स्त्री चेति मन्यमानेन नातिक्रोधः स्वयं कृतः। सा तु तेन प्रहारेण विह्वलाङ्गी निशाचरी। पपात सहसा भूमौ विकृताननदर्शना
Thinking, 'She is a woman,' he did not become excessively angry; but struck by him, that night-wanderer, her limbs reeling, fell suddenly to the ground, her face distorted.
ततस्तु हनुमान् वीरस्तां दृष्ट्वा विनिपातिताम्। कृपां चकार तेजस्वी मन्यमानः स्त्रियं च ताम्
Then the heroic Hanumān, seeing her fallen, felt compassion, considering her to be a woman.
ततो वै भृशमुद्विग्ना लंका सा गद्गदाक्षरम्। उवाचागर्वितं वाक्यं हनुमन्तं प्लवङ्गमम्
Then Laṅkā, greatly agitated, spoke with faltering words, uttering proud speech to Hanumān, the monkey-leaper.
प्रसीद सुमहाबाहो त्रायस्व हरिसत्तम। समये सौम्य तिष्ठन्ति सत्त्ववन्तो महाबलाः
'Be gracious, O mighty-armed one, protect me, best of monkeys. The strong and virtuous always keep to their bounds, gentle one.'
अहं तु नगरी लंका स्वयमेव प्लवङ्गम। निर्जिताहं त्वया वीर विक्रमेण महाबल
'I am the city of Laṅkā herself, O monkey. I have been conquered by you, O hero, by your great valor and might.'
इदं च तथ्यं शृणु मे ब्रुवन्त्या वै हरीश्वर। स्वयं स्वयम्भुवा दत्तं वरदानं यथा मम
'And now, O lord of monkeys, hear this truth as I speak: a boon was granted to me by the Self-born himself.'
यदा त्वां वानरः कश्चिद् विक्रमाद् वशमानयेत्। तदा त्वया हि विज्ञेयं रक्षसां भयमागतम्
'Whenever any monkey, by his prowess, brings you under his control, then you should know that danger has come for the Rākṣasas.'
स हि मे समयः सौम्य प्राप्तोऽद्य तव दर्शनात्। स्वयम्भूविहितः सत्यो न तस्यास्ति व्यतिक्रमः
'That very condition, gentle one, has now been fulfilled by your coming. Established by the Self-born, it is true and cannot be violated.'
सीतानिमित्तं राज्ञस्तु रावणस्य दुरात्मनः। रक्षसां चैव सर्वेषां विनाशः समुपागतः
'Because of Sītā, and because of the evil-minded king Rāvaṇa, the destruction of all the Rākṣasas has now arrived.'
तत् प्रविश्य हरिश्रेष्ठ पुरीं रावणपालिताम्। विधत्स्व सर्वकार्याणि यानि यानीह वाञ्छसि
Therefore, O best of monkeys, enter the city guarded by Rāvaṇa and accomplish all the tasks you desire here.
प्रविश्य शापोपहतां हरीश्वर पुरीं शुभां राक्षसमुख्यपालिताम्। यदृच्छया त्वं जनकात्मजां सतीं विमार्ग सर्वत्र गतो यथासुखम्
Enter the blessed city, lord of monkeys, protected by the foremost Rākṣasas, though struck by a curse; and search everywhere for Sītā, daughter of Janaka, as you wish.

स निर्जित्य पुरीं लंकां श्रेष्ठां तां कामरूपिणीम्। विक्रमेण महातेजा हनूमान् कपिसत्तमः
Having conquered the excellent city of Laṅkā and that shape-shifting guardian by his valor, the illustrious Hanumān, best among monkeys—
अद्वारेण महावीर्यः प्राकारमवपुप्लुवे। निशि लंकां महासत्त्वो विवेश कपिकुञ्जरः
With extraordinary valor, the great-souled monkey-elephant entered Lanka at night by leaping over the wall without using the gate.
प्रविश्य नगरीं लंकां कपिराजहितंकरः। चक्रेऽथ पादं सव्यं च शत्रूणां स तु मूर्धनि
Having entered the city of Lanka for the good of the monkey-king, he then placed his left foot upon the heads of the enemies.
ततस्तु तां पुरीं लंकां रम्यामभिययौ कपिः। हसितोत्कृष्टनिनदैस्तूर्यघोषपुरस्कृतैः
Then the monkey approached that beautiful city of Lanka, accompanied by the resounding blare of laughter and loud musical instruments.
वज्राङ्कुशनिकाशैश्च वज्रजालविभूषितैः। गृहमेघैः पुरी रम्या बभासे द्यौरिवाम्बुदैः
The splendid city shone with mansions adorned with lattices like thunderbolts and decorated with diamond networks, resembling clouds in the sky.
प्रजज्वाल तदा लंका रक्षोगणगृहैः शुभैः। सिताभ्रसदृशैश्चित्रैः पद्मस्वस्तिकसंस्थितैः
At that time, Lanka blazed with the splendid houses of the hosts of demons, white as clouds, adorned with lotus and svastika designs.
वर्धमानगृहैश्चापि सर्वतः सुविभूषितैः। तां चित्रमाल्याभरणां कपिराजहितंकरः
And with ever-increasing houses, beautifully decorated on all sides, that city, adorned with varied garlands and ornaments, was seen by him who acts for the monkey-king's good.
राघवार्थे चरन् श्रीमान् ददर्श च ननन्द च। भवनाद् भवनं गच्छन् ददर्श कपिकुञ्जरः
Moving about for the sake of Rāghava, the illustrious one saw and rejoiced as he went from mansion to mansion, the monkey-elephant beheld them.
विविधाकृतिरूपाणि भवनानि ततस्ततः। शुश्राव रुचिरं गीतं त्रिस्थानस्वरभूषितम्
He saw mansions of various forms and shapes here and there, and heard charming songs embellished with the threefold notes.
स्त्रीणां मदनविद्धानां दिवि चाप्सरसामिव। शुश्राव काञ्चीनिनदं नूपुराणां च निःस्वनम्
He heard the jingling of girdles and the sound of anklets of women struck by love, like the celestial nymphs in heaven.
सोपाननिनदांश्चापि भवनेषु महात्मनाम्। आस्फोटितनिनादांश्च क्ष्वेडितांश्च ततस्ततः
He also heard the sounds of footsteps in the mansions of the great-souled, as well as the clapping of hands and whistling here and there.
शुश्राव जपतां तत्र मन्त्रान् रक्षोगृहेषु वै। स्वाध्यायनिरतांश्चैव यातुधानान् ददर्श सः
There, in the houses of the demons, he heard the chanting of mantras by those reciting, and he saw those night-wanderers devoted to their own study.
रावणस्तवसंयुक्तान् गर्जतो राक्षसानपि। राजमार्गं समावृत्य स्थितं रक्षोगणं महत्
He also saw the great host of demons, roaring and praising Rāvaṇa, standing and filling the royal road.
ददर्श मध्यमे गुल्मे राक्षसस्य चरान् बहून्। दीक्षिताञ्जटिलान् मुण्डान् गोजिनाम्बरवाससः
He saw, in the central division, many spies of the demon, consecrated, matted-haired, shaven-headed, clothed in cowhide garments.
दर्भमुष्टिप्रहरणानग्निकुण्डायुधांस्तथा। कूटमुद्गरपाणींश्च दण्डायुधधरानपि
He saw those armed with darbha grass in their fists, those with fire-pits as weapons, those holding clubs and maces, and those bearing staffs as weapons.
एकाक्षानेकवर्णांश्च लंबोदरपयोधरान्। करालान् भुग्नवक्त्रांश्च विकटान् वामनांस्तथा
He saw one-eyed, many-colored, pot-bellied, large-breasted, fierce, crooked-mouthed, monstrous, and also dwarfish ones.
धन्विनः खड्गिनश्चैव शतघ्नीमुसलायुधान्। परिघोत्तमहस्तांश्च विचित्रकवचोज्ज्वलान्
He saw archers, sword-bearers, those armed with pestles and iron clubs, those with great iron bars in their hands, shining in varied armor.
नातिस्थूलान् नातिकृशान् नातिदीर्घातिह्रस्वकान्। नातिगौरान् नातिकृष्णान्नातिकुब्जान्न वामनान्
He saw those who were neither too stout nor too thin, neither too tall nor too short, neither too fair nor too dark, neither too hunchbacked nor too dwarfish.
