स तत् प्रहर्षमलभद् विपुलं पर्वतोत्तमः। देवतानां पतिं दृष्ट्वा परितुष्टं शतक्रतुम्
The excellent mountain attained great joy, seeing Indra, lord of the gods, fully satisfied.
स वै दत्तवरः शैलो बभूवावस्थितस्तदा। हनूमांश्च मुहूर्तेन व्यतिचक्राम सागरम्
That mountain, having received the boon, remained there; and Hanuman, within a moment, crossed over the ocean.
ततो देवाः सगन्धर्वाः सिद्धाश्च परमर्षयः। अब्रुवन् सूर्यसंकाशां सुरसां नागमातरम्
Then the gods, along with the Gandharvas, the Siddhas, and the supreme sages, spoke to Surasa, the serpent-mother, radiant as the sun.
अयं वातात्मजः श्रीमान् प्लवते सागरोपरि। हनूमान् नाम तस्य त्वं मुहूर्तं विघ्नमाचर
This illustrious son of the wind, Hanuman by name, is crossing over the ocean; for a moment, you must create an obstacle for him.
राक्षसं रूपमास्थाय सुघोरं पर्वतोपमम्। दंष्ट्राकरालं पिङ्गाक्षं वक्त्रं कृत्वा नभःस्पृशम्
Assume a terrifying and monstrous form, like a great mountain, with dreadful fangs and tawny eyes, and a mouth reaching the sky.
बलमिच्छामहे ज्ञातुं भूयश्चास्य पराक्रमम्। त्वां विजेष्यत्युपायेन विषादं वा गमिष्यति
We wish to know his strength and further his prowess; either he will overcome you by some means, or he will fall into despair.
एवमुक्ता तु सा देवी दैवतैरभिसत्कृता। समुद्रमध्ये सुरसा बिभ्रती राक्षसं वपुः
Thus addressed, that goddess, honored by the gods, Surasā, took on a demonic form in the midst of the ocean.
विकृतं च विरूपं च सर्वस्य च भयावहम्। प्लवमानं हनूमन्तमावृत्येदमुवाच ह
Grotesque and misshapen, inspiring fear in all, she blocked Hanuman as he was flying and spoke these words.
मम भक्ष्यः प्रदिष्टस्त्वमीश्वरैर्वानरर्षभ। अहं त्वां भक्षयिष्यामि प्रविशेदं ममाननम्
You have been appointed as my food by the gods, O foremost of monkeys; I will devour you—enter my mouth.
वर एष पुरा दत्तो मम धात्रेति सत्वरा। व्यादाय वक्त्रं विपुलं स्थिता सा मारुतेः पुरः
This boon was once given to me by the Creator: 'Be swift!' With her vast mouth opened wide, she stood before the son of the wind.
एवमुक्तः सुरसया प्रहृष्टवदनोऽब्रवीत्। रामो दाशरथिर्नाम प्रविष्टो दण्डकावनम्। लक्ष्मणेन सह भ्रात्रा वैदेह्या चापि भार्यया
Thus addressed by Surasā, Hanuman, his face beaming, replied: 'Rama, son of Dasaratha, has entered the Dandaka forest with his brother Lakshmana and his wife Sita.'
अन्यकार्यविषक्तस्य बद्धवैरस्य राक्षसैः। तस्य सीता हृता भार्या रावणेन यशस्विनी
Absorbed in other duties and bound by enmity with the demons, his illustrious wife Sita was carried off by Ravana.
तस्याः सकाशं दूतोऽहं गमिष्ये रामशासनात्। कर्तुमर्हसि रामस्य साह्यं विषयवासिनि
By Rama's command, I am going as a messenger to her; you, dwelling in these waters, ought to assist Rama.
अथवा मैथिलीं दृष्ट्वा रामं चाक्लिष्टकारिणम्। आगमिष्यामि ते वक्त्रं सत्यं प्रतिशृणोमि ते
Otherwise, having seen Maithili and Rama, the doer of righteous deeds, I will return to your mouth; I pledge you this truthfully.
एवमुक्ता हनुमता सुरसा कामरूपिणी। अब्रवीन्नातिवर्तेन्मां कश्चिदेष वरो मम
Thus addressed by Hanuman, Surasā, who could assume any form at will, replied: 'No one may bypass me; this is my boon.'
तं प्रयान्तं समुद्वीक्ष्य सुरसा वाक्यमब्रवीत्। बलं जिज्ञासमाना सा नागमाता हनूमतः
Seeing him proceeding, Surasā, the mother of serpents, wishing to test Hanuman's strength, spoke these words.
निविश्य वदनं मेऽद्य गन्तव्यं वानरोत्तम। वर एष पुरा दत्तो मम धात्रेति सत्वरा
Enter my mouth today, O best of monkeys, or you cannot go further; this boon was once given to me by the Creator—be swift!
व्यादाय विपुलं वक्त्रं स्थिता सा मारुतेःपुरः। एवमुक्तः सुरसया क्रुद्धो वानरपुंगवः
With her vast mouth opened wide, she stood before the son of the wind; thus addressed by Surasā, the foremost of monkeys grew angry.
अब्रवीत् कुरु वै वक्त्रं येन मां विषहिष्यसि। इत्युक्त्वा सुरसां क्रुद्धो दशयोजनमायताम्
He said, 'Make your mouth such that you can contain me!' So saying to Surasā in anger, he became ten yojanas long.
दशयोजनविस्तारो हनूमानभवत् तदा। तं दृष्ट्वा मेघसंकाशं दशयोजनमायतम्। चकार सुरसाप्यास्यं विंशद् योजनमायतम्
Then Hanuman became ten yojanas wide; seeing him, cloud-like and ten yojanas long, Surasā made her mouth twenty yojanas wide.
हनूमांस्तु ततः क्रुद्धस्त्रिंशद् योजनमायतः। चकार सुरसा वक्त्रं चत्वारिंशत् तथोच्छ्रितम्
Then Hanuman, enraged, became thirty yojanas long; Surasā made her mouth forty yojanas wide in response.
बभूव हनुमान् वीरः पञ्चाशद् योजनोच्छ्रितः। चकार सुरसा वक्त्रं षष्टिं योजनमुच्छ्रितम्
The heroic Hanuman became fifty yojanas tall, and Surasa made her mouth sixty yojanas wide.
तदैव हनुमान् वीरः सप्ततिं योजनोच्छ्रितः। चकार सुरसा वक्त्रमशीतिं योजनोच्छ्रितम्
Then at once, the valiant Hanuman grew to seventy yojanas in height, and Surasa widened her mouth to eighty yojanas.
हनूमाननलप्रख्यो नवतिं योजनोच्छ्रितः। चकार सुरसा वक्त्रं शतयोजनमायतम्
Hanuman, blazing like fire, became ninety yojanas tall, and Surasa stretched her mouth to a length of one hundred yojanas.
तद् दृष्ट्वा व्यादितं त्वास्यं वायुपुत्रः स बुद्धिमान्। दीर्घजिह्वं सुरसया सुभीमं नरकोपमम्
Seeing that gaping mouth, long-tongued, terrifying as hell, and dreadful as opened by Surasa, the wise son of the wind reflected.
स संक्षिप्यात्मनः कायं जीमूत इव मारुतिः। तस्मिन् मुहूर्ते हनुमान् बभूवाङ्गुष्ठमात्रकः
Then Hanuman, the son of the wind, contracted his body like a rain cloud, and in that instant became the size of a thumb.
सोऽभिपद्याथ तद्वक्त्रं निष्पत्य च महाबलः। अन्तरिक्षे स्थितः श्रीमानिदं वचनमब्रवीत्
Approaching and entering that mouth, the mighty and illustrious Hanuman emerged and, standing in the sky, spoke these words:
प्रविष्टोऽस्मि हि ते वक्त्रं दाक्षायणि नमोऽस्तुते। गमिष्ये यत्र वैदेही सत्यश्चासीद् वरस्तव
"I have entered your mouth, O daughter of Daksha; my salutations to you! Now I will go where Vaidehī is, for your boon remains true."
तं दृष्ट्वा वदनान्मुक्तं चन्द्रं राहुमुखादिव। अब्रवीत् सुरसा देवी स्वेन रूपेण वानरम्
Seeing him released from her mouth like the moon from Rahu's jaws, the goddess Surasa addressed the monkey in her own form:
अर्थसिद्ध्यै हरिश्रेष्ठ गच्छ सौम्य यथासुखम्। समानय च वैदेहीं राघवेण महात्मना
"Go, O best of monkeys, gentle one, and accomplish your purpose as you wish. Bring Vaidehī to the great-souled Rāghava."
