With great speed, he crossed the waves of the vast ocean, which rose like Mount Meru and Mandara, as if counting them.
At that time, the water, resounding with his force and filled with clouds, shone in the sky like autumn clouds spread out.
There could be seen, exposed, sharks, crocodiles, fish, and turtles, as if their bodies were being stripped of their coverings.
Then, seeing him advancing, the serpents dwelling in the ocean thought that tiger among monkeys to be Garuda in the sky.
The shadow of the lion-like monkey, in his swift movement, became beautiful—ten yojanas wide and thirty yojanas long.
His shadow, following the son of the wind, shone upon the salty waters like a line of white, dense clouds.
That great and radiant monkey, of immense body, shone on the path of the wind, unsupported, like a winged mountain.
The powerful monkey-elephant sped along, and by the path he took, the ocean seemed suddenly to be made into a trough.
As he moved through flocks of birds in his descent, Hanuman, like the king of birds, swept away masses of clouds as the wind would.
Great clouds, white, red, blue, and madder-colored, shone as they were drawn along by the monkey.
Entering and emerging again and again from masses of clouds, he appeared both hidden and revealed, like the moon.
Seeing that swift monkey leaping, the gods, gandharvas, and charanas showered flowers there.
The sun did not scorch the lord of monkeys as he leapt, and the wind served him then, for the accomplishment of Rama's purpose.
The sages praised him as he flew through the sky, and the gods and gandharvas sang, extolling the forest-dweller.
Nagas, yakshas, and various rakshasas all praised the best of monkeys, seeing him suddenly free from fatigue.
As Hanuman, the tiger among monkeys, was leaping, the ocean, wishing to honor the Ikshvaku line, began to reflect.
If I do not assist Hanuman, the lord of monkeys, then I will be subject to all reproach from those who speak.
I was increased by Sagara, lord of the Ikshvakus, and this one is a counselor of the Ikshvakus; therefore, he does not deserve to be hindered by me.
Thus I must act so that the monkey may rest, and having rested upon me, he will happily cross the remainder.
Having thus resolved wisely, she spoke to Mainaka, the best of mountains, hidden beneath the ocean's waters, whose navel is of gold.
Here, by the great-souled king of the gods, you have been stationed as a barrier for the hosts of Asuras dwelling in the netherworld.
You, whose strength is known among them, stand blocking the door of the immeasurable netherworld, lest they rise again.
Your power, O mountain, extends in all directions—across, above, and below; therefore, I urge you, best of mountains, arise.
That heroic Hanuman, tiger among monkeys, leaping through the sky for Rama's purpose and mighty in deed, is now approaching you.
It is my duty to assist him, who upholds the Ikshvaku line; the Ikshvakus are to be revered by me, and they are supremely worthy of your reverence as well.
Render your help to us, so that our task is not hindered; for a duty left undone stirs the anger of the virtuous.
Rise up from the water and let this monkey stand upon you; he is our guest and worthy of honor, foremost among those who leap.
O Mainaka, with your great golden peaks, served by gods and Gandharvas, let Hanuman rest upon you, and then he will continue his journey.
Considering the compassion of Kakutstha and Sita's exile, and the toil of the monkey chief, you ought to rise up.
Hearing this, Mainaka, golden-peaked, swiftly rose from the salty waters, covered with great trees and vines.
