The great trees, their leafy tops shaken, their flowers and fruits scattered, looked like defeated courtesans who have cast aside their garments and ornaments.
Shaken by the swift Hanuman, those excellent trees, laden with fruit, quickly shed their flowers, leaves, and fruits.
Deprived of flocks of birds, the trees, with only their branches remaining, all appeared lifeless, shaken violently by the wind.
Like a young woman with disheveled hair, her adornments ruined, her beautiful teeth and lips bitten and scratched by nails and teeth,
So too, battered by Hanuman's tail, hands, and feet, the aśoka grove, with its broken trees, appeared.
With force, the monkey tore apart the garlands of great creepers, just as the wind scatters masses of clouds in the rainy season.
There, the monkey saw delightful jeweled floors, silver floors, and likewise golden floors as he wandered about.
And there were ponds of various shapes, filled with excellent water, adorned here and there with grand stairways made of precious gems.
Their sand was of pearls and coral, their inner floors of crystal, and their banks were beautified by splendid golden trees.
They were adorned with blooming lotuses and blue lilies, graced by chakravaka birds, resounding with the cries of waterfowl, and filled with the calls of swans and cranes.
All around, they were bordered by long rivers lined with trees, their waters like nectar, pure and auspicious.
They were covered with hundreds of creepers, wrapped in clusters of flowers, surrounded by various thickets, and divided by oleander groves.
Then he saw a mountain, vast as a raincloud, with towering peaks, adorned with many-colored summits and encircled on all sides by crags.
It was covered with stone mansions and surrounded by many kinds of trees; the mighty monkey beheld that delightful mountain on earth.
And from that mountain, the monkey saw a river descending, as if a beloved had leapt from her lover's lap and fallen down.
Adorned by trees whose tops had fallen into the water, it seemed like an angry woman being restrained by her dear friends.
And the great monkey saw it once more filled with returning waters, as if a beloved had come back, radiant, to her lover.
Not far from there, Hanuman, the foremost of monkeys and son of the Wind, saw lotus ponds teeming with flocks of various birds.
He also saw an artificial long pool, filled with cool water, with stairways of finest jewels, and shining with pearl sand.
It was remarkable with groups of various animals, a wondrous and decorated forest, and grand palaces constructed by Vishvakarma.
It was adorned everywhere with artificial groves, and all the trees there bore flowers and fruits.
All had good canopies and platforms, with golden railings, covered by many spreading creepers and abundant leaves.
The great monkey saw a single golden shimshapa tree, surrounded on all sides by platforms made entirely of gold.
He saw plots of land and mountain springs, and other golden trees, resembling peacocks in their brilliance.
By the radiance of those trees, the mighty hero then thought, 'I myself am golden on every side, like Meru.'
Seeing those golden trees, shaken by the wind, and resounding with the noise of hundreds of small bells, he was filled with wonder.
Climbing that beautiful śiṃśapā tree, covered with leaves, whose tips were full of blossoms and fresh shoots, the swift Hanuman ascended.
From here, I shall see Vaidehī, longing to see Rāma, suffering in her heart, perhaps wandering here and there by chance.
This is surely the delightful Aśoka grove of that wicked one, adorned with sandalwood, campaka, and bakula trees.
And here is a lovely lotus pond, frequented by flocks of birds; surely that royal lady, Jānakī, will come to this place.
