हनूमांस्तु ततः क्रुद्धस्त्रिंशद् योजनमायतः। चकार सुरसा वक्त्रं चत्वारिंशत् तथोच्छ्रितम्
Then Hanuman, enraged, became thirty yojanas long; Surasā made her mouth forty yojanas wide in response.
बभूव हनुमान् वीरः पञ्चाशद् योजनोच्छ्रितः। चकार सुरसा वक्त्रं षष्टिं योजनमुच्छ्रितम्
The heroic Hanuman became fifty yojanas tall, and Surasa made her mouth sixty yojanas wide.
तदैव हनुमान् वीरः सप्ततिं योजनोच्छ्रितः। चकार सुरसा वक्त्रमशीतिं योजनोच्छ्रितम्
Then at once, the valiant Hanuman grew to seventy yojanas in height, and Surasa widened her mouth to eighty yojanas.
हनूमाननलप्रख्यो नवतिं योजनोच्छ्रितः। चकार सुरसा वक्त्रं शतयोजनमायतम्
Hanuman, blazing like fire, became ninety yojanas tall, and Surasa stretched her mouth to a length of one hundred yojanas.
तद् दृष्ट्वा व्यादितं त्वास्यं वायुपुत्रः स बुद्धिमान्। दीर्घजिह्वं सुरसया सुभीमं नरकोपमम्
Seeing that gaping mouth, long-tongued, terrifying as hell, and dreadful as opened by Surasa, the wise son of the wind reflected.
स संक्षिप्यात्मनः कायं जीमूत इव मारुतिः। तस्मिन् मुहूर्ते हनुमान् बभूवाङ्गुष्ठमात्रकः
Then Hanuman, the son of the wind, contracted his body like a rain cloud, and in that instant became the size of a thumb.
सोऽभिपद्याथ तद्वक्त्रं निष्पत्य च महाबलः। अन्तरिक्षे स्थितः श्रीमानिदं वचनमब्रवीत्
Approaching and entering that mouth, the mighty and illustrious Hanuman emerged and, standing in the sky, spoke these words:
प्रविष्टोऽस्मि हि ते वक्त्रं दाक्षायणि नमोऽस्तुते। गमिष्ये यत्र वैदेही सत्यश्चासीद् वरस्तव
"I have entered your mouth, O daughter of Daksha; my salutations to you! Now I will go where Vaidehī is, for your boon remains true."
तं दृष्ट्वा वदनान्मुक्तं चन्द्रं राहुमुखादिव। अब्रवीत् सुरसा देवी स्वेन रूपेण वानरम्
Seeing him released from her mouth like the moon from Rahu's jaws, the goddess Surasa addressed the monkey in her own form:
अर्थसिद्ध्यै हरिश्रेष्ठ गच्छ सौम्य यथासुखम्। समानय च वैदेहीं राघवेण महात्मना
"Go, O best of monkeys, gentle one, and accomplish your purpose as you wish. Bring Vaidehī to the great-souled Rāghava."
तत् तृतीयं हनुमतो दृष्ट्वा कर्म सुदुष्करम्। साधुसाध्विति भूतानि प्रशशंसुस्तदा हरिम्
Witnessing Hanuman's third and most difficult feat, all beings then praised the monkey, exclaiming, 'Well done! Well done!'
स सागरमनाधृष्यमभ्येत्य वरुणालयम्। जगामाकाशमाविश्य वेगेन गरुडोपमः
Reaching the unfathomable ocean, the abode of Varuna, Hanuman entered the sky with the speed of Garuda.
सेविते वारिधाराभिः पतगैश्च निषेविते। चरिते कैशिकाचार्यैरैरावतनिषेविते
It was frequented by clouds bearing water, by birds, by the teachers of the Kaiśika dance, and by Airavata.
सिंहकुञ्जरशार्दूलपतगोरगवाहनैः। विमानैः सम्पतद्भिश्च विमलैः समलंकृते
It was adorned with lions, elephants, tigers, birds, serpents as mounts, and with pure, decorated flying vehicles moving about.
वज्राशनिसमस्पर्शैः पावकैरिव शोभिते। कृतपुण्यैर्महाभागैः स्वर्गजिद्भिरधिष्ठिते
It shone like fire, touched by thunderbolts, inhabited by the greatly fortunate who had gained heaven through merit.
वहता हव्यमत्यन्तं सेविते चित्रभानुना। ग्रहनक्षत्रचन्द्रार्कतारागणविभूषिते
It was traversed by the sun, worshipped by Chitrabhanu, and adorned with planets, stars, the moon, and the sun.
महर्षिगणगन्धर्वनागयक्षसमाकुले। विविक्ते विमले विश्वे विश्वावसुनिषेविते
It was crowded with great sages, Gandharvas, Nāgas, and Yakṣas, yet clear and pure, attended by all the Viśvavasus.
देवराजगजाक्रान्ते चन्द्रसूर्यपथे शिवे। विताने जीवलोकस्य वितते ब्रह्मनिर्मिते
It was trodden by the king of the gods' elephant, on the auspicious path of the moon and sun, the canopy of living beings, spread out and created by Brahma.
बहुशः सेविते वीरैर्विद्याधरगणैर्वृते। जगाम वायुमार्गे च गरुत्मानिव मारुतिः
Often frequented by heroic Vidyādharas, Hanuman, son of the wind, traveled along the path of the wind like Garuda.
हनुमान् मेघजालानि प्राकर्षन् मारुतो यथा। कालागुरुसवर्णानि रक्तपीतसितानि च
Hanuman drew along masses of clouds, as the wind does, clouds colored like black aloe wood, and red, yellow, and white.
कपिना कृष्यमाणानि महाभ्राणि चकाशिरे। प्रविशन्नभ्रजालानि निष्पतंश्च पुनः पुनः
The great clouds, pulled by the monkey, shone as he entered and exited the cloud masses again and again.
प्रावृषीन्दुरिवाभाति निष्पतन् प्रविशंस्तदा। प्रदृश्यमानः सर्वत्र हनूमान् मारुतात्मजः
At that time, Hanuman, son of the wind, was visible everywhere, appearing like the autumn moon as he entered and exited.
भेजेऽम्बरं निरालम्बं पक्षयुक्त इवाद्रिराट्। प्लवमानं तु तं दृष्ट्वा सिंहिका नाम राक्षसी
He reached the unsupported sky, like a mountain with wings; seeing him floating, a rakshasi named Simhika
मनसा चिन्तयामास प्रवृद्धा कामरूपिणी। अद्य दीर्घस्य कालस्य भविष्याम्यहमाशिता
The powerful, shape-shifting Simhika thought to herself, 'Today, after a long time, I will have a meal.'
इदं मम महासत्त्वं चिरस्य वशमागतम्। इति संचिन्त्य मनसा च्छायामस्य समाक्षिपत्
'This great being has finally come under my control,' she thought, and seized his shadow.
छायायां गृह्यमाणायां चिन्तयामास वानरः। समाक्षिप्तोऽस्मि सहसा पङ्गूकृतपराक्रमः
As his shadow was being caught, the monkey thought, 'I have suddenly been seized, my strength rendered useless.'
प्रतिलोमेन वातेन महानौरिव सागरे। तिर्यगूर्ध्वमधश्चैव वीक्षमाणस्तदा कपिः
Like a great ship in the sea driven against the current by the wind, the monkey looked around sideways, upwards, and downwards.
ददर्श स महासत्त्वमुत्थितं लवणाम्भसि। तद् दृष्ट्वा चिन्तयामास मारुतिर्विकृताननाम्
He saw the great being rising in the salty water; seeing her, the wind-born Hanuman pondered.
कपिराज्ञा यथाख्यातं सत्त्वमद्भुतदर्शनम्। छायाग्राहि महावीर्यं तदिदं नात्र संशयः
As the monkey king had described, this is the wondrous being, the mighty shadow-catcher; there is no doubt.
स तां बुद्ध्वार्थतत्त्वेन सिंहिकां मतिमान् कपिः। व्यवर्धत महाकायः प्रावृषीव बलाहकः
Understanding her true nature, the wise monkey Hanuman expanded his body, like a rain cloud in autumn.
