दुष्करं निष्प्रतिद्वन्द्वं चिकीर्षन् कर्म वानरः। समुदग्रशिरोग्रीवो गवां पतिरिवाबभौ
Desiring to accomplish a deed difficult and without equal, the monkey appeared, with his raised head and neck, like the lord of cattle.
अथ वैदूर्यवर्णेषु शाद्वलेषु महाबलः। धीरः सलिलकल्पेषु विचचार यथासुखम्
Then the mighty and steadfast one wandered at ease among the green meadows, shining like cat’s-eye gems, and places resembling water.
द्विजान् वित्रासयन् धीमानुरसा पादपान् हरन्। मृगांश्च सुबहून् निघ्नन् प्रवृद्ध इव केसरी
Disturbing the birds, breaking trees with his chest, and striking down many animals, the wise one moved like a grown lion.
नीललोहितमाञ्जिष्ठपद्मवर्णैः सितासितैः। स्वभावसिद्धैर्विमलैर्धातुभिः समलंकृतम्
Adorned with pure minerals of blue, red, madder, and lotus hues, both white and black, naturally formed and spotless.
कामरूपिभिराविष्टमभीक्ष्णं सपरिच्छदैः। यक्षकिंनरगन्धर्वैर्देवकल्पैः सपन्नगैः
Inhabited constantly by shape-shifters with their retinues—Yakṣas, Kinnaras, Gandharvas, godlike beings, and serpents.
स तस्य गिरिवर्यस्य तले नागवरायुते। तिष्ठन् कपिवरस्तत्र ह्रदे नाग इवाबभौ
There, at the base of that foremost mountain, surrounded by noble serpents, the best of monkeys stood, resembling a serpent in a pool.
स सूर्याय महेन्द्राय पवनाय स्वयम्भुवे। भूतेभ्यश्चाञ्जलिं कृत्वा चकार गमने मतिम्
He offered reverent salutation with joined palms to the Sun, Indra, the Wind, the Self-born, and the elements, and set his mind on departure.
अञ्जलिं प्राङ्मुखं कुर्वन् पवनायात्मयोनये। ततो हि ववृधे गन्तुं दक्षिणो दक्षिणां दिशम्
Facing east, joining his hands to the Wind and the Self-born, he then grew ready to go southward, intent on the southern direction.
प्लवगप्रवरैर्दृष्टः प्लवने कृतनिश्चयः। ववृधे रामवृद्ध्यर्थं समुद्र इव पर्वसु
Seen by the foremost monkeys, resolved on leaping, he grew in size for Rāma’s purpose, like the ocean at the time of the tide.
निष्प्रमाणशरीरः सँल्लिलङ्घयिषुरर्णवम्। बाहुभ्यां पीडयामास चरणाभ्यां च पर्वतम्
His body immeasurable, wishing to cross the ocean in a single leap, he pressed down on the mountain with his arms and feet.
स चचालाचलश्चाशु मुहूर्तं कपिपीडितः। तरूणां पुष्पिताग्राणां सर्वं पुष्पमशातयत्
That mountain, pressed by the monkey, shook quickly for a moment, and all the blossoming treetops shed their flowers.
तेन पादपमुक्तेन पुष्पौघेण सुगन्धिना। सर्वतः संवृतः शैलो बभौ पुष्पमयो यथा
Covered on all sides by the fragrant shower of flowers released from the trees, the mountain shone as if made entirely of blossoms.
तेन चोत्तमवीर्येण पीड्यमानः स पर्वतः। सलिलं सम्प्रसुस्राव मदमत्त इव द्विपः
Pressed by that one of supreme strength, the mountain poured forth water, like a rutting elephant.
पीड्यमानस्तु बलिना महेन्द्रस्तेन पर्वतः। रीतीर्निर्वर्तयामास काञ्चनाञ्जनराजतीः
Pressed by the powerful monkey, that Mahendra mountain brought forth streams of gold, collyrium, and silver.
मुमोच च शिलाः शैलो विशालाः समनःशिलाः। मध्यमेनार्चिषा जुष्टो धूमराजीरिवानलः
The mountain released great, even boulders, and, adorned with a central blaze, looked like a fire with lines of smoke.
हरिणा पीड्यमानेन पीड्यमानानि सर्वतः। गुहाविष्टानि सत्त्वानि विनेदुर्विकृतैः स्वरैः
Pressed by the monkey, all the creatures hidden in the caves cried out with strange voices.
स महान् सत्त्वसन्नादः शैलपीडानिमित्तजः। पृथिवीं पूरयामास दिशश्चोपवनानि च
That great tumult of beings, caused by the mountain’s pressure, filled the earth, the directions, and the groves.
शिरोभिः पृथुभिर्नागा व्यक्तस्वस्तिकलक्षणैः। वमन्तः पावकं घोरं ददंशुर्दशनैः शिलाः
The broad-headed serpents, clearly marked with the sign of the svastika, spewed forth fierce fire and bit rocks with their fangs.
तास्तदा सविषैर्दष्टाः कुपितैस्तैर्महाशिलाः। जज्वलुः पावकोद्दीप्ता बिभिदुश्च सहस्रधा
Those great rocks, bitten by those enraged serpents filled with poison, blazed with fire and shattered into thousands of pieces.
यानि त्वौषधजालानि तस्मिञ्जातानि पर्वते। विषघ्नान्यपि नागानां न शेकुः शमितुं विषम्
Even the clusters of medicinal herbs that grew on that mountain, though potent against poison, could not subdue the venom of the serpents.
भिद्यतेऽयं गिरिर्भूतैरिति मत्वा तपस्विनः। त्रस्ता विद्याधरास्तस्मादुत्पेतुः स्त्रीगणैः सह
Thinking, 'This mountain is being broken by supernatural beings,' the ascetics, frightened, fled along with groups of women.
पानभूमिगतं हित्वा हैममासवभाजनम्। पात्राणि च महार्हाणि करकांश्च हिरण्मयान्
Leaving behind golden vessels of liquor on the drinking grounds, as well as precious cups and golden goblets,
लेह्यानुच्चावचान् भक्ष्यान् मांसानि विविधानि च। आर्षभाणि च चर्माणि खड्गांश्च कनकत्सरून्
They abandoned various sweets and foods, diverse meats, bull hides, and swords with golden hilts.
कृतकण्ठगुणाः क्षीबा रक्तमाल्यानुलेपनाः। रक्ताक्षाः पुष्कराक्षाश्च गगनं प्रतिपेदिरे
Adorned with crafted necklaces, intoxicated, smeared with red garlands and ointments, with red eyes and lotus-like eyes, they ascended into the sky.
हारनूपुरकेयूरपारिहार्यधराः स्त्रियः। विस्मिताः सस्मितास्तस्थुराकाशे रमणौः सह
The women, wearing necklaces, anklets, bracelets, and ornaments, stood amazed and smiling in the sky with their lovers.
दर्शयन्तो महाविद्यां विद्याधरमहर्षयः। सहितास्तस्थुराकाशे वीक्षांचक्रुश्च पर्वतम्
The great sages among the Vidyādharas, displaying their mighty powers, stood together in the sky and gazed at the mountain.
शुश्रुवुश्च तदा शब्दमृषीणां भावितात्मनाम्। चारणानां च सिद्धानां स्थितानां विमलेऽम्बरे
Then they heard the voices of the sages of purified mind, as well as the Cāraṇas and Siddhas, who stood in the clear sky.
एष पर्वतसंकाशो हनुमान् मारुतात्मजः। तितीर्षति महावेगः समुद्रं वरुणालयम्
This Hanuman, son of the wind, resembling a mountain, with tremendous speed, seeks to cross the ocean, the abode of Varuṇa.
रामार्थं वानरार्थं च चिकीर्षन् कर्म दुष्करम्। समुद्रस्य परं पारं दुष्प्रापं प्राप्तुमिच्छति
Desiring to accomplish the difficult task for the sake of Rama and the monkeys, he wishes to reach the far shore of the ocean, which is hard to attain.
इति विद्याधरा वाचः श्रुत्वा तेषां तपस्विनाम्। तमप्रमेयं ददृशुः पर्वते वानरर्षभम्
Hearing these words of the Vidyādharas and ascetics, they saw that immeasurable monkey-chief on the mountain.
