निहन्तॄन् परसैन्यानां गृहे तस्मिन् ददर्श सः। क्षरतश्च यथा मेघान् स्रवतश्च यथा गिरीन्
In that house, he saw destroyers of enemy armies, pouring forth like clouds and flowing like mountains.
मेघस्तनितनिर्घोषान् दुर्धर्षान् समरे परैः। सहस्रं वाहिनीस्तत्र जाम्बूनदपरिष्कृताः
He saw armies there, a thousand strong, with the roar of thunderclouds, invincible in battle by enemies, adorned with gold.
हेमजालैरविच्छिन्नास्तरुणादित्यसंनिभाः। ददर्श राक्षसेन्द्रस्य रावणस्य निवेशने
He saw, in the residence of Rāvaṇa, the king of the rākṣasas, those who shone like the rising sun, uninterrupted by nets of gold.
शिबिका विविधाकाराः स कपिर्मारुतात्मजः। लतागृहाणि चित्राणि चित्रशालागृहाणि च
That son of the wind-god, the monkey, saw palanquins of various shapes, splendid vine-houses, and halls adorned with paintings.
क्रीडागृहाणि चान्यानि दारुपर्वतकानि च। कामस्य गृहकं रम्यं दिवागृहकमेव च
He saw also other playhouses, wooden mountain models, the delightful house of love, and the day-hall.
ददर्श राक्षसेन्द्रस्य रावणस्य निवेशने। स मन्दरसमप्रख्यं मयूरस्थानसंकुलम्
In the palace of the king of the rākṣasas, Rāvaṇa, he saw a mansion as lofty as Mount Mandara, crowded with peacock thrones.
ध्वजयष्टिभिराकीर्णं ददर्श भवनोत्तमम्। अनन्तरत्ननिचयं निधिजालं समन्ततः। धीरनिष्ठितकर्माङ्गं गृहं भूतपतेरिव
He saw the excellent mansion, filled with flagstaffs, surrounded on all sides by heaps of countless jewels, its structure firm and resolute in its purpose, like the house of the lord of beings.
अर्चिर्भिश्चापि रत्नानां तेजसा रावणस्य च। विरराज च तद् वेश्म रश्मिवानिव रश्मिभिः
And with the brilliance of its gems and the radiance of Rāvaṇa himself, that palace shone like the sun with its rays.
जाम्बूनदमयान्येव शयनान्यासनानि च। भाजनानि च शुभ्राणि ददर्श हरियूथपः
The chief of the monkeys saw beds, seats, and shining vessels made entirely of gold.
मध्वासवकृतक्लेदं मणिभाजनसंकुलम्। मनोरममसम्बाधं कुबेरभवनं यथा
He saw vessels of jewels, soaked with honey and wine, charming and spacious, like the mansion of Kubera.
नूपुराणां च घोषेण काञ्चीनां निःस्वनेन च। मृदङ्गतलनिर्घोषैर्घोषवद्भिर्विनादितम्
Resounding with the jingling of anklets, the ringing of girdles, and the deep beats of drums, the place was filled with harmonious sounds.

Hanumān entered the great mansion, surrounded by clusters of palaces and hundreds of beautiful women, its courtyards well arranged.

स वेश्मजालं बलवान् ददर्श व्यासक्तवैदूर्यसुवर्णजालम्। यथा महत्प्रावृषि मेघजालं विद्युत्पिनद्धं सविहङ्गजालम्
That mighty one saw a network of mansions, adorned with lattices of beryl and gold, like a great mass of clouds in the rainy season, streaked with lightning and filled with birds.
निवेशनानां विविधाश्च शालाः प्रधानशङ्खायुधचापशालाः। मनोहराश्चापि पुनर्विशाला ददर्श वेश्माद्रिषु चन्द्रशालाः
He saw various halls of the residences—halls for main conches, weapons, and bows; and again, enchanting and spacious moon-halls on the mansion-mountains.
गृहाणि नानावसुराजितानि देवासुरैश्चापि सुपूजितानि। सर्वैश्च दोषैः परिवर्जितानि कपिर्ददर्श स्वबलार्जितानि
He saw houses acquired by the strength of their owners, ruled by various spirits, honored by gods and demons, free from all faults.
तानि प्रयत्नाभिसमाहितानि मयेन साक्षादिव निर्मितानि। महीतले सर्वगुणोत्तराणि ददर्श लंकाधिपतेर्गृहाणि
He saw those houses, carefully constructed as if by Maya himself, surpassing all others in qualities on earth, belonging to the lord of Laṅkā.
ततो ददर्शोच्छ्रितमेघरूपं मनोहरं काञ्चनचारुरूपम्। रक्षोऽधिपस्यात्मबलानुरूपं गृहोत्तमं ह्यप्रतिरूपरूपम्
Then he saw a lofty mansion, shaped like a mass of clouds, enchanting and beautiful with gold, fitting the power of the lord of the rākṣasas, a peerless house with no equal.
महीतले स्वर्गमिव प्रकीर्णं श्रिया ज्वलन्तं बहुरत्नकीर्णम्। नानातरूणां कुसुमावकीर्णं गिरेरिवाग्रं रजसावकीर्णम्
Spread on the earth like heaven, blazing with splendor, studded with many gems, covered with flowers of various trees, like the summit of a mountain covered with dust.
यथा नगाग्रं बहुधातुचित्रं यथा नभश्च ग्रहचन्द्रचित्रम्। ददर्श युक्तीकृतचारुमेघ- चित्रं विमानं बहुरत्नचित्रम्
He saw a palace adorned with many gems, as variegated as a mountain peak rich in minerals, as the sky is with planets and the moon, and beautifully decorated with artfully arranged clouds.
मही कृता पर्वतराजिपूर्णा शैलाः कृता वृक्षवितानपूर्णाः। वृक्षाः कृताः पुष्पवितानपूर्णाः पुष्पं कृतं केसरपत्रपूर्णम्
The earth was made full of rows of mountains, the mountains were made full of canopies of trees, the trees were made full of canopies of flowers, and the flowers were made full of filaments and petals.
कृतानि वेश्मानि च पाण्डुराणि तथा सुपुष्पाण्यपि पुष्कराणि। पुनश्च पद्मानि सकेसराणि वनानि चित्राणि सरोवराणि
White palaces have been built, and likewise lotus ponds full of blossoms; again, there are lotuses with stamens, wondrous forests, and lakes.
पुष्पाह्वयं नाम विराजमानं रत्नप्रभाभिश्च विघूर्णमानम्। वेश्मोत्तमानामपि चोच्चमानं महाकपिस्तत्र महाविमानम्
There stands the splendid mansion called Puṣpāhvaya, shining and swirling with the brilliance of jewels, towering among the finest palaces, a grand palace of the mighty monkey.
कृताश्च वैदूर्यमया विहङ्गा रूप्यप्रवालैश्च तथा विहङ्गाः। चित्राश्च नानावसुभिर्भुजङ्गा जात्यानुरूपास्तुरगाः शुभाङ्गाः
Birds fashioned from beryl have been made, and likewise birds of silver and coral; there are also wondrous serpents adorned with various gems, and horses of noble breed with beautiful limbs.
प्रवालजाम्बूनदपुष्पपक्षाः सलीलमावर्जितजिह्मपक्षाः। कामस्य साक्षादिव भान्ति पक्षाः कृता विहङ्गाः सुमुखाः सुपक्षाः
Birds with wings of coral and gold, wings bent and gathered as if wet, their wings seem to shine as if they were the very embodiment of desire; beautiful birds have been made, with lovely faces and splendid wings.
नियुज्यमानाश्च गजाः सुहस्ताः सकेसराश्चोत्पलपत्रहस्ताः। बभूव देवी च कृतासुहस्ता लक्ष्मीस्तथा पद्मिनि पद्महस्ता
Elephants with fine trunks are harnessed, some with lotus-petal trunks and manes; the goddess has been fashioned with auspicious hands, and Lakṣmī likewise, holding lotuses in her hands.
इतीव तद्गृहमभिगम्य शोभनं सविस्मयो नगमिव चारुकन्दरम्। पुनश्च तत्परमसुगन्धि सुन्दरं हिमात्यये नगमिव चारुकन्दरम्
Thus, approaching that splendid house, amazed, as if it were a mountain with a beautiful cave; again, that place, fragrant and lovely, was like a mountain with a charming cave after the snow has melted.
ततः स तां कपिरभिपत्य पूजितां चरन् पुरीं दशमुखबाहुपालिताम्। अदृश्य तां जनकसुतां सुपूजितां सुदुःखितां पतिगुणवेगनिर्जिताम्
Then the monkey, honored, entered that city ruled by the ten-headed one, searching for Janaka's daughter, who was revered, deeply sorrowful, and overcome by the force of her husband's virtues.
ततस्तदा बहुविधभावितात्मनः कृतात्मनो जनकसुतां सुवर्त्मनः। अपश्यतोऽभवदतिदुःखितं मनः सचक्षुषः प्रविचरतो महात्मनः
Then, as he searched for Janaka's daughter, whose mind was noble and whose conduct was virtuous, his mind became exceedingly distressed as he looked everywhere with his eyes, the great-souled one.
