धैर्यार्जितानि प्रवराणि लोके। प्रादुर्निमित्तानि तदा बभूवुः पुरापि सिद्धान्युपलक्षितानि

Of her, the beautiful one, the left eye, with long lashes, encircled by dark and wide white, began to twitch—like a red lotus struck by a fish.
भुजश्च चार्वञ्चितवृत्तपीनः परार्घ्यकालागुरुचन्दनार्हः। अनुत्तमेनाघ्युषितः प्रियेण चिरेण वामः समवेपताशु
Her left arm, lovely, rounded, and full, worthy of the finest aloe and sandal, long unadorned by her beloved, suddenly trembled.
गजेन्द्रहस्तप्रतिमश्च पीन- स्तयोर्द्वयोः संहतयोस्तु जातः। प्रस्पन्दमानः पुनरूरुरस्या रामं पुरस्तात् स्थितमाचचक्षे
And her thigh, thick and joined with the other, resembling the trunk of a lordly elephant, began to quiver, as if indicating Rama standing before her.
शुभं पुनर्हेमसमानवर्ण- मीषद्रजोध्वस्तमिवातुलाक्ष्याः। वासः स्थितायाः शिखराग्रदन्त्याः किंचित् परिस्रंसत चारुगात्र्याः
Again, her garment, golden-hued and slightly soiled with dust, as she stood atop the peak, slipped a little from the body of the graceful one.
एतैर्निमित्तैरपरैश्च सुभ्रूः संचोदिता प्रागपि साधुसिद्धैः। वातातपक्लान्तमिव प्रणष्टं वर्षेण बीजं प्रतिसंजहर्ष
Urged by these and other auspicious signs, and by those previously recognized by the virtuous, she, of beautiful brows, revived like a seed parched by wind and sun is revived by rain.

Freed from sorrow, her weariness dispelled, her fever calmed, her spirit awakened by joy, she shone with her fair face like the night illumined by the rising moon.

I have examined the distinctions among the rakshasas, this city itself, and the power of Ravana, the lord of the rakshasas.
यथा तस्याप्रमेयस्य सर्वसत्त्वदयावतः। समाश्वासयितुं भार्यां पतिदर्शनकांक्षिणीम्
How can I reassure the wife of that immeasurable one, compassionate toward all beings, who longs to see her husband?
अहमाश्वासयाम्येनां पूर्णचन्द्रनिभाननाम्। अदृष्टदुःखां दुःखस्य न ह्यन्तमधिगच्छतीम्
I will comfort her, whose face resembles the full moon, who has never known sorrow, and who cannot find an end to her suffering.
यदि ह्यहं सतीमेनां शोकोपहतचेतनाम्। अनाश्वास्य गमिष्यामि दोषवद् गमनं भवेत्
If I depart without consoling this virtuous woman, whose mind is overwhelmed by grief, my departure would be blameworthy.
गते हि मयि तत्रेयं राजपुत्री यशस्विनी। परित्राणमपश्यन्ती जानकी जीवितं त्यजेत्
If I leave, and this illustrious princess, Janaki, sees no protection, she may abandon her life.
यथा च स महाबाहुः पूर्णचन्द्रनिभाननः। समाश्वासयितुं न्याय्यः सीतादर्शनलालसः
Just as that mighty-armed one, whose face is like the full moon, rightly desires to comfort Sita and longs to see her.
निशाचरीणां प्रत्यक्षमक्षमं चाभिभाषितम्। कथं नु खलु कर्तव्यमिदं कृच्छ्रगतो ह्यहम्
The words spoken openly by the night-dwelling women are intolerable; how indeed should I act in this difficult situation?
अनेन रात्रिशेषेण यदि नाश्वास्यते मया। सर्वथा नास्ति संदेहः परित्यक्ष्यति जीवितम्
If, during the remainder of this night, I do not console her, there is no doubt at all that she will give up her life.
रामस्तु यदि पृच्छेन्मां किं मां सीताब्रवीद्वचः। किमहं तं प्रतिब्रूयामसम्भाष्य सुमध्यमाम्
If Rama asks me, 'What did Sita say to you?'—how could I reply to him, having not spoken with that graceful lady?
