राजहंसप्रतीकाशं छत्रं पूर्णशशिप्रभम्। सौवर्णदण्डमपरा गृहीत्वा पृष्ठतो ययौ
Another, holding behind him a parasol gleaming like the full moon, with a golden handle and resembling a royal swan, followed.
निद्रामदपरीताक्ष्यो रावणस्योत्तमस्त्रियः। अनुजग्मुः पतिं वीरं घनं विद्युल्लता इव
Rāvaṇa’s finest women, their eyes unclouded by sleep or intoxication, followed their heroic lord like lightning trailing a cloud.
व्याविद्धहारकेयूराः समामृदितवर्णकाः। समागलितकेशान्ताः सस्वेदवदनास्तथा
Their necklaces and armlets were askew, their complexions dulled, their hair disheveled, and their faces moist with sweat.
घूर्णन्त्यो मदशेषेण निद्रया च शुभाननाः। स्वेदक्लिष्टांगकुसुमाः समाल्याकुलमूर्धजाः
Swaying from intoxication and drowsiness, their lovely faces glistened with sweat, their garlands wilted, and their hair was tangled with flowers.
स च कामपराधीनः पतिस्तासां महाबलः। सीतासक्तमना मन्दो मन्दाञ्चितगतिर्बभौ
Their mighty lord, enslaved by desire, his mind fixed on Sītā, moved slowly and appeared dull.
ततः काञ्चीनिनादं च नूपुराणां च निःस्वनम्। शुश्राव परमस्त्रीणां कपिर्मारुतनन्दनः
Hanumān, son of the wind, heard the jingling of girdles and the tinkling of anklets from those noble women.
तं चाप्रतिमकर्माणमचिन्त्यबलपौरुषम्। द्वारदेशमनुप्राप्तं ददर्श हनुमान् कपिः
Hanumān saw him—of incomparable deeds and unimaginable strength—approaching the doorway.
दीपिकाभिरनेकाभिः समन्तादवभासितम्। गन्धतैलावसिक्ताभिर्ध्रियमाणाभिरग्रतः
He was surrounded on all sides by many lamps, held in front by women whose bodies were anointed with fragrant oils.
कामदर्पमदैर्युक्तं जिह्मताम्रायतेक्षणम्। समक्षमिव कंदर्पमपविद्धशरासनम्
His eyes were wide, coppery, and sidelong from passion, pride, and intoxication; he looked like Kāmadeva himself, his bow cast aside.
मथितामृतफेनाभमरजोवस्त्रमुत्तमम्। सपुष्पमवकर्षन्तं विमुक्तं सक्तमंगदे
He wore a fine upper garment, white as churned nectar-foam, adorned with flowers, loosened and caught on his armlet.
तं पत्रविटपे लीनः पत्रपुष्पशतावृतः। समीपमुपसंक्रान्तं विज्ञातुमुपचक्रमे
Hidden among the leaves and covered by a hundred leaves and flowers, Hanumān began to observe him as he drew near.
अवेक्षमाणस्तु तदा ददर्श कपिकुञ्जरः। रूपयौवनसम्पन्ना रावणस्य वरस्त्रियः
Then Hanumān, the monkey-chief, saw Rāvaṇa’s splendid women, endowed with beauty and youth.
ताभिः परिवृतो राजा सुरूपाभिर्महायशाः। तन्मृगद्विजसंघुष्टं प्रविष्टः प्रमदावनम्
Surrounded by those beautiful women, the renowned king entered the pleasure-garden, resounding with herds of deer and flocks of birds.
क्षीबो विचित्राभरणः शङ्कुकर्णो महाबलः। तेन विश्रवसः पुत्रः स दृष्टो राक्षसाधिपः
Intoxicated, adorned with varied ornaments, with ears like conch-shells, the mighty son of Viśravas—the lord of the rākṣasas—was seen there.
वृतः परमनारीभिस्ताराभिरिव चन्द्रमाः। तं ददर्श महातेजास्तेजोवन्तं महाकपिः
Encircled by the foremost women, like the moon among stars, the great monkey beheld him, radiant and full of splendor.
रावणोऽयं महाबाहुरिति संचिन्त्य वानरः। सोऽयमेव पुरा शेते पुरमध्ये गृहोत्तमे। अवप्लुतो महातेजा हनूमान् मारुतात्मजः
Thinking, 'This is Rāvaṇa, the mighty-armed,' the monkey realized: 'This is the one who sleeps in the best house at the city’s center.' Then Hanumān, son of the wind, leapt down, full of energy.
स तथाप्युग्रतेजाः स निर्धूतस्तस्य तेजसा। पत्रे गुह्यान्तरे सक्तो मतिमान् संवृतोऽभवत्
Yet, even so, that powerful Hanumān, overwhelmed by Rāvaṇa’s radiance, remained hidden and alert, concealed among the leaves.
स तामसितकेशान्तां सुश्रोणीं संहतस्तनीम्। दिदृक्षुरसितापांगीमुपावर्तत रावणः
Desiring to gaze upon her with dark hair, lovely hips, and closely-set breasts, her eyes black at the corners, Rāvaṇa turned toward her.

Covering her belly with her thighs and her breasts with her arms, the wide-eyed, radiant lady sat weeping.
दशग्रीवस्तु वैदेहीं रक्षितां राक्षसीगणैः। ददर्श दीनां दुःखार्तां नावं सन्नामिवार्णवे
But the ten-headed one saw Vaidehī, guarded by bands of rākṣasīs, wretched and tormented by sorrow, like a sinking ship at sea.
असंवृतायामासीनां धरण्यां संशितव्रताम्। छिन्नां प्रपतितां भूमौ शाखामिव वनस्पतेः
Sitting uncovered on the ground, firm in her vows, she appeared like a broken branch fallen to earth from a tree.
मलमण्डनदिग्धांगीं मण्डनार्हाममण्डनाम्। मृणाली पङ्कदिग्धेव विभाति न विभाति च
Her body smeared with grime instead of ornaments, though worthy of adornment, she shone and did not shine, like a lotus stalk stained with mud.
समीपं राजसिंहस्य रामस्य विदितात्मनः। संकल्पहयसंयुक्तैर्यान्तीमिव मनोरथैः
As if approaching the royal lion Rāma, knower of himself, drawn by the horses of her resolve, journeying by the chariot of her thoughts.
शुष्यन्तीं रुदतीमेकां ध्यानशोकपरायणाम्। दुःखस्यान्तमपश्यन्तीं रामां राममनुव्रताम्
Withering, weeping, alone, absorbed in meditation and sorrow, seeing no end to her suffering, devoted to Rāma and Rāma alone.
चेष्टमानामथाविष्टां पन्नगेन्द्रवधूमिव। धूप्यमानां ग्रहेणेव रोहिणीं धूमकेतुना
Restless, then collapsing, like the wife of the serpent king, or like Rohiṇī oppressed by the comet Dhūmaketu.
वृत्तशीले कुले जातामाचारवति धार्मिके। पुनः संस्कारमापन्नां जातामिव च दुष्कुले
Born in a virtuous family, of upright conduct and righteousness, yet now as if fallen into misfortune, like one born in an ignoble house.
सन्नामिव महाकीर्तिं श्रद्धामिव विमानिताम्। प्रज्ञामिव परिक्षीणामाशां प्रतिहतामिव
Like fame diminished, like faith insulted, like wisdom depleted, like hope struck down.
