The great monkey saw those various vessels, some full, some half-remaining, and some completely emptied of their contents.
He saw some drinks not yet tasted, various foods in some places, and in others, drinks partially consumed.
Observing some beds with only half their covers left, he wandered; elsewhere, the beds of women were empty in many ways, while some beautiful women slept embracing each other.
One, having taken another's garment and embracing her, had fallen asleep, overcome by the power of sleep.
By the breath of their gentle exhalations, their garments and garlands upon their bodies scarcely moved, as if stirred by a soft breeze.
Of cool sandalwood, sweet liquor, various garlands, and many kinds of flowers—
The wind carried many fragrances there, mingled from baths, sandalwood, and incense.
A fragrant scent wafted through the Pushpaka palace; there were some women dark, some fair, and some beautiful ones with black complexions.
Some women had golden-hued limbs, in that abode of the rakshasas; and, overcome by sleep, they were stupefied by passion.
Just as with sleeping lotuses, so was their appearance; thus, the monkey of great splendor saw all of Ravana's inner chambers completely, but did not see Janaki.
Then, as he observed those women, the great monkey was seized by great anxiety, troubled by fear of wrongdoing.
To gaze upon the sleeping women of another's harem—this, indeed, will cause me a grave breach of righteousness.
For my sight has never dwelt on the wives of others with desire; yet here, I have witnessed the possession of another's wives.
Then another thought arose in the mind of that resolute one, whose heart was firmly set and who discerned the right course of action.
Indeed, I have seen all of Ravana's women, who are unguarded, but not even in my mind does any distortion arise.
For the mind is the cause of all the senses' activity, in both auspicious and inauspicious states—and mine is well-disciplined.
Nowhere else can I search for Vaidehi; for when seeking, women are always seen among women.
One searches for a being in the womb from which it arises; it is not possible to search for a lost woman among deer.
Thus, with a pure mind, I have searched this entire inner palace of Ravana, but Janaki is nowhere to be seen.
Hanuman, the mighty one, looked upon the daughters of gods, Gandharvas, and Nagas, but did not see Janaki.
There, the monkey did not see her, though he saw other noble women; then, withdrawing, the hero prepared to depart.
Then, the illustrious son of the wind, striving in every way, left the drinking hall and began to search elsewhere.

Listen now to the twelfth canto.
Standing in the midst of that palace, he went through the vine-houses, painted chambers, and night-halls, eager to see Sita, but could not find her of lovely appearance.
Then the great monkey, not seeing the beloved of the descendant of Raghu, thought: Surely Sita is not here, for though I search everywhere, Maithili does not appear before me.
Janaki, devoted to preserving her own virtue, must have been slain by this wicked one, the foremost among the Rakshasas, for she stood firm on the noble path.
Seeing those wives of the king of the Rakshasas—hideous, deformed, monstrous in appearance, with great faces and dreadful forms—the daughter of Janaka must have perished out of fear.
Not having found Sita, nor accomplished my task, and having spent much time with the monkeys in vain, I have no way to return to Sugriva; the monkey king is strict and powerful.
I have seen the entire inner palace and the wives of Ravana, but the virtuous Sita is not seen; my effort has been in vain.
What will all the gathered monkeys say about me when I return, O hero? Go there and tell us what you have done.
