Here itself, with controlled food and senses, I will remain; let not all those men and vanaras perish because of me.
And this great Ashoka grove, with its mighty trees, I must reach, for I have not yet searched it.
Having bowed to the Vasus, Rudras, Adityas, Ashvins, and also the Maruts, I will go forth—he who increases the grief of the demons.
Having conquered the demons, I will restore the noble lady, delight of the Ikshvaku line, to Rama, as one grants success to an ascetic.
Then, after reflecting for a moment, with his senses freed from anxiety, the mighty-armed Hanuman, son of the Wind, arose.
Salutations to Rama with Lakshmana, and to the goddess, daughter of Janaka; salutations to Rudra, Indra, Yama, and Vayu; salutations to the hosts of the Moon, Fire, and Maruts.
Having thus offered his salutations to them and to Sugriva, Hanuman, son of the Wind, gazed in all directions toward the Ashoka grove.
Having first gone in mind to the auspicious Ashoka grove, the monkey, son of the Wind, began to consider his next step.
Surely, this blessed Ashoka grove, sanctified in every way, will be crowded with many demons and filled with trees.
Certainly, guards have been stationed here to protect the trees; even the great Lord, soul of the universe, does not stir the wind too much.
I have restrained myself for the sake of Rama and because of Ravana; may all the gods and hosts of seers grant me success here.
May Brahma, the self-born Lord, the gods, ascetics, Agni, Vayu, Puruhuta, and the wielder of the thunderbolt grant me success.
May Varuna, the noose-holder, Soma and the Adityas, the great Ashvins, and all the Maruts likewise grant success.
May all beings, and the Lord of beings, and those others unseen who move along the path, grant me success.
When shall I see that noble face, with its raised, white teeth, unblemished, pure smile, and eyes like lotus petals, radiant as the clear moon?
How today will that gentle, ascetic lady, overpowered by force, appear before my eyes—she who has been seized by a base, cruel, merciless one, terrible in his adorned form?
Listen to the fourteenth chapter. Thus ends the fourteenth sarga in the Sundara Kanda of the glorious Ramayana of Valmiki.
Having reflected for a moment and fixed his mind on her, the mighty and radiant one leapt over the wall of that mansion.
Standing on the wall, the great monkey, his whole body thrilled with joy, saw various trees with blossoming tops at the beginning of spring.
He saw splendid aśoka trees, blooming campaka trees, uddālaka trees, nāga trees, mango trees, and even trees resembling monkey faces.
Thus, passing through mango groves adorned with hundreds of creepers, he leapt into the garden of trees like an arrow released from a bowstring.
Entering that wondrous grove, resounding with birds, and surrounded on all sides by silver and golden trees,
Hanuman, the mighty one, beheld that marvelous, variegated forest, filled with flocks of birds and herds of deer, shining like the risen sun.
It was filled with diverse trees bearing flowers and fruits, constantly frequented by cuckoos and intoxicated black bees.
At the proper time, the garden was vibrant with joyful people, teeming with excited birds and animals, resounding with the cries of intoxicated peacocks and throngs of various birds.
As he searched for the blameless princess of noble form, the monkey awakened the birds, who were sleeping peacefully.
As flocks of birds took flight, their wings stirred the air, and many-hued, various showers of flowers fell down.
Covered with flowers, Hanuman, the son of the wind, shone in the midst of the aśoka grove like a mountain made of blossoms.
Seeing the monkey moving swiftly in the clusters of trees in every direction, all the creatures thought that spring itself had arrived.
There, the earth, strewn with various kinds of fallen flowers from the trees, shone like a woman adorned for a festival.
