काननैः कृत्रिमैश्चापि सर्वतः समलंकृताम्। ये केचित् पादपास्तत्र पुष्पोपगफलोपगाः
It was adorned everywhere with artificial groves, and all the trees there bore flowers and fruits.
सच्छत्राः सवितर्दीकाः सर्वे सौवर्णवेदिकाः। लताप्रतानैर्बहुभिः पर्णैश्च बहुभिर्वृताम्
All had good canopies and platforms, with golden railings, covered by many spreading creepers and abundant leaves.
काञ्चनीं शिंशपामेकां ददर्श स महाकपिः। वृतां हेममयीभिस्तु वेदिकाभिः समन्ततः
The great monkey saw a single golden shimshapa tree, surrounded on all sides by platforms made entirely of gold.
सोऽपश्यद् भूमिभागांश्च नगप्रस्रवणानि च। सुवर्णवृक्षानपरान् ददर्श शिखिसंनिभान्
He saw plots of land and mountain springs, and other golden trees, resembling peacocks in their brilliance.
तेषां द्रुमाणां प्रभया मेरोरिव महाकपिः। अमन्यत तदा वीरः काञ्चनोऽस्मीति सर्वतः
By the radiance of those trees, the mighty hero then thought, 'I myself am golden on every side, like Meru.'
तान् काञ्चनान् वृक्षगणान् मारुतेन प्रकम्पितान्। किङ्किणीशतनिर्घोषान् दृष्ट्वा विस्मयमागमत्
Seeing those golden trees, shaken by the wind, and resounding with the noise of hundreds of small bells, he was filled with wonder.
सुपुष्पिताग्रान् रुचिरांस्तरुणाङ्कुरपल्लवान्। तामारुह्य महावेगः शिंशपां पर्णसंवृताम्
Climbing that beautiful śiṃśapā tree, covered with leaves, whose tips were full of blossoms and fresh shoots, the swift Hanuman ascended.
इतो द्रक्ष्यामि वैदेहीं रामदर्शनलालसाम्। इतश्चेतश्च दुःखार्तां सम्पतन्तीं यदृच्छया
From here, I shall see Vaidehī, longing to see Rāma, suffering in her heart, perhaps wandering here and there by chance.
अशोकवनिका चेयं दृढं रम्या दुरात्मनः। चन्दनैश्चम्पकैश्चापि बकुलैश्च विभूषिता
This is surely the delightful Aśoka grove of that wicked one, adorned with sandalwood, campaka, and bakula trees.
इयं च नलिनी रम्या द्विजसङ्घनिषेविता। इमां सा राजमहिषी नूनमेष्यति जानकी
And here is a lovely lotus pond, frequented by flocks of birds; surely that royal lady, Jānakī, will come to this place.
सा रामा राजमहिषी राघवस्य प्रिया सती। वनसंचारकुशला ध्रुवमेष्यति जानकी
That queen, beloved and faithful to Rāghava, skilled in forest life, Jānakī will certainly come here.
अथवा मृगशावाक्षी वनस्यास्य विचक्षणा। वनमेष्यति साद्येह रामचिन्तासुकर्शिता
Or perhaps, the doe-eyed, wise lady, distressed by thoughts of Rāma, will soon come to this forest.
रामशोकाभिसंतप्ता सा देवी वामलोचना। वनवासरता नित्यमेष्यते वनचारिणी
Tormented by grief for Rāma, that divine lady with lovely eyes, always devoted to forest life, will surely come here.
वनेचराणां सततं नूनं स्पृहयते पुरा। रामस्य दयिता चार्या जनकस्य सुता सती
She must always long for the company of forest dwellers, being the beloved and virtuous daughter of Janaka, dear to Rāma.
संध्याकालमनाः श्यामा ध्रुवमेष्यति जानकी। नदीं चेमां शुभजलां संध्यार्थे वरवर्णिनी
Jānakī, dark-complexioned and intent on evening worship, will surely come to this river with its pure waters at twilight.
तस्याश्चाप्यनुरूपेयमशोकवनिका शुभा। शुभायाः पार्थिवेन्द्रस्य पत्नी रामस्य सम्मता
This beautiful Aśoka grove is indeed fitting for her, the virtuous wife of the lord of men, esteemed by Rāma.
यदि जीवति सा देवी ताराधिपनिभानना। आगमिष्यति सावश्यमिमां शीतजलां नदीम्
If that divine lady, whose face is like the moon, is still alive, she will surely come to this cool-watered river.
एवं तु मत्वा हनुमान् महात्मा प्रतीक्षमाणो मनुजेन्द्रपत्नीम्। अवेक्षमाणश्च ददर्श सर्वं सुपुष्पिते पर्णघने निलीनः
Thinking thus, the great Hanuman waited for the wife of the lord of men, and, observing everything, remained hidden in the dense, blossoming foliage.

He, standing there, searching for Maithilī, and observing the whole area, looked over the entire ground.
संतानकलताभिश्च पादपैरुपशोभिताम्। दिव्यगन्धरसोपेतां सर्वतः समलंकृताम्
Adorned everywhere with trees entwined with creepers, filled with divine fragrance and flavor, it was splendid on all sides.
तां स नन्दनसंकाशां मृगपक्षिभिरावृताम्। हर्म्यप्रासादसम्बाधां कोकिलाकुलनिःस्वनाम्
He saw that place, resembling Nandana, filled with deer and birds, crowded with mansions and palaces, and echoing with the calls of cuckoos.
काञ्चनोत्पलपद्माभिर्वापीभिरुपशोभिताम्। बह्वासनकुथोपेतां बहुभूमिगृहायुताम्
Adorned with pools filled with golden lotuses and lilies, provided with many seats and couches, and furnished with multi-storied houses.
सर्वर्तुकुसुमै रम्यैः फलवद्भिश्च पादपैः। पुष्पितानामशोकानां श्रिया सूर्योदयप्रभाम्
With trees lovely in every season, bearing fruit, and with the splendor of flowering ashoka trees, it shone with the brilliance of sunrise.
प्रदीप्तामिव तत्रस्थो मारुतिः समुदैक्षत। निष्पत्रशाखां विहगैः क्रियमाणामिवासकृत्
There, Hanuman beheld it as if it were ablaze, with branches stripped of leaves, as if the birds were constantly making them bare.
विनिष्पतद्भिः शतशश्चित्रैः पुष्पावतंसकैः। समूलपुष्परचितैरशोकैः शोकनाशनैः
With hundreds of birds darting out, adorned with varied garlands of flowers, and with ashoka trees laden with blossoms that dispel sorrow.
पुष्पभारातिभारैश्च स्पृशद्भिरिव मेदिनीम्। कर्णिकारैः कुसुमितैः किंशुकैश्च सुपुष्पितैः
With the heavy weight of flowers seeming to touch the earth, with karṇikāra and kiṃśuka trees in full bloom.
स देशः प्रभया तेषां प्रदीप्त इव सर्वतः। पुंनागाः सप्तपर्णाश्च चम्पकोद्दालकास्तथा
That region, with the radiance of those trees, appeared as if illuminated on all sides; with puṃnāga, saptaparṇa, campaka, and uddālaka trees as well.
विवृद्धमूला बहवः शोभन्ते स्म सुपुष्पिताः। शातकुम्भनिभाः केचित् केचिदग्निशिखप्रभाः
Many trees with well-grown roots stood splendidly in full bloom; some shone like burnished gold, others with the glow of fire's flame.
नीलाञ्जननिभाः केचित् तत्राशोकाः सहस्रशः। नन्दनं विबुधोद्यानं चित्रं चैत्ररथं यथा
Some ashoka trees there, by the thousands, resembled dark collyrium; like the wondrous Nandana and Caitraratha gardens of the gods.
